Today's guest is not new to us. EA West has shared treasures and thoughts with us before but it is always a pleasure to welcome back a previous guest with a sneak peek into a new release

One man’s honor is another man’s shame. 

Meghan Carpenter loves God, her yarn business, and her twin brother Ryan — a former marine who currently lives with her. When she agrees to let his wounded buddy live with them on her small Indiana alpaca farm, she expects an American marine. What she gets is a former Afghan interpreter who’s painfully shy around women.

Scarred from the war, both physically and emotionally, Basir Hamidi is grateful for a place to live. But his attraction to Meghan is a problem. With his honor destroyed by events in his homeland, and nothing to offer her but his broken, scarred self, he vows to avoid her and protect her reputation. Yet he is drawn to her with a strength that can only be God's leading. For a man who has lost everything, letting go of the past is a difficult process. When he must also redeem his honor, his only chance of success is to rely on God.

Excerpt:

The oven timer dinged, and Meghan grabbed a hot pad. Golden-brown cookies filled the air with the delicious scents of vanilla and chocolate. She set the tray on the granite counter, shut off the oven, and then turned to the task of transferring chocolate chip cookies to the cooling rack.

As she set the baking sheet in the sink, the front door opened. Meghan’s heart jumped, and she hurried from the kitchen, eager to see which of Ryan’s friends would be living in her house. She stepped into the hall and spotted her brother and a swarthy-skinned, black-haired man wearing huge dark sunglasses. Each of them carried a black suitcase.

Ryan grinned as his friend closed the door. “Hey, Meghan, this is my buddy Basir Hamidi. Basir, meet my sister, Meghan.”

The black-haired man removed his sunglasses to reveal a pair of wire-rimmed glasses and scar tissue around his tawny-brown eyes. “Thank you for letting me stay in your home.”

Meghan swallowed her surprise at his heavy accent and pushed aside her sorrow that he had endured something terrible to cause the scars. Regardless of what he had been through, the only thing that should matter to her was helping him to feel comfortable in her home. She offered a warm smile and clasped her hands at her waist. “I’m glad I had an empty guestroom for you. I’ll let Ryan give you the grand tour of the place while I put the finishing touches on lunch, but remember that this is your home, too, for however long you need it.”

“Thank you.” He inclined his head, his right hand over his heart. Then, he lowered his hand and glanced at Ryan.

Her brother slung an arm around Basir’s shoulders and guided him to the stairs. “Your room’s up here.”

Meghan returned to the kitchen and struggled to wrap her mind around her new houseguest. She’d expected an American marine, but her brother had brought home an Afghan man. Had Basir somehow become a marine? Had he been part of the Afghan army? Questions flowed in a steady stream as she chopped hardboiled eggs for the chef’s salads she’d planned.

Good Morning Friends,

Last month my friend and fellow Pelican Book Group author, EA West shared something she treasures with us. Today she'll share thoughts about the story behind the story of her brand new YA Christian Fiction Novel, Crash Course.

Take it away EA!

My latest young adult novel, Crash Course, involves freestyle motocross and a girl who loves to ride dirt bikes. The funny part is that I’ve never ridden a dirt bike in my life and I don’t personally know anyone who does. My hobbies include reading, knitting, and crochet. So, how did someone like me end up writing this book? Simple. I love watching freestyle motocross on TV.

Of course, watching a few competitions isn’t nearly enough to write a book. I did research in addition to my weekends watching the Dew Tour, the X Games, and a few supercross races. I spent a lot of time reading articles and blog posts on freestyle motocross and dirt bikes in general. Forum posts enabled me to create realistic dialogue for my characters. YouTube became my new best friend. It’s amazing how much you can learn by watching videos that dissect each trick and show the techniques to be a successful motocross rider.

Here’s a fun fact for you. The character Brady Scott was inspired by the real freestyle motocross rider Travis Pastrana, who was fifteen years old the first time I saw him in a competition. The fact that someone so young could do such amazing things on a dirt bike stuck with me, and the idea for including a teenage freestyle motocross rider in a novel blossomed. Inspiration can come from anywhere, but the research is what brings realism to the story.

#TuesdayTreasures with E.A. West!

Happy Tuesday!

Back in 2014 E.A. West shared treasures and the spotlight with us so it is with great pleasure I bring her back for another visit.

When Pam asked me to write about something I treasure, my thoughts immediately went to my youngest dog. I adopted Cody in July of 2014 when he was about eight weeks old. He came from a backyard “oops” litter, and I was assured he was the sweetest puppy of the bunch.

From the moment I met him, I knew he was different. This large, mixed breed pup seemed so confused by everything. He acted like a much younger puppy and was more insecure than he should have been when confronted with anything new. Cody spent most of his first three days at my house hiding behind or under a chair in the living room. Then he came out and started getting to know the other animals and people in the family.

He gained more confidence as he got older, but he continued to get confused easily. His sweet

personality shone through brightly, and he craved touch. It didn’t matter whether he was being petted, cuddled, or just leaning against someone, he constantly wanted physical contact. Mentally, he continued developing slowly. I joked that he was developmentally delayed...until he couldn’t find his way out from under a blanket, even if it was only over his head. I would throw a ball, but he didn’t understand that he was supposed to chase it. That’s when I realized he isn’t developmentally delayed. He has a low IQ.

Fast forward to today. Cody has the maturity level of a six to nine-month-old puppy most of the time and still gets confused, but I couldn’t ask for a sweeter, more intuitive dog. He picks up on the slightest change in my mood and does his best to make me feel better. He’s figured out blankets are fun to play with and no longer gets stuck under them. Fetch is beyond him, but now he’ll chase the ball, touch it with his nose, and stare at me as if to say, “What am I supposed to do now?” He still craves hugs, cuddles, and any physical contact he can get.

It’s been challenging at times to raise this special needs pup. The amount of patience and creativity needed to train him and build his confidence have been astronomical. Yet I will always treasure what I’ve learned along the way and the dog who taught it to me. He’s the most loyal, well-behaved dog I’ve ever owned, and I believe a lot of it can be attributed to his special needs.

Awww...how sweet! Cody reminds me of my own German Shepherd - Cassie! Now tell us about your latest book, Crash Course.

Parties, dirt bikes, boyfriends… Angie has it all, but everything changes when her father kicks her out. Gone are the freedom and parties she thrived on. Now she has to survive a conservative mother with strict rules and a stepfather who may or may not like her. Then she meets freestyle motocross rider Brady Scott. He’s gorgeous, talented, and shows her respect at every turn. There’s only one problem — his opinions of life are opposite hers. The more time she spends with him, however, the more she’s drawn to him.

As Angie struggles to find her place in two conflicting worlds, she gets a crash course in life lessons and has to make a difficult decision — give up the partying life to hang out with Brady and his youth group friends or continue down a dangerous path that could destroy her.

#TuesdayTreasure: Guest Post by E.A West @eawest

Good Morning Friends!

Although this is not part of the Rocking Summer Romance blog hop, I am so pleased to bring you a guest post by my friend and fellow Pelican Book Group author, EA West!

Like Jezebel Smith, the main character in my new YA novel DIFFERENT, I was an undiagnosed autistic child. I didn’t receive my diagnosis until I was an adult, so I spent a lot of time wondering why I never fit in and why I always felt so different from everyone else. Those feelings along with the impaired social skills that go with autism made it difficult for me to make friends... with people.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved animals. I grew up with all kinds of pets, from dogs and cats to guinea pigs and mice. While I struggled to connect with others my age, I could always count on my furry friends to love me unconditionally. They understood me, and I understood them. If I had a bad day, they made me smile. When I had exciting news I longed to share with someone, my animal friends were more than happy to listen.

Although I had a few human friends, the animals held a special place in my heart. I didn’t have to pretend with them. I could be as weird as I wanted or needed to be, and they never judged me. Even now, one of my best friends is my dog Paisley. She’s almost always by my side. If I need a hug, she’s more than willing to give it. And she’s always ready for playtime, which improves even the worst days.

Animals make great companions for anyone, but for those of us who are different for one reason or another, they can be some of the best friends we’ll ever have.

Anything can happen when the rules change.

Jezebel Smith is different. She can’t talk, she doesn’t look like anyone in her family, and no matter what she does it’s always the wrong thing. As they approached the house, a man stepped out of the truck, and a shaggy black and white dog followed him. The dog immediately ran toward Peter and Jezebel. It slid to a stop in front of her and gave her a thorough sniffing. She smiled and knelt to rub the dog’s head as Peter chuckled.

“I think he likes you.”

Jezebel nodded and continued to pet the dog, who licked her chin and wagged his tail. Shoving the dog’s snout away from her face, she noticed the man join them with a smile.

“Sparky, be a good boy. No licking her face.”

The dog plopped his rear end on the ground and sat panting in Jezebel’s face. She leaned away from his smelly breath and smoothed his soft fur as she studied the man before them. He had dark hair like her and wore jeans and a light blue shirt. A quick glance revealed he had green eyes, and then she focused on the dog again.

“Roger, I’d like you to meet Jezebel,” Peter said.

“Hi. I’m glad to meet you,” he said. Jezebel stood and moved closer to Peter as Roger continued. “Sparky’s already introduced himself, and I can tell he likes you. He’s a border collie, by the way, so don’t be surprised if he starts trying to herd you.”

“Let’s go on up to the house,” Peter said, and they moved in that direction.

Sparky stayed by Jezebel’s side, and she was glad for his company. She preferred animals to people because they were less confusing, and she found them comforting.

Kayla’s gaze drifted to the door as an older woman hurried in with a piece of cardboard in her hand. The woman looked over and held up the sign with a questioning look—Shaw Restoration.

Relief washed over Kayla as she returned the woman’s smile and nodded. “Our ride’s here.”

She led the way over to the woman. “Hi, I’m Kayla Shaw, and this is Angie Martin and Paul Reed. We’re the group from Shaw Restoration.”

“I am Maria Santiago Uribe de Ramírez, wife of Pastor Carlos Ramírez Ochoa. Please forgive me for being late,” the woman said in heavily accented English. “The bus did not want to start, and Mateo Luis had to fix it before we could come.”

“I understand,” Kayla assured her.

“My husband sends his apologies for not being here, but he was called away by an emergency.” Maria lifted a hand toward the exit. “Come. Mateo is waiting to take us to the mission.”

As soon as Kayla saw the rusty, ancient bus with the mission name scrawled in faded blue paint across the side, she completely understood why Maria had been late. The vehicle looked as if it would take a miracle to get it to run, and Kayla made a mental note to contact the missions committee of the church she attended with her father. Perhaps they could raise enough to fix up the bus or possibly buy a newer one. The mission needed reliable transportation, and their current bus appeared to be far from it.

A swarthy-skinned man stepped out of the open door of the vehicle, and Kayla’s heart leapt into her throat. His dark, brooding eyes scanned the group, his stance wary as he took them in. A scar down the left side of his face made him look even more menacing than the heavy, dark stubble shadowing his face.

Maria stepped up beside him with a warm smile. “This is Mateo Luis. He works for the mission, so you will likely see him often. Mateo, this is Kayla, Angie, and Paul.”

Kayla struggled to find her voice, certain it was her responsibility as team leader to respond. “It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

He nodded, his gaze drifting over her. “If you will move to the back of the bus, we can load your luggage.”

As they followed him, Kayla noticed a slight limp in his walk. She felt a small twinge of guilt for judging him by his appearance alone. Since he worked for the mission, he was probably a very nice guy, even if he did look as scary as the rebels she’d seen in news reports. Perhaps his limp had been caused by the violence that had gripped Colombia for several decades. That could explain his wariness and the scar on his face as well.

Still, a little wariness of her own until she knew him better wouldn’t be amiss.

What started out as a bit of research for a sociology paper quickly turns into much more than Cindy ever expected. But can she survive Danny’s PTSD long enough to form a relationship with him? Cindy Waymire, a college senior in search for a topic for an upcoming sociology paper, finds more than a topic when she meets Army veteran and college freshman Danny Flynn outside the student union. An undeniable attraction to this troubled veteran leads her on a difficult and wind-ing path that brings her to a crossroads — get into a relationship with a man who has serious mental health problems or turn her back on one of the best men she’s ever met. Can Cindy set her fears aside and follow her heart, or will the ghosts haunting Danny’s mind end their relationship before it begins?


Excerpt:

A dark-haired guy with an athletic build, not more than an inch or two taller than her height of five foot nine, stood scanning the area as though he was lost. Clean-shaven, with just a hint of a five o’clock shadow along his jaw, he wore a T-shirt and jeans, both fitting just tight enough to hint at lean muscles. Cindy considered taking a candid photo and sending it to her girlfriends, but her cell phone was in her purse and digging it out would be too obvious. Maybe she could find another way to share this cutie with them.

His actions reminded her of her own during her first semester there. She’d had to ask someone where to find buildings so many times. Without those sympathetic upperclassmen, she would have been perpetually lost. If he was a new student, that made her the sympathetic upperclassman. She stopped near him and smiled.
“Hi, can I help you find someplace?”

He didn’t seem to hear her. She moved closer, thinking he might not realize she was talking to him. “Excuse me.”

He twisted and grabbed her wrist with startling speed. She screamed as he spun her around, bringing her arm behind her and forcing her to the ground as he said something unintelligible, but undeniably commanding. As he put a knee on her back and pulled her other arm, she heard people running toward them and prayed they could help. The guy was strong and no amount of struggling did any good. He just tightened his grasp on her wrists and applied more pressure with his knee, making it difficult for her to draw in a breath.

“Danny, let her up!” a male voice said as the running steps stopped beside them.

“He’s a threat.”

He? Before Cindy could figure out what the guy was talking about, she felt some of his weight lift from her back.

“She’s a noncombatant, Sarge,” a third male voice said.

The grip on her wrists loosened. “What?”

“You’re in the States, man.”

“Crap!” He released her wrists, and his weight lifted from her completely.

Saturday Spotlight EA West & The Key to Charlotte

Good Morning Friends and what a glorious day it is!
A week for good news all around, I'm happy to say The Visionary received two more excellent reviews.... 5 Stars from author, Dana Pratola and 4 stars from RT Book Reviews! Dana's review can be read on Barnes & Noble - the RT review is in the Dec. issue of the magazine. Tomorrow I'm getting on the road to Tennessee after which I'll fly to Louisiana for a few weeks. Although I won't be online much this weekend, I'll be up and at it again bright and early Monday morning~and that's my life in a nutshell LOL!

Now without much further ado, please welcome to our Saturday Spotlight EA West & her newest release, The Key to Charlotte.

Author Bio: E.A. West, author of sweet and inspirational romance, is a lifelong lover of books and storytelling. In high school, she discovered the wonders of sharing her stories with others through writing. She picked up her pen in a creative writing class and hasn’t laid it down yet. Her love of writing encompasses not only the romance genre but also a variety fiction and non-fiction styles.
Born and raised in Indiana, she still resides there today with her family and a small zoo of pets that includes the typical dogs and cats, and the more unusual African water frogs and a ribbon snake. Her interests are as varied as her critters. She has been known to carry on conversations about everything from politics and current events to gardening and theology. When she’s not writing, you can usually find her working on her latest knitting or crochet project.

Charlotte Harris can't speak due to a quirk in her autistic brain, but that doesn't stop her from communicating with others. Unfortunately, it prevents her from achieving two of her dreams--to praise God through singing and to carry on a simple conversation with her own voice.

Zakaria Rush is the new Director of Children's Ministries at Charlotte's church, and he can't keep his thoughts off the partially mute blonde with a love for guitar music. Her innocence and love of the simple things in life intrigue him and make him long to give her what she wants more than anything: her voice.
