#SaturdaySpotlight is on LoRee Peery & Shelter in the Night ~ Worship through Verse Vol. 1

Good Morning and Welcome,

Today's guest has been a regular since I started this feature and I am SO please to bring her back! Thank you, LoRee for dropping by with your new book today. Tell us about it...

Thanks, Pam. Writing any kind of poetry was never on my creative agenda.

Rather than dealing with the pandemic lockdown in 2020, I dealt with months of shoulder pain. I had a reverse replacement in June of 2020. The surgeon also did repair on a broken acromion (the flat bone connected to the clavicle) that forms the top curve. I found out later the pins were just “floating.:” So that part of the operation hadn’t worked, and I needed surgery again three months later.

I often awoke in the wee hours around three a.m. with my Bible turned to the Psalms. Psalm 91:1 says He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."

He definitely proved to be my Shelter in the Night, thus the name for the first of four journals that I filled during those months.

Those months weren’t the first that I’ve called various waiting places over the years. The conclusion I’ve reached is that what touches my life is according to God’s time, and I’m not meant to ask why. For whatever reason, to build character, patience, or perseverance, that waiting period happened in 2020.
Due to the pain that woke me, I spent those wee hours of many sleepless nights reading my Bible and followed God’s Word by pouring out my frustration and praise through what I called LoRee’s modern-day psalms. Lamentations turned to praise, all with adoration for the Lord God who calls me His daughter, and I filled four journals.

Wow, LoRee, isn't it amazing how beauty comes from ashes? Tell us more please...

Yeah, God's purpose and plan never ceases to amaze me! Read on...

Blurb: Do you ever awaken in the middle of the night, beset by thought of the worries of the day? Do you ever awaken with the feeling that God wants you to pray for someone or some thing? Do you pray, flounder in your prayer or immediately fall back to sleep?

Through the verses of Shelter in the Night, volume 1 in the Worship through Verse devotionals, the author pours out sorrows and joys much like the Old Testament psalmists. Whether you need shelter or reassurance, this collection can bring peace, hope, and solace.

Excerpt

Psalm 127:3

Children are a heritage from the LORD,

offspring a reward from him.

The Master Healer

Where is my faith?

I’m shaking inside, Lord

Sick to my stomach

“All” I can do is pray

You’ve blessed me

With fourteen grandchildren

One was injured today

On the football field

You knew beforehand

He belongs to You

Be with my son and his wife

Be their comfort and strength

May we all turn to You

And receive calm and peace

You are the only Source

Of ease and healing

You’ve settled me down

Reach my family with Your Spirit.

#WednesdayWordswithFriends Welcomes LoRee Peery!

Good Morning Friends,

I returned home Sunday from Nacogdoches and back into my normal routine. Been steadily proofing, pruning and tweaking Kyleigh's Cowboy and I'm excited to get the final files uploaded this week. More on that later. Our guest today is no stranger to our blog, so please welcome LoRee Peery back as she shares with us some thoughts on heaven....

Heaven is My Home

Peas isn’t here—only the pod. Peas shelled out and went to God.
–written on a tombstone in England.

Have you ever been in situations where, “I don’t belong here” came to mind? After all, one of Christ’s promises is found in John 14:2 where He tells us He left earth to prepare a mansion for us in heaven.

Rejoice! The victory over life and death on earth was won. I look forward to my heavenly dwelling place, where I’ll sing and shout in my Lord’s presence. Just imagine a city with streets of gold (see Revelation 21), and rather than sun high in the sky, light spreads from the Son of God.

I can only imagine. There will be no more pain or sorrow in heaven. I’ll meet Old and New Testaments saints. There will be a reunion with loved ones. Possible surprises over some people I know who will be there. Heaven is where any earthly crowns we accumulate are for His glory. The image in my mind of heaven sets my focus on Jesus, rather than things of earth.

The opening lines of a hymn from childhood have run through my thoughts as I write. “I’m but a stranger here, heaven is my home.” In my Christmas novella, Christmas House, Pepper’s childhood home was a storage unit. Her family ignored holidays. As an adult, Pepper decided to decorate her first cottage home for Christmas year-round.

Imagine that. Christmas decorations in every room for twelve months. In the story, Pepper doesn’t know the real Christmas story until she’s introduced to Christians. The owner of miniature donkeys is a believer, as well as Foxx, the hero. Foxx invites Pepper to a church service where she hears the full gospel message.

Her spirit is awakened as understanding blooms. I’ve never been so bold as a novelist with the message of salvation. Before long, the real meaning of Christmas unfolds in Pepper’s heart. Her life blossoms while at the same time, Foxx is dealt a life-changing blow. But those chapters flow to the reader’s heart and reveal how Pepper and Foxx overcome. They, like us, look forward to lives in God’s hands.

My individual chapter on earth is backstory in God’s story of my life. He’s prepared for me an eternal home in heaven. God’s Word assures me that life here is but a breath. A vapor. A whisper on the wind. Heaven is my inheritance. Ephesians 1:4 assures me that God chose me before the creation of the world. Just imagine!

Change Your Mind
This land is not
My eternal home

A heart set on heaven
Is a heart set apart

My God is with me,
A spiritual connection

His Word transforms
My way of thinking

God is the only Truth―
Acceptable, good, perfect

I place my thoughts
On heavenly themes

My eternal home
Sets earth as backstory.

Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you (Psalm 73:25). I can’t conclude without the comfort found at the end of Psalm 23…and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. I know my eternal home is in heaven. Do you know beyond a doubt where yours will be?

Thank you, Pam, for allowing me to visit Words with Friends. May all of you enjoy fall and the coming holidays as you, too, look forward to heavenly homes.

Good Morning Friends and Welcome!

It's been a crazy, full week for me and the running won't stop until after Memorial Day, therefore I'm only going to give you a brief rundown before letting LoRee take over the blog today.

Sunday I went to my great-niece's birthday/graduation party, Monday went to my granddaughter's awards ceremony, Tuesday granddaughter's graduation ceremony. This morning I'm attending my grandson's awards ceremony. Tomorrow I'm going to the Annual Law Enforcement Memorial Service for Iowa PD to honor Terry then going to my great-niece's graduation that evening. Friday I get a day of rest. Saturday is Bayou Writer's group meeting and my granddaughter's graduation party then on Sunday or Monday I'm going to Sam Rayburn Lake for a few days, driving back on Thursday for grandson's birthday on Friday (27th) then back to the lake until Sunday (30th) after which I'll go to my daughter's house for a few days since they will be out of town.

Yeah...I'm exhausted just thinking about it, but don't worry, Saturday Spotlight will still go on and this week's guest is Barbara Britton so even if I'm crazy busy, y'all stop by and browse.

Now, onto our guest.... Take it away LoRee....

Worship through Verse

Most of us hear the word worship and think of singing during a church service. Not particularly so. We don’t need a location to seek the Lord. Worship happens anywhere that involves spirit and truth.

Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks (John 4:23 NIV).

“In spirit,” means submission of the human spirit, according to verse 24, “God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.” In order to worship the One True God, a person must have an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ, God’s Son. Jesus is the only way to the Father. Once we repent and acknowledge our need for a Savior, we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Thus, we are able to worship in spirit and in truth.

As His children, God is with us in the Spirit no matter what time of day or night we call on Him. By worshiping Him through reading the truth of His Word, the Bible, He works through me. I can’t write a thing that honors Him unless I admit I need His help.

No “me, me, me”
  But Jesus, Jesus, Jesus
    He’s worthy of all …

All my love
  All my energy
    All my worship.

My last visit here on a Wednesday, I talked about a journal of modern-day verse that I penned, “Worship through Verse.” I cherish the pictures of my volume on coffee tables I’ve seen where loved ones worship in their living rooms or at their kitchen tables, using those verses as a devotional to supplement worship.
In other words, we can worship anywhere and at any time, as long as we worship in the Spirit and in truth.

Psalm 95:5-6
The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land.
Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.

Country Worship

God’s breath on the breeze
Kisses my soul, my spirit

Dirt beneath my feet
Reminds me God made Adam

The heavenly sky above me
Is where Jesus will appear

The songs of earth and sky
Made by God’s holy breath

My soul soars in praise
What an awesome God is He

I thank God I’m a country girl
Where I’m free to sing out loud

Heart and breath on the breeze
Heart and voice free to worship.

Psalm 100:2 reads: Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.

#WednesdayWordswithFriends Welcomes LoRee Peery @LoreePeery

Good Morning!

My heart is so full this morning I might burst. I am so happy and grateful for my life and excited about the year to come. I know I'm getting ahead of myself because 2022 is a week away, but I can't help it. God is SO GOOD! He constantly amazes me. No, I can't recount a "big" miracle that happened this week or since I last shared with you here or in my newsletter. What I can say is this....

Because my Redeemer lives, I can face tomorrow.

The miracle is simply the joy of His Presence in my life - heart, mind, soul, quickening my mortal body. The miracle of every breath I take. The miracle of sunshine to warm my soul and rain to moisten the parched areas of my life. The miracle of family and friends (like YOU) and loved ones.

God is SO Good and as we celebrate His birth this weekend, let us vow to remember and celebrate Him every day, every moment of our lives.

Today's guest is not new but it has been a long while since she visited so please welcome my friend and fellow Pelican Book Group author, LoRee Peery back to our blog...Take it away LoRee!

Words Matter
Readers and writers live in a world of words. Words matter. The most important words are in the Bible, from God’s heart to our hearts and minds. Words can build up and words can tear down. Words help overcome fear by their truth. Encouraging words are precious.

Multiple words came to me from July 2020 through September 2021. I wrote just under 900 modern-day psalms. Most often, it seemed those words didn’t penetrate my brain, they just poured from pen onto paper. Since then, I have cherished and soaked them in.

Words make me think about my brain, which God made fearfully and wonderfully along with my body. Does our Creator see words written through brain matter? Such imagination is beyond me. As a child I learned about the telegraph and that Alexander Graham Bell gained a patent for the telephone in the early 1800s, enabling people to talk to one another from a distance. How can words travel through wire?

I also never “got” the essence of electricity. Words have told me there is electrical-like power in our bodies. On the job, my introduction to computers included Ram and Rom. They were mere words to me. The first computers were the size of a closet. Modern-day computer chips are small enough to wear in a wristwatch and many minuscule devices. Those scientific discoveries are mind-boggling.
Around 1990, again on the job, I was introduced to the word-wide web. Cyberspace is as far as outer, outer space to me when it comes to comprehension. But I love reading info at the click of a mouse. Recently, I could only access my country internet a handful of times in a six-week period. I relied on reading and writing for my word fix. And I admit how frustrating it was. But God worked it out and I’m up to speed now (pun intended).

Also recently, I had reason to be humbled and embarrassed over the misplacement of words. Those modern-day psalms I mentioned? They fill four journals. I decided to give the last one, Worship through Verse, as gifts to those I love. I had them printed and spiral bound. I used one of my nice winter pictures as a cover, and then wrapped up around 20 before I realized the mistakes. Every writer needs a proofreader before words go out in print. I could beat myself up, but why should I? The two typos, one omission, and another correction can be easily explained with a few words.

Words matter. With words, I express my hope for the Lord to shine upon each and every one of you, and that you glorify Him with the words you read, speak, and write. Pam, thank you for Words with Friends.

Jeremiah 31:3
The LORD appeared to us in the past, saying:
“I have loved you with an everlasting love;
I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.”

Never Ending Story

The story of Jesus
Is a never-ending story

His love surrounds us
As high as highest heaven

As deep as ocean waters
From the east to the west

His story never ends
He came before me

Love that defies comprehension
Is the wonderful truth

The world is in His hands
Yet, He encompasses me

Jesus is never ending
His love is never ending.

#SaturdaySpotlight is on LoRee Peery @LoReePeery & Future of My Heart

Good Morning and Welcome!

Today's guest is not new to our blog. LoRee has shared many treasures, thoughts, words and books with us over the years. Back in August, she shared book 1 in her "Hearts Across Time" series. Today we get a peek into book two!

Nolan Riley can’t believe his eyes when woman in historical dress lands on top of his lighting van while they’re filming a Western. She claims she’s from 1891. He knows he shouldn't believe her. He’s stayed away from women after a disastrous relationship, but something about the lost look in Phoebe’s eyes makes him feel protective, despite his distrust of women and Phoebe's unbelievable claim. Against his better judgment, he takes Phoebe home and gets her a job on the movie set.

As they explore their relationship, they discover that old wrongs need to be righted before they can move on. Phoebe’s fledgling faith demands she go back to 1891 Nebraska to ask forgiveness from her family and obligations she left behind. Nolan has to deal with his inability to trust a woman. Separated by time, both are uncertain of their lives, but they throw themselves upon God’s mercy.
But love transcends time. Is their love is strong enough to secure a future together?

Excerpt: Washington County, Nebraska, 1891

Phoebe’s hand brushed into something gooey, which caused her to gag. She recoiled at the same time a chicken swooped off the roosting rod to the floor. The hen disappeared through the small door so fast Mandy stumbled to the side, enabling her to reach farther.

The touch of a smooth, foreign surface at last met her fingertips. She smiled in relief, and straightened, the prize held high.

“Don’t.” Mandy stepped near, holding out her hand. “Give me the cell phone, Phoebe.”

She tucked the phone at her side. “You got what you wanted. Now leave me alone.”

“Let’s not tell your mother what you’ve been doing in the coop. She’ll never understand. All she wants is for us to help pare apples and prepare a pie crust for our supper. What will I tell her if you disappear forever?”

“Simply tell Mother I’ve gone away to make a life of my own, a place God has planned for me. While I was visiting in Chicago, you settled in here on the ranch. Upon returning, I decided there’s not room for both of us. I don’t feel as though I belong any longer.” Mother would express bewilderment, but Phoebe couldn’t think about that now.

Mandy played with a stray lock of hair then tucked it under the straw hat that once belonged to Phoebe. “It’s far from my station to say this, but you are acting like a child.”

The usurper reached out her hand, but Phoebe scurried by to leave the building. She sucked in fresh air and fought to open the coop pen without letting loose the phone. Mandy had called her a child. Her parents’ circle may consider her the pampered only daughter of a prominent rancher, but would they pity her now that her very position had been replaced by the foreman’s bride from the future?

Phoebe’s fingers shook. The whole scenario frustrated her to the point of screaming. She hated the tears that threatened. She yanked on the gate.

Mandy brushed by Phoebe and opened it in one smooth swoop without fumbling over a simple gate latch.

Steaming now, Phoebe rushed away.

Mandy re-hooked the wire gate behind them, and then clutched Phoebe’s arm. Stop. Phoebe, please. I beg you. Give me the phone. You don’t know how dangerous it is.”

Phoebe paused. How could the cell phone be dangerous? Ready or not, she needed to push forward. Mandy had done that very thing by choosing to live in an earlier century. Phoebe turned. “No. I have to know how this thing works.”

Mandy shuffled her foot through the dirt. As good a person as the family considered her, Phoebe would never view Mandy as a sister-in-law, adopted or not.

“Fine. I’ll press every button on that thing, myself. You’ve taken my place in my own family. You’ve taken away the only man I love. Now it’s my turn to take something from you. I’m going back to your world, to make a new life for myself. And not you, nor Mother, nor Papa, or even Gavin, will ever be able to stop me.”

A pained expression clouded Mandy‘s face. She stepped forward, lifted off the straw hat, and shook her hair. “I’d be glad to help by listening. Can’t you wait?”

“I’m done waiting. Done listening to others telling me what to do.” Phoebe blew a gust of air and groaned inside. Her whole future was in question. She once knew where she was going, no matter if those in Mama and Papa’s social circle considered her encroaching the status of an old maid. She’d been waiting for a dream that went poof at Mandy’s arrival on the ranch.

For some reason beyond her, it no longer mattered that she’d lost Gavin to Mandy. “After I saw what city life was like in Chicago, I decided I want to visit the future of your time. Maybe become an actress.”

Mandy’s mouth opened, but she didn’t speak.

A twinge of remorse stuck Phoebe’s heart at the hurt and uncertainty her actions painted on Mandy’s face.

Had she not hood-winked Gavin into falling in love with her, had they met under different circumstances, Mandy might have been Phoebe’s friend. Curiosity increased as to where Mandy came from. Phoebe longed to discover the described amenities and fast-paced way of life in the future. She lowered her gaze and frowned at the edges of the cell phone. What made it work? So small, yet powerful enough to send Mandy back in time. Could it have the power to sail herself through to a forward time? She’d never considered herself so alone. A tremor scratched down her spine.

Mandy squeezed Phoebe’s arm, tried to grab the phone. “Stop all that fiddling with the buttons.”

Phoebe snapped to attention and tucked the phone close to her chest. “Why? I only want to get away and see the world. Your world.”

“You’re taking a chance. There’s no guarantee you’d land in my world.”

Mandy’s mouth frowned. She let loose of her grasp on Phoebe. “Be careful what you wish for.”

“What’s wrong with wanting a different life, away from here, where I can live for myself? There’s mothing on the ranch for me now that you’re so comfortable here.” That sounded so selfish, so unlike serving others the way Jesus did while on earth.

She only gained that particular knowledge because Gavin gave her a New Testament. A little modern book that Mandy originally brought with her.

Mandy stepped closer, lunged for the phone.

Phoebe swung away, turning her back. “I wish to fly to Mandy’s world in the twenty-first century.” She squeezed the celluloid rectangle to her bosom, and trilled her fingers. Spiraling waves encompassed her. Was she drowning? No. She breathed. Rather than drop, she rose softly, floating. Flying. Weightless and rising.

Dizzy, the world slid to black.

Washington County, the present

Nolan took advantage of the break in shooting to stow his light meter in the van. He stretched through the open back door to tuck it in the case where it belonged, all nice and tidy until he needed the tool again. His belly growled. He chuckled over his tendency to get so involved in the way light affected a shot that he sometimes forgot to eat.

Bam.

The van shook.

What was that?

He raised his eyes to see no indentation from the inside, but something big had struck the roof.

What in the world? It couldn’t be a limb because the van was parked in the open away from trees.

He backed out, took hold of the frame, and stepped onto the van floor above the bumper. A dark-haired woman swathed by undulating green skirts sprawled on the roof.

His jaw dropped. How’d a woman get on the van roof?

His mouth agape, he looked up. Nothing in the sky but gathering gray clouds.

He swallowed, cleared his throat, and jerked out of his momentary shock. “You hurt?”

The woman shrugged a shoulder, but didn’t answer or move her head.

What if she broke an arm or a leg? Or worse, had a head injury? He stretched out his arm. “Can you hear me?”

“Oh. Wh… where am I?”

The young woman’s words made no sense to Nolan whatsoever, as puzzled as he was over how she’d landed on the van roof.

The woman before him rolled over and propped herself on an arm. She blinked, and swayed to a sitting position.

His brain short-circuited. Beautiful.

She wasn’t wearing a speck of makeup, yet her exquisite face was so perfect that everything around them ceased to exist. They were the only two people in the world.

His heart unplugged for a beat. Or two.

He shook off his paralyzed state to extend a hand. “Where’d you come from?”

#WednesdayWordswithFriends welcomes LoRee Peery @LoreePeery with her Christmas book!

Good Morning!

Boy it's been cold and dreary these last several days here in SW Louisiana. Definitely Winter weather UGH. I am not fond of cold, wet, dreary at all but as the Bible says there is a season for every purpose under heaven so we must learn to, if not enjoy, appreciate every season.

Today's guest is not new to us. LoRee Peery has been a pretty regular guest for years so please welcome her back with her latest Christmas book, A Cup of Christmas Kindness.....

A Cup of Christmas Kindness…

We’ve heard it for months, what a year 2020 has been. I’m no exception in feeling that way, but rather than looking down on the past months, I count them as blessings. There is always good in the bad. I love the song “Turn Your eyes Upon Jesus” because it works! Rather than focus on the problem, if I focus on faith, the unexplainable peace of the Lord floods my soul.

My “rough” year was focused on my shoulder issues. A broken acromion bone and reverse joint replacement involved two surgeries and months of an immobilized right arm. That didn’t keep my left hand from learning how to write (scribble). I was downhearted because pain prevented me from zeroing in on my work of fiction. It kept stalling.

Toward the end of July during the wee hours that pain kept me awake, instead of picking up my Kindle I reached for my Bible. Old Testament promises, especially in the Psalms, comforted my hurts. Something miraculous happened along with the solace I received. I picked up pen and notebook. Nonfiction praise flowed from my heart through my fingertips onto the page.

Jeremiah 30:17 But I will restore you to health and heal your wounds,” declares the Lord.

Jehovah-rophe

You are the God Who Heals

Thank You for getting

Me through another day

I’ve been on auto pilot

Trying to make it without

Falling to pieces tears are close

But I haven’t given in

Six months I’ve lived

With a broken bone that won’t heal

I get done what You’d have me do

According to Your plan

Thank You, Lord, for getting

Me through another day.

Jehovah-rophe,

You are the God Who heals.

It was normal to think of why I was pouring out such words. I wrote a line or two about the pain or trouble that prevented sleep. Then before I knew it praise and songs filled my soul. I called them lamentations or psalms. As of this writing, I’ve penned around 250 (numbers have never been my thing).

Job 11:7-8 “Can you fathom the mysteries of God? Can you probe the limits of the Almighty? They are higher than the heavens above—what can you do? They are deeper than the depths below—what can you know?

God’s Always Got It

No matter what,

God’s always got it

Physical pain?

God’s always got it

Mental fatigue?

God’s always got it

Stress over sin?

God’s always got it

Lost souls of children,

God’s always got it

The country’s unrest,

God’s always got it

The tasks before me,

God’s always got it

Whatever I face,

God’s always got it.

All praise and glory belong to Jesus, my King, for whatever He does through me. I wish Pam and all readers here the blessed hope and peace that can only come from why we celebrate Christmas and Easter.

Thank you So Much, LoRee! We certainly wish you the best of luck and God's blessings with your new release and a VERY Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours.

Violet Steele returns to her parents' home in small-town Nebraska to pay off school loans. But her first social activity is the celebration of life for a woman she'd dreamt would someday be her mother-in-law.

Heath Banfield is haunted by memories of Violet leaving him in their youth. He ended up with a woman who never wanted motherhood, and he's become bitter and hard when it comes to love and trust. Now he's dealing with his mother's death. In her absence, he needs an after-school caregiver for his daughter. When Violet offers to tend for the eight-year-old, he's not sure he can handle her act of kindness.

Violet is still in love with Heath, and helping him through his grief and caring for his delightful daughter is a welcome opportunity. But Heath is wary, and she'll have to muster every ounce of kindness she has.

Will Violet's deliberate holiday deeds lead to romance, or will Heath's hurt deepen his bitterness?

#WednesdayWordswithFriends welcomes LoRee Peery @LoreePeery

Good Morning Friends and Welcome to the first Wednesday in August 2020!

Life's been a little crazy since I returned from Troy, AL. My dad had to have surgery and is recovering from a blister on his foot so I've been driving back and forth to his house since Friday. Everything is looking good and he's feeling better every day but your prayers are coveted and appreciated!

Our guest today is no stranger to our blog. She has shared treasures and thoughts with us, been in our spotlight and been a previous Wednesday Words with Friends guest, but before we turn the blog over to LoRee I'd like to announce July's winner of an Amazon gift card.....

Sarah Taylor!

Congratulations, Sarah....Enjoy your gift card and Thank You for supporting our guests.

Now, take it away LoRee.....

I’ve always been captivated by old barns. They catch my eye any time I’m driving through the country, the same as windmills. Rarely are they next to one another any longer. Years ago, my brother lived on an acreage that he cleaned up and flipped. The first time I drove on the place, I fell in love with the barn. I’d never been in one that could be entered on different levels. The door that faced the house opened into the loft where hay was stored. A trapdoor and ladder led to the lower level, entered from the corral, where the animals were kept.

Bingo, an old dream came to mind. One I had years before I started writing. In the dream, I walked up the stairs of an old farm house and opened a door. On the other side of the door was a farmstead of the late 1800s.

Now what did I know about that time in history other than the westerns I’d read and watched? I’d never read a time travel other than The Time Machine. Of course I’d seen the movie Back to the Future. I bought Diana Gabaldon’s tome, Outlander (and loved it except for the violence). But I was intrigued. So I started praying about a time travel story where the heroine falls through a barn trapdoor and wakes up to the cowboy of her dreams.  Since my brother’s acreage was in Washington County, Nebraska, that’s where I set the story. The heroine Amanda is an event planner who lives in Omaha.

I’m excited for readers to experience a take-away escape while reading my story, one of faith and hope. Time travel is a popular genre that crosses generations of readers. This year of 2020 has put us Americans, and the world, through troubled times. There’s nothing good on the news due to the virus and politics. Beta readers and early reviewers have mentioned Cowboy Just in Time is a different kind of story, thus entertaining.

Faith always plays into my stories because my belief in God is what my life is all about. Amanda is strong in her beliefs and attends a Bible-teaching church in twenty-first century Omaha. Gavin saw God through nature but had next to no Bible teaching. Trust is a big aspect of faith. The bottom line, how could their love be strong enough to span the ages? After all, Mandy simply disappeared into thin air a couple times. But nothing is impossible with God.

My challenge for this story came while writing the historical aspect. I really didn’t have trouble identifying with the time, probably because I grew up on an outdated homesteaded farm that didn’t have plumbing until the mid-1950s. Historical references should be accurate because readers are savvy, so I may have gone a little overboard on cowboy lingo. But I also needed to research telephones in the country, the first “talkies,” and Chicago of that day.

I hope this story connects with contemporary Christian women. Readers seek to find hope from a messy world, and time travel is a genre for the curious, no matter our age. Lovers of time travel, especially romantics from late teens to mature adults who like clean happily-ever-after stories, should have the satisfaction that God is not restricted by human ideas, or our views of time.

Blurb:

When event planner Amanda Totten falls through a barn trapdoor and finds herself in the arms of an 1890’s cowboy, she scrambles to find a way back to the future. She has a life and obligations—her fledgling business and her mother’s financial needs. But the less stressful lifestyle, and her deepening love for Gavin Medley, is calling to her heart and she is torn between past and future.

Has God given her a chance at love?

Gavin Medley has been working for years to regain his family homestead. As ranch foreman, he has nothing but a dream of a place and family of his own. But his love for Amanda is making him think that having his own ranch isn’t as important as having someone to love for the rest of his life.

Amanda returns to the future, and Gavin is shattered. He tries to go forward in time, but fails. Believing it's God’s will, Gavin resigns himself to living without the love of his life.

But love transcends time, and Amanda and Gavin need each other. Can Amanda return to her cowboy?

Thank you, Pam, for hosting me today.

You're very welcome, LoRee! It is a pleasure to have you back. I LOVE old barns too so your post really rang a bell with me as I'm sure it does with more of us here. Good luck and God's blessings with Cowboy Just in Time!

#WednesdayWordswithFriends welcomes LoRee Peery!

Good Morning!

Even though I may be hosting a guest each week, I try to say a few words about what's going on in my life at the time also. On Saturday, I mentioned I was at my son's house since TX had opened the LA borders. Well, our state is entering phase 1 of reopening but to tell you the truth, I'm not overly anxious to be around crowds just yet. I am looking forward to camping though (the State and National parks/campgrounds have been closed - which never made sense to me - they could have easily monitored them - but that's a whole other post LOL!)

ANYWAY, as our country begins to ease up on Covid19 restrictions, I pray you'll continue to be safe and take care of yourself and your loved ones!

Enough about that... Our guest today has visited often over the years but it has been a while so please give LoRee Peery a huge shout-out: WELCOME LoRee!

Often the question, “What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?” comes up during a Q and A interview.

My quirk changes with each story. Every single time, I overuse a phrase or specific word during the course of a writing project. What’s interesting is that it’s usually a different word or phrase than I’ve redundantly used before.

Writers have a list of what we call weasel words, often a form of the passive “to be.” Mine have been going to, just, instead, sure, such. In the case of Repurposed, the word was looked, which happens to be a verb.

I just sigh once I see what I’ve used over and over. In my recently finished Christmas novella, I discovered that I used “it” way too much, so I went through the story and plugged in the nouns the pronoun represented.

Uh oh. “It was” popped up in Repurposed. (Thank you, extra pair of eyes!) What was? Sigh. How passive is that?

I try to remember to pray, but often I jump right in where I left off the day before and realize later what those nuisance words are. Other eyes on my work are vital because different things jump out to different people. Still, I’ll find words in the galleys or a finished project that were overused. It’s easy to sit in my study chair and feel embarrassed. But writers need humility. We keep learning as we persevere.

Talia Ashby is a perfectionistic data analyst who, on occasion, sees her “fat” self when she looks in the mirror. As a svelte former obese girl, she reunites with her secret teen crush, now a pastor in the church she attends.

Cooper Valiant is dazzled upon meeting a high school friend he doesn’t immediately recognize due to her drastic weight loss. Since his sister had an eating disorder, he’d often felt empathy toward Talia as classmates teased and bullied her. In his pastorate position, he asks her to help girls in the youth group come to grips with body-image.

While working with the girls, Talia's recollections of youthful hurts stir up past insecurities. She must reassess her spiritual journey, and what bothers her in the present.

Added to the mix are her reawakened emotions toward the man who once came to her rescue. Will their joint journey include a personal relationship?

THANKS LoRee for sharing with us today. We certainly wish you the best of luck and God's blessings with your new book!

#SaturdaySpotlight: LoRee Peery @loreepeery & #TouchesOfTime

Good Morning Friends!

Well if you didn't get your taxes done yesterday and haven't filed an extension, you get a reprieve! This year the normal deadline of April 15th has been extended to Monday, April 18th due to some Federal holiday I've never even heard of. But hey, it's all good, right?

Fortunately I did mine this past week and got them in the mail yesterday so that monkey is off my back until next year.

Our guest, LoRee Peery is no stranger here. Fellow Pelican Book Group author, she's been featured at least 8 or 9 times over the years since I began this blog. Just last month, she shared something she treasures with us and introduced us to her latest creation, Touches of Time, a fictional account of her father's yet-to-be-solved murder.

Today we're getting a sneak peek into the book!

A decades-old unsolved homicide.

A grieving single mother-to-be.

A cold-case investigator.

Sarah Bishop goes through her deceased mother’s belongings and becomes immersed in the details of her grandfather’s unsolved homicide. Determined to find who was responsible, for the sake of her unborn baby, Sarah vows to seek out the answers her mother had failed to find.

Cold Case Investigator Ford Melcher is intrigued by Sarah’s dogged drive to solve the old mystery. His current case has reached a frustrating dead end, but he comes to believe it is somehow linked to Sarah’s quest. His desire to protect her from further hurt is put to the test, especially when he has secrets he’d rather not disclose.

Answers could remain elusive as to who struck Sarah’s grandfather and left him in a ditch. Will the search for those answers open doors for her to discover the life God planned? Can she accept that plan if it includes a man who wasn’t forthright with information?

Excerpt:

The walk to the park took more effort than ever.
Sarah left the trail for her favored picnic table, fanning and flapping her shirt away from her body to dispel the heat. She sank onto the bench with a sigh.
Her mother’s last days, followed by what she called her celebration of life, had kept Sarah too busy for strolling outside her apartment complex. She’d missed summer, teeming with new growth. Did nature grieve?
She closed her eyes to clear the fog, and sought warmth from the sun.
A thud on the table snapped open Sarah’s eyes. She covered her rounded stomach with one hand and batted away an intrusive soccer ball with the other.
“Sorry about that.” A buff guy with a killer grin toed the ball from midair, and then dribbled it away, running backwards.
Their gazes remained locked until one of his buddies called, “Hey, Melcher, the game’s this way.”
I need to close my gaping mouth and quit gawking. If I had a man like that around, I’d be inclined to rejoin the living.
Since he caught her eye, did that mean she rode the swell of coming out of her funk?
Events marched on whether she took an active role or not. Her brow tightened. She must be waking up to notice the hunky guy, sweat and all. He had to belong to some lucky woman.
His renewed attention drew her back to his wet black hair and brilliant blue eyes, increasing her pulse rate. Her breath hitched as though he sent invisible vibes through the summer air.
Forget taking another look. He had a life. She had a life. Sarah inhaled as deeply as she could and forced herself to break connection with his magnetic pull. Sliding across the table bench, she turned her back and wished for her waistline to return. She sauntered the way she’d come, grinned and grunted at the idea of taking the path closer to term. The mental picture of her waddling would be worth the trouble, since she’d soon have a baby to love and nurture. The prospect lightened her heart.
Love and nurture. Mom’s words. Family had mattered so much to Mom.
Sarah sniffed. Time to somehow scrounge up the energy to check on the status of a job assignment she’d put on hold.
Digging into Mom’s writings had crowded in on Sarah’s call to return to work. Would Mom’s words bring back the flood of tears, or give her comfort?
“I need to snap out of it. Baby and I will soon be a whole new family unit.”
Somehow, I’ll tackle that promise I made you, Mom.

Touches of Time can be purchased at Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
