While researching my new
novel, SLIVERS OF GLASS, I spent a Saturday walking around old Hollywood,
keeping 1955 in mind.
The old hotels are no longer
open to the public-many converted to apartments or condominiums. Yet the lovely
structures of the building were amazing. Walking around the lake A Mc Arthur
Park and seeing the old stores fronts, it wasn’t hard to imagine men in snap
brim hats, and fedoras, and ladies in hats, gloves and heels strolling along
the sidewalks arm in arm, or rushing to meet the bus or red car, and children
playing around the lake.
Since I’m not a native of
So. California, I’d never had the privilege of experiencing Bullocks Wilshire.
It’s closed to the public (now Southwestern Law school) I had an opportunity that
day to walk through the ground floor of the build. The craftsmanship of wood inlay,
art deco lighting and statues immediately put me in a state of nostalgia for
old Hollywood and its lingering mayhem and style.
