#SaturdaySpotlight is on Michele Abshire & Letters from the Heart!

Good Morning Friends and Welcome to another edtion of Saturday Spotlight. Fall has come to SW Louisiana and I'm loving it. Cool nights/mornings and warm days make my heart happy. Another thing that makes my heart happy is sharing lovely authors and their books with you and today is no exception!

I met Michele Abshire years (decades?) ago when she joined Bayou Writers Group. Since, we've become good friends so it is my pleasure to present her today with her debut creative nonfiction book, Letters from the Heart.

Welcome, Michele! Please tell us how Letters from the Heart came about...

Thank you, Pam, I am SO excited to visit your blog today and talk about my book!

I started writing short stories sometime in 2004 to encourage and bless people in my church, family and friends. The first story I ever wrote, very short and simple, was called Thorns. From there I continued to write short stories and started giving them out to more and more people.  Eventually some of the stories were even published in some local and online magazines which included writing a column, “Michele’s Musings” for The Wordsmith Journal of which YOU had a great part. Through the years I had many readers saying I should compile the writings into a book, but the concerns and business of life prevented me from doing this for a long time. The dream was finally realized in late 2024 when “the some 106” stories written were finally compiled and published into Letters from the Heart. I believe the book is special because the stories are like “Love Letters” from God to the reader. They can bless, encourage, lift-up the hurting, reminding ever reader that they are beloved of God and special beyond measure to Him.

I agree, Michele! You write beautifully and I've always been uplifted when I read your work. Please give us more...

Sure, here is the Blurb:

The letters I write were born out of a desire to encourage and bless others. Though I wrote a few articles for our church bulletin back in 1999 I didn’t really start writing until I was about 44 years old (2004). Sometime around 2003-2004 our church was hosting ladies’ meetings and at the suggestion of my Pastor’s wife, Ann Mann, the ladies attending the meetings would take turns either calling, visiting or writing little notes of encouragement to the ladies in our church that were unable to come to church or going through various hard times. I am basically shy, so for me it was easier to write than to call or visit. Thus, I took up “Pen & Paper” and began to write notes of encouragement. I found that I really loved writing these little notes to our ladies and found that it was fast becoming one of the greatest joys of my heart. In time, I also learned the notes were a great source of blessing, often bringing much needed hope and encouragement to the reader.

Initially I only wrote encouraging notes in cards, and I was only writing to a select few in our church that were going through difficult times and/or not able to come to church for one reason or another. However, I had a great desire to reach more people once I realized how much it blessed the few. I remember praying and asking God to help me encourage everyone in our church, I wanted to reach out to more. The first story I ever wrote, very short and simple, was called Thorns. Our youth group had purchased a couple dozen roses the day before Mother’s Day 2004. We drove to all the homebound ladies’ homes to give them each a single red rose wishing them Mother’s Day Blessings. But the roses were “dangerous,” so we decided to snap off the thorns before handing them out. For unclear reasons I absently put the thorns in the middle console of my little gold Kia instead of discarding them. Thereafter, I would periodically look down at those little thorns and I would think two things, “I need to do something with those thorns” and “There is a story in those thorns.” But predictably, I would drive on forgetting about them. Then, one hot summer morning, after the umpteenth time of looking at them and having my usual thoughts, new reflections began to fully take shape in my mind, and the story was born. I ended up taking the thorns and wrapping each individual one in a little piece of clear cellophane tied with a pretty little ribbon and then taping them to the “Thorns” letter which I gave out to all our church family one Sunday service.

Until that fateful day, I really had no idea that I could actually write a story that someone would actually read! Now, in hindsight, I am of the firm belief that the ladies’ meeting request coupled with my shyness, the Mother’s Day gifting and the thorns sitting in my console for a few months was no accident. God was at the helm, gently leading, guiding, and answering my prayers so that I could reach more people. Even now, the stories are written as the Lord gives the ideas. And, as with the thorns, many of the stories are often sparked with the same “there’s a story in that” thought. Sometimes I write one a month and sometimes I have gone as long as six or more months without writing another one. I first I gave the letters out at church, a small congregation, about 30 or so families. More and more people started asking for them and the mail/email list continued to grow. Through a string of what I believe to be “God-incidence” meetings with magazine owners and publishers I was invited to publish the letters in local magazines and an online magazine. Through the years so many have come to me and said, Michele, you really should make a book with all your letters. Though I have always wanted to do just that, it is only now that dream is coming to fruition and this book is a realization of that dream. May the letters herein bless and encourage you.

Love in Christ, Michele

Beautiful! Now tell us a little more about yourself, and how readers can find you & Letters from the Heart...

Of Course!

A legal assistant by day and a writer when there are moments in time, Michele loves to write with the hope of bringing encouragement to others. Over the years she has been published in local and online magazines. She has recently compiled and published her short stories into a book, “Letters from the Heart.”

The writings are classified as “Creative Non-Fiction.” Most of the short stories are analogies. A story is told and then comparisons are made to God, His character, His Word, His promises, etc…

Michele truly believes, that in reality, the writings are thoughts straight from God’s heart. Divinely inspired from the throne of God to uplift spirits, bring hope to hurting hearts and needed encouragement to the reader.

Copies of Letters from the Heart can be purchased through Amazon in Ebook and Print, directly from me via email to: micheles.musings@gmail.com and we will make arrengements for payment and pickup OR at The Charmed Page bookstore 2927 Hodges St., Suite 2, Lake Charles, LA.

You can read an Excerpt from the book HERE.

Thank You SO much Michele for sharing your beautiful body of work with us. We certainly wish you the best of luck and God's blessings on this and in every area of your life.

Hope you enjoyed meeting Michele and learning about her book as much as I enjoyed spotlighting her, friends and that you'll check back weekly for another episode of Saturday Spotlight.

Until next time, take care and God Bless.

#WednesdayWordswithFriends Welcomes Jeff Rhodes!

Good Morning!

I am LOVING this weather... Cool nights, mild days, open windows, fresh air.....Hello Fall!

Today's guest is brand new to our blog so let's just turn it over to him. Take it away, Jeff....

Q: Using scripture and String Theory (of all things), you make the case that heaven is closer to us than we think. Can you explain?

A: I carefully lay the foundation for understanding what a higher dimension of space is. We only know three dimensions of space and one dimension of time. Picturing or understanding a fourth dimension of space is nearly impossible. That is why we usually make heaven an extension of our three-dimensional world. Everything in the Bible points to heaven being close—very close. Heaven was close to Jacob with a ladder reaching heaven (Genesis 28:10-12).  Elisha and his servant were able to see into the spiritual realm and the angelic beings were close. They were impacting the physical realm but were not detectable (2 Kings 2:9-11).  Stephen looks into heaven from the physical realm (Acts 7:54-60). God spoke to Paul from heaven (Acts 9:3-7).  Heaven was close enough for those present at Jesus’ baptism to hear God’s voice (Matthew 3:16-17). String theory says that more spatial dimensions do indeed exist. I believe heaven is in the next dimension, right next to where we reside in our three-dimensional world.

Q: You combine a lot of scientific research with biblical references in the book. How should Christians view the relationship between science and Christianity?

A: The Bible assumes the reality of the spiritual dimension while science points to a higher dimension or dimensions.  Scientific laws and truths reflect an intelligent creator. Christians should never fear science, nor should they shy away from it. The more we learn about the universe and what it is made of, the more we learn about the Grand Designer who created everything. Science can be a great way to reinforce one’s faith. We live in a mathematical universe, and we serve a God of order and laws. Whether it is space, the earth, or the human body, everything points to a Creator and not to billions of years of random chance. Though creation has been severely impacted in a negative way by sin, the fingerprints of the Creator can still be found the deeper and further we look.

Q: You say that angels can move across dimensions. How did you come to that conclusion?

A: There are occurrences with angelic beings in Scripture that are best explained if they are multi-dimensional beings. That means they primarily dwell in the spiritual realm or spiritual dimension but can enter our three-dimensional world. Angels are in God’s presence sometimes and sometimes in man’s presence. We usually think that an angel has some type of spiritual supersonic ability to travel from heaven to earth, then back. If heaven were 13 billion light-years above the earth, then that is some serious speed. I believe that the spiritual realm is a higher dimension, and it is close to us. Angels do not have to travel so far; they merely step into our dimension and easily enter our three-dimensional world from the spiritual realm. The Bible supports this belief with the example of Satan, a fallen angel, appearing in the physical realm and in the presence of God in the spiritual realm. Satan appears to Eve in the garden, Satan tempts Jesus in the wilderness, but in the book of Job we see Satan entering the presence of God after returning from walking back and forth on the earth. Satan is moving between dimensions. In Genesis 18, three angels visit Abraham. They eat, talk, and spend time with Abraham. Then two of the angels go to Sodom to speak with Lot. This is one of the clearest examples of angels moving across dimensions. In Genesis 28, Jacob has a dream where he sees angels ascending and descending from heaven to earth. God was revealing to Jacob the truth that angels move back and forth from the spiritual realm to the physical realm. In Luke 2, a host of angels appear to the shepherds in the fields and announce the birth of the Jesus. The Bible says that the angels left and went into heaven. This again is an example of angels moving from our physical dimension into the spiritual realm.

Q: Many Christians have dismissed the idea of a literal hell. What say you?

A: Though hell is a place most would rather not believe exists, the Bible talks about hell and gives warning to mankind to avoid ending up there. The Bible speaks of the reality of heaven and the reality of hell. Hell was created for Satan and his angels (Matthew 25:41). Therefore, hell is a place that spiritual beings will be located. The Bible also states that those who reject the gospel will be separated from the presence of God in hell. Just as we think three-dimensionally about heaven being way up, we tend to think of hell being down in the center of the earth. I attempt to challenge our thinking by suggesting that heaven is “up” in a higher dimension, where hell is “down” in a lower dimension. Hell is a dimension separated from God and His goodness (2 Thessalonians 1:9). The fact that the Bible speaks of the reality of hell is one of the primary reasons for the church to share the gospel and reach the world for Christ. If hell is not real, then it would certainly impact how (or if) we share the gospel at all. Christ came to earth, lived a perfect life, and died on the cross a humiliating and terrible death so people could avoid hell. If hell doesn’t exist, then Christ’s death was unwarranted.

Q: You say in the book that many Christians are turning to dark spirits more and more. Why is that? Do you have some examples?

A:  In 2018, Father Vincent Lampert told The Atlantic magazine that he had received over 1700 phone or email requests for exorcisms, by far the most he had ever received in one year. More professing Christians than ever are expressing a profound belief in the supernatural, especially the demonic. Televisions shows and movies about zombies, vampires, ghosts, communicating with the dead, and searching for the paranormal are more and more popular even among Christians. The internet is easier to access than ever before. Youth are learning about sex, gender identity, drugs, and have easy access to pornography. According to stats from SimilarWeb, internet users access porn websites more than Twitter, Wikipedia, or Netflix. Satan is in a battle for our minds, and he uses these types of entryways to influence people’s thoughts. These gateways are areas where people willfully turn from truth and are deceived. Further examples of entryways could be practicing or experimenting in the occult, taking drugs, past sins, or various kinds of abuse or trauma. Satan will use these gateways to wage war against believers by getting them to believe lies instead of truth.

Q: You say that the Apostle Paul tells us that we are in both a physical existence as well as a higher dimension existence at the same time. Can you explain?

A: Paul talks about the spiritual realm at length in his letter to the believers at Ephesus. He uses a Greek word translated “heavenly places” in the ESV five times. In every instance, Paul is speaking of the spiritual realm where heaven is and angels dwell. In Ephesians 2:6 Paul states that the believer is presently seated with Christ in the heavenly places. Some Bible scholars refer to the believer being positionally in the spiritual realm. In other words, they are not there yet but will be when they die and go to heaven. Pastor Tony Evans seems to believe they are there now, as quoted in my book. The believer is physically in the three-dimensional world, but when we were given life spiritually by God, we are at the same time in the spiritual realm with Christ. Our spiritual life gives us a connection into the spiritual realm even before we die.

The Bible tells of a spiritual realm where heaven, angels, and God reside. Where is this mysteriously invisible realm? Science has opened the door to the possibility of higher spatial dimensions. Could this be where heaven is? Using God’s Word, this book will present evidence for the reality of the spiritual realm and also lay out the scientific evidence, from Einstein’s theory of relativity to string theory, that points to the possibility of a higher dimension or dimensions. Through this book, the everyday Christian will learn how to view the spiritual dimension or spiritual realm in a deeper way and will see clearly that there is much more to our universe than meets the eye. The seeking skeptic will also be presented with evidence that God is real and the Bible is His communication to man. The foundation is laid from the Bible, from science and from understanding that we are three-dimensional beings created by a Grand Programmer to live in the physical and spiritual universe. Because of sin, mankind lost the ability to see the spiritual realm, but through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, we can once again access the spiritual realm and live fully as God our creator intends.

#SaturdaySpotlight is on Jamie Saloff & Marvelous Messages from Your Faith!

Good Morning from Bandera, TX!

You know I always have a good time when I'm at my home away from home and where my soul feels at peace the most. I'll fill you all in on the trip later. Meanwhile, please welcome new-to-our-blog author, Jamie Saloff as she shares with us her book Marvelous Messages from Your Faith.

Marvelous Messages from Your Faith, a simple method to manifest your desires and receive answered prayers.

When faced with difficult life situations—especially when we are feeling helpless—prayer is often our go-to tool for guidance and hope. But if your requests frequently go unanswered, if you're not manifesting your needs, or if you sometimes wonder if anyone hears your prayers at all, this little book is for you.

Most of us have never been taught how to pray other than, perhaps, ancient, rote words to recite. We’ve never been shown how to frame a request that unties God's hands and frees the heavenly hosts to assist us.

A champion of prayer since childhood, Jamie Saloff shares her methods for creating simple requests that get answers. You’ll quickly build your faith and increase your success rate.

No matter how you imagine God (the Divine, Angels, Guides, an invisible force), this non-denominational, quick-to-read book will provide valuable insights into the power of prayer.

My favorite, everyday watch had been missing for months. I had looked everywhere but hadn’t found it. The watch had been gone for so long, most people would have given up. But I didn’t. I felt I would still find it.

I had read somewhere that “nothing is ever lost” to God, that he always knows where everything is. So I began to pray that God would find my watch.

The watch wasn’t very expensive. I could have easily bought a new one. I just always had liked it and wanted it back.

One day while out golfing, I started digging in my golf bag for something. For some reason, I opened a pocket I rarely opened.

Guess what was inside?

My watch! The battery had died, but otherwise, it was in perfect condition. I didn’t even remember putting my watch in my golf bag. Finding my watch grew my faith, so I tried it on some other things.

We had a sign hanging in front of our house, as many of the cottages in our lakeside neighborhood had names. One day it disappeared. We informed the police, but they did not offer us much hope of recovering it.

My husband wanted to make a new one, but I kept telling him no. I knew our sign would somehow find its way home. God knew where to find the sign, so I left it up to him.

A few months passed.

We were sitting on our front deck when a car stopped out front. A man called from his car, “Did you used to have a sign hanging here?” He pointed to the lamp post and empty hangers.

“Yes,” we replied.

Soon we learned that some college kids had stolen many local signs as part of a fraternity stunt and left them in a rental house this man owned. He found all the signs behind the piano when the students moved out. He decided to return any he could.

The sign now hangs in front of our home in its rightful place.

If you have lost something, God knows where it is.

This Supercharger has worked for me for a great many things. There are still some things I’m missing, but I am being patient.

My mother used to make dolls for the Christmas tree. She sold them all over the country and through stores like Marshall Fields and Frederick Nelson. Of course, the best set was hers because she had all the originals including the ones that never made it to market.

During every holiday season, we honor my mother by hanging the ornaments she created on the tree. Unfortunately, my tree is a little bare. My mother always promised to give me her set since I didn’t have one of my own. Sadly, due to complicated circumstances, they ended up with my stepfather’s third wife, and, unbeknown to us, she sold them in a yard sale.

Some of my mother’s ornaments have found their way home including a special one made just for me. In the sixth grade, I wrote a report on Finland. My mother made me a traditional Finnish dress to wear and a doll to match. I surely was blessed to find the doll, along with other of her ornaments on eBay.

Some are still out there, including her trademark piece, The Storyteller (an old man sitting in a rocking chair, slippered feet on a footstool, reading a book – see Iaulandas.com). God knows where to find The Storyteller and the other missing dolls. Someday, He will bring them home too.

If you’ve lost something you loved, God knows where it is. Ask him to find it for you, to protect it, and to bring it home safely.

Worship through Verse

Most of us hear the word worship and think of singing during a church service. Not particularly so. We don’t need a location to seek the Lord. Worship happens anywhere that involves spirit and truth.

Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks (John 4:23 NIV).

“In spirit,” means submission of the human spirit, according to verse 24, “God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.” In order to worship the One True God, a person must have an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ, God’s Son. Jesus is the only way to the Father. Once we repent and acknowledge our need for a Savior, we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Thus, we are able to worship in spirit and in truth.

As His children, God is with us in the Spirit no matter what time of day or night we call on Him. By worshiping Him through reading the truth of His Word, the Bible, He works through me. I can’t write a thing that honors Him unless I admit I need His help.

No “me, me, me”
  But Jesus, Jesus, Jesus
    He’s worthy of all …

All my love
  All my energy
    All my worship.

My last visit here on a Wednesday, I talked about a journal of modern-day verse that I penned, “Worship through Verse.” I cherish the pictures of my volume on coffee tables I’ve seen where loved ones worship in their living rooms or at their kitchen tables, using those verses as a devotional to supplement worship.
In other words, we can worship anywhere and at any time, as long as we worship in the Spirit and in truth.

Psalm 95:5-6
The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land.
Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.

Country Worship

God’s breath on the breeze
Kisses my soul, my spirit

Dirt beneath my feet
Reminds me God made Adam

The heavenly sky above me
Is where Jesus will appear

The songs of earth and sky
Made by God’s holy breath

My soul soars in praise
What an awesome God is He

I thank God I’m a country girl
Where I’m free to sing out loud

Heart and breath on the breeze
Heart and voice free to worship.

Psalm 100:2 reads: Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.

#SaturdaySpotlight is on Linda Rondeau & Who Put the Vinegar in the Salt

Good Morning and Happy Easter!

Over 2000 years ago today, the world lay in wait. Fear and confusion were the dominant emotions but God had a plan and a surprise that would be revealed tomorrow. No matter what you're experiencing, friend, hang in there for with every crucifixion, there has to be a resurrection.

Our guest today has visited before, although it's been a while so please welcome Linda back with her new book, Who Put the Vinegar in the Salt. Take it away, Linda!

THE STORY BEHIND WHO PUT THE VINEGAR IN THE SALT

I write fiction. At least primarily. The first fiction book I wrote was, I Prayed for Patience, God Gave Me Children. After many versions, I republished the book to include a short study guide after chapter to be used by groups or individuals in discussion.

Meanwhile, back in the jungle … the jungle of my mind … a new nonfiction book began to take place. As I observed both my own personal struggles and those within the church “to do” Christianity, I began a four year study to try to understand why Christ has called us salt. He has not called us to be like the world. Rather, God’s desire is for us to be entirely different. Not by our own power, but through the working of the Holy Spirit.

Through the course of my four-year study, I began to see a common thread. God does the work, he chisels us into the image he has planned from the beginning. However, our clinging to the old ways of thinking, our search for the latest psychological quick fix to our situations, deter us from the process God has begun in us and desires to complete.

The book is divided into 13 chapters, the traditional church “quarterly” concept and includes portions for individual or group study. I do plan to do a series of short videos to accompany the book and hit on the key aspects of each chapter.

Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to share my vision.

BLURB: The world offers much beneficial self-help advice. Shouldn’t the Christian seek to be the best possible version of themselves? Aren’t we supposed to be good people?

Why not look to the world to solve life’s problems?

Because God has called us to be salt.

While there is much good to be found, like vinegar, the world’s best advice falls short of God’s recipe to live a victorious Christian life.

In a down-home, friendly manner, the author provides analogies, inspirational stories, anecdotes, a wealth of Scripture, and optional study guides for both individuals and groups, inviting the believer to discover God’s desires for his salt.

EXCERPT:

Part I: Called to Be Salt

You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses

its flavor,

how shall it be seasoned?

It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out

and trampled underfoot by men.

—Matthew 5:13

Chapter One—Called to Be New

While cooking one day, I accidentally dropped the saltshaker into a bowl of vinegar. The salt within the shaker was ruined, and I had to throw it out. The vinegar also so contaminated the container, I finally gave up and threw it out as well.

Someone told me I could have sterilized the saltshaker to remove the contaminants. Perhaps. But the truth remained the salt within was unusable. The image of the ruined salt stayed with me for some time as I considered why Jesus calls his followers salt and how precious we are in his sight. I was pricked with the realization of how a minute portion of vinegar had spoiled a good thing.

When Jesus spoke of “salt” in the Sermon on the Mount, he addressed the throngs who followed him—Gentiles as well as Jews—and his intimate circle of disciples. How strange to be called salt. I can see those along the hillside scratching their heads. “Did we hear Jesus

correctly?”

“What’s salt got to do with anything?”

“Who is Jesus calling the salt of the earth?”

Unlike our common table salt of today, salt in New Testament times, though abundant, was a precious commodity. Roman soldiers were paid with salt, from which we derive our word for salary.

Many theologians have likened Christians to table salt and its properties, a seasoning to induce thirst, add flavor, and preserve. There is a problem with only liking this reference to today’s version of table salt. Many scholars believe the symbolism is far deeper.

Many Bible scholars believe the Sermon on the Mount was directed at those who recognized Christ as the Messiah and believed he was sent by God. Though some theological aspects of his divinity would yet be revealed, many already understood he’d come to show them the way to an intimate knowledge of God.

His words, preserved for us by New Testament writers, may have been intended to show those who sought after God, both present and future, the key to living victoriously in a sinful world—a world that not only rejected our Lord but would reject us because we

are one with him.

We Are New

When we accept Christ’s substitutionary work on the cross, personalize it, confess our helplessness to obtain salvation through our own efforts, we begin to realize our sinful nature. God accepts us, fills us, and begins a work in us. We who were once vinegar are transformed into salt. We are no longer the person we once were, and we are being transformed into what God intended for us to be from the beginning of time.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation

has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

(2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV).

Our newness is God created. This newness is not something he refashions like an old garment redesigned or handed down. What he creates is entirely different than what we were before. When we become new in Christ, we become reconciled to God’s purpose and plan for our lives. Too often, we envision this plan as action. In truth, God’s plan is for us to be one in knowledge and understanding of our right relationship with him—how this newness will develop and define our lives. Then why do we want to keep being like the person we once were—a person who no longer exists. If we are new, then why do we cling to the old? Perhaps God’s intention is for the believer to become the image of Christ—our true identity and calling.

Let’s examine the Amplified text for the above verse:

Therefore if anyone is in Christ [that is, grafted in,

joined to Him by faith in Him as Savior], he is a new

creature [reborn and renewed by the Holy Spirit];

the old things [the previous moral and spiritual

condition] have passed away. Behold, new things

have come [because spiritual awakening brings a

new life].

#WednesdayWordswithFriends welcomes Sandra Bretting

Good Morning Friends!

In January, Sandra Bretting shared a peek into her new book, Shameless Persistence. Today she returns to give us more information of her journey from her death bed to medical miracle. However, before we turn the blog over to Sandra, I'd like to announce February's gift card winner.....

Kathy Bailey!

Congratulations Kathy. I've emailed you already but if you did not receive it, please get in touch with me and I'll get your gift card right over.

Now on with our Wednesday Words with Friends guest....

Q: You are not supposed to be alive today. Talk about what happened to you.
A: Early last year, I developed a high fever and nausea that I thought was caused by the flu.  Instead, doctors discovered a massive infection in my stomach, which led to a condition called sepsis. Then, my lungs began to fail because they had to pump so many antibiotics through my system. I was put on life support, and my family was told they needed to say goodbye, because I wasn’t going to make it. But a funny thing happened. First, a few people prayed over me, and then more and more as area churches got involved. The ER staff couldn’t explain it, but my condition inexplicably reversed, and my vital signs gradually improved to the point I could be taken off life support. A pulmonologist who studied a scan of my lungs was amazed to find every sign of trauma had vanished.

Q: Why did you decide to write this book and relive this traumatic experience?
A:
Because people often doubt whether God still performs miracles, when I’m proof that He does. Our society seems to have forgotten who really controls this world, and the devil would like nothing more than for Christians like me to stay silent when God does something amazing.

Q: What have you learned about prayer through this process?
A: That having a healthy prayer life doesn’t just happen, and it doesn’t come naturally to most of us. That’s why I studied scripture, and I also looked to the lives of exemplary Christians to learn how to make the most of this gift God’s given us.

Q: Why did you title the book “Shameless Persistence?”
A: I titled the book Shameless Persistence: Lessons from a Modern Miracle, because in Luke, Jesus specifically told his disciples to pray with shameless persistence, like a man who asks his friend for help and won't take no for an answer.

Picture
Q: How do you answer someone who prayed for their loved one, yet they were not healed?
A: That’s one of the hardest questions I faced when I was released from the hospital. I had people corner me and demand to know why God spared my life, but not the life of their child/sibling/parent. All I can say is that God has said “no” to many people in the past who we would think deserved a “yes” (including Jesus himself), but it all comes back to this ultimate truth: God knows what’s best for all of us, even if we don’t understand it or agree with it.

Q: Are there three key lessons you learned about prayer through your experience?
A: The three key lessons I would offer people would be: 1) Take a good look around you whenever you feel as if God has ignored a prayer request. Often He has answered the request, only not in the way we hoped, so we don't see (or we refuse to see) an answer that's right in front of us. 2) Remember Jesus' response when Peter asked about John's future. Jesus basically told him, "It's none of your business." Whenever we compare our lives and the answers to our prayers to the answers others receive, we're negating everything God already has done for us. 3) Anytime we receive a "no," we need to remember whose company that puts us in. God told Jesus "no" when he asked to be spared the cross; C.S. Lewis asked God to spare his new bride, but she succumbed to cancer anyway; and King David asked God to spare his child, to no avail. By seeing their reactions to God's no's, we can learn how to handle our disappointments better.

Q: How are your prayers different today than they were before you became sick?
A: For one thing, the timing of my prayers is different now. I used to try to fix problems on my own (whether I admitted it or not), and then give them to God as a “last resort.” Now, He’s the first one I turn to. The tone of my prayers also has changed. Instead of asking for God’s help in a way that benefits me, I’ve realized that very little in this life is really about me:  it’s about furthering God’s kingdom in whatever way He sees fit. Even if it makes my life harder.

Q: Do you consider yourself a modern-day miracle? Why or why not?
A: I definitely consider myself a modern-day miracle. Look, when every medical specialist on your team agrees you should’ve died, then you know God is in charge. Here I had the best hospital, brilliant doctors, and enough medicine to stock a pharmacy (my medical chart ran over a hundred pages), and still no one could cure me. No human, that is.

#WednesdayWordswithFriends welcomes Denise Broadwater

Good Morning!

Have to rush out the door this morning so no time for chit-chat. Earlier this month we met a brand new (to us) author Denise Broadwater when she shared her book with us, so please welcome her back as she shares more experiences about A House with Holes.....

Greg is my life and world and as my husband of many years, it is as it should be.  We have three wonderful, employed children with lives of their own.  His career is going well and my book has been on Amazon for four months.  But days like today, I cannot help but be overcome by fear.  Will this renovation, our house filled with holes get the final billowing laugh, “See, I got you.  You gutted my insides, weathered all the storms, and are nearly done, but in the end you didn’t make this final cut.  YOU ARE GOING DOWN. “  The house draws us into conflict and stress.  As close as we are to being done with the major construction projects, I wait for the proverbial shoe to  drop.  Sometimes, I wonder if we as a couple will survive our renovation in Charleston.

“Denise, stop daydreaming…nail gun.   Please, come out of your head and think about what you are doing.  We have to get this done.”  Like a surgeon’s assistant, I stand next to Greg physically ready to anticipate the next tool, but I get bored.  Greg’s demands increase now to a rant because he’s been frustrated most of the morning.  I know I need to stay focused.  He words play like a TV in the background.   It appears I am listening, but I am looking for any reason to zone out.  Afterall, I’ve heard it all before:  my absentmindedness, why can’t I focus, everyone else is priority and he needs me.

“Denise, if you hang in here with me, we can finish this floor today.  It’s crunch time, baby, each thing builds on the other.  I know it’s not what you want to be doing right now.”  I smile and roll my eyes in an extended blink.  His banter and sarcasm flow over me.  Right.  What woman could have survived these past years?  And these last days, the little things drive me mad. Looking around I see the layer of dust covering the bar, tools on the rug in the dining room, and paint cans stacked in the fireplace.  Refusing to let Greg’s last words penetrate, I blankly stare at his extended hand.

“Hammer, Denise!”  I startle back into helper-mode and hand him a hammer.  One of the advantages of my scatteredness is the freedom to zone when convenient.  We quickly fall back into the rhythm of work.  As we near the end of the laying the last pieces of flooring, Greg looks for another box of material.

“Denise, I am afraid we are short one box of flooring.”

He runs back into the master bedroom and in a few minutes has searched every crevice for flooring.  Yelling from the back room, “I let the flooring specialist calculate the material and he must have gone short.”  Greg disappears to the courtyard where we have been cutting all day.  None of the pieces are long enough to give consistency.  “These pieces are not going to cut it. Let’s call and see about getting a new one.”

I look for the number, then press call and put it on speaker.  Still open on the morning of Christmas Eve, but this is not the time of year to be in this pickle.

“Mr. Broadwater, I hate to be the bearer of bad news.  This flooring’s been discontinued and there isn’t a box of flooring left in South Carolina.”  We both look at each other like this cannot be happening right now.  “Let me do a company search and maybe we will have a box left in Georgia or North Carolina.  Give me a few minutes.”

Greg mutes the phone.

“Denise, what are we going to do.  We are this close to being done.  I hoped we could leave for Christmas with the furniture moved back into place.”

We both stand staring at the phone, waiting quietly afraid of this man’s answer…

“We found three locations in Georgia with a few boxes.  Two are outside Atlanta:  Kennesaw, and Duluth and Newsome, near Valdosta.  If you have it delivered, there will be a large surcharge.”

“Give us a minute.”  And Greg presses the mute button, again.

“Valdosta is out, why don’t we go to Duluth the day after Christmas?  We don’t have much choice. ”

“Sure, this is happening.  Of course, this is the shoe dropping though it was not exactly to my worry. ” I shake my head.  We are both so done with obstacles and issue surrounding our project.    Greg’s eyes close and his head tilts down.  There is a weary tiredness even sleep don’t touch.  It’s through both of us, but Greg is bad.  He’s more tired than I have ever seen him.  He presses the phone speaker on again.

“Reserve those in Duluth and we will pick them up.”

“So, I know we should be grateful we found the flooring, but I hate cutting Christmas short to go to Atlanta.”

“It’s the sacrifice we have to make to get this done and behind us.  You are still with me, aren’t you, Denise.”

“This house is NOT going to win.”

#SaturdaySpotlight is on Denise Broadwater & A House With Holes

Good Morning and Welcome!

I want to thank everyone who has left a comment on my January posts. I'll be announcing the gift-card winner on Wednesday so check back and be sure to leave comments often so you can be put in the drawing!

Today's guest is brand new to our blog and brought to us by PrimeStar Publicity.

So Nice to meet you, Denise. Now let's hear about your new book!

''If you're with me, Denise, I can promise you there is nothing in this mess we cannot fix.''

When veteran rehabbers Denise and Greg Broadwater purchase a dilapidated Charleston Cottage in a sketchy part of town for less than the value of the lot, they soon uncover complications they didn't bargain for--both in the house and in their relationship. As a licensed counselor, Denise thought she could handle anything that came up in their 30-year marriage. However, she didn't plan on open dirt floors, a creepy bathroom or wildlife in her kitchen, and that's just for starters. Heartfelt and humorous, dramatic and down-to-earth, A House With Holes is a memoir with a message as Denise compares the house renovation to her adjustments as a new empty-nester.

EXCERPTS:

From the intro:

As I stand at the stove, out of the corner of my eye I glimpse movement. I look over my shoulder, and—moving slowly away through the plastic curtain into the construction area—I see the gray-brown bushy tail of a racoon.

I shut off the stove, stick the soup pot into the warm oven, and slam the door into the dorm room. My first impulse is to fire off an angry text to Greg, but know I’ll regret what I would write in my current emotional state.

Instead, I tremble on the bed with a blanket over me. The longer I wait, the more I feel sorry for myself. How much of this am I supposed to stand?

From Chapter 2:

My craftsman husband, Greg, works for Liollio Architecture, a firm that has spent more than sixty years designing in Charleston. He’s very aware of what a typical renovation in this town will require of us. Each house is like opening a time capsule with hopes of discovering covered treasure. Each phase of the process comes under scrutiny to ensure the house preserves its southern heritage.

Despite the constraints, in 2012 Greg and I share a dream of owning a house on the Charleston peninsula. We look at the surrounding suburbs, but are drawn to live in this exciting city. Upscale neighborhoods, old world charm, the convenience of walking to all the local restaurants—this is where we want to be.

We enlist Realtor Leon Polk to help us find a small cottage to restore on the upper westside. Several weeks pass, and several opportunities collapse due to quick sales or poor timing. Taking matters into our own hands, Greg and I spend evenings religiously surfing realty sites and tax maps looking for the right place.

Leon is happy to let us search because he believes we are looking for a pipe dream, impossible to find. What we appreciate most about him is his willingness to show us anything, anywhere. Greg is faithful to do searches for several weeks.

A House with Holes can be purchased at Amazon.

Wow...sounds like an intriguing memoir! Thank you so much for sharing. We certainly wish you the best of luck and God's blessings with it.

Thanks for stopping by friends. Be sure to leave a comment and be entered in February's drawing for a $15.00 gift card!

Until next time, take care and God bless.

#SaturdaySpotlight is on Sandra Bretting & Shameless Persistence!

Good Morning Friends!

I always love a true miracle story. Movies and books like, Breakthrough and Miracles from Heaven do so much to build our faith and trust. That's why today's guest, brought to us from Adams Media is so special. Critically-acclaimed mystery author, Sandra Bretting shares her personal story of a miraculous healing in her new release, Shameless Persistence.

How many times have you been asked to pray for someone and thought, “Here I go again?” Maybe it’s for someone’s physical healing. Or his financial situation. Perhaps someone’s made a bad life choice and now she’s suffering the consequences. (The infamous “unspoken prayer request.”) Whatever it is, sometimes prayer fatigue sets in. What’s the point? What difference does it make? I probably won’t even find out what happens to him or her.
And sometimes that’s exactly what happens.

We pray for days, for weeks, for months, even, but we never see an answer to our prayers. We wonder whether God still hears us, or whether he even cares. Then, he startles us awake. He performs a miracle right before our eyes, at a pace that takes our breath away.

Do you need a shot of adrenaline today to bring your prayer life back into focus? A reason to believe you’re not wasting your time? Some real-life examples to bolster your faith in prayer? I hope you find it here, and more. Because my story shows how God works through the prayers of his people. How he heard their cries over one icy weekend in Houston, when more than a thousand Christians came together to rattle the gates of heaven on my behalf. Sometimes, the people who prayed over me didn’t even know my name.

Excerpt from “Chapter 1: AND SO IT BEGINS” from Shameless Persistence

I never set out to be a medical miracle. I never wanted to be a medical miracle. But sometimes, what we want and what God wants are two very different things.

Like many people mentioned in the Bible, God chose someone perfectly ordinary that day when he reached down from heaven in January 2018.

Just another fifty-five-year-old suburban wife and mother who lived on the outskirts of Houston, Texas, with her family. My posse included a husband of almost thirty years (Roger), two daughters (Brooke and Dana), and a slaphappy rescue dog with more brawn than brains (Chance). Brooke had recently married her college sweetheart and moved to Dallas to pursue a career. Meanwhile, Dana lived at home while she wrapped up her senior year of high school and applied to colleges both near and far. Life was pretty good, to be honest. Ever since I graduated from The University of Missouri School of Journalism in 1985, I’d wanted to be a writer. I’d freelanced for newspapers like the Los Angeles Times, when I still lived in California, and then for the Houston Chronicle, when our family moved to Texas for Roger’s career.

Deep down, though, I wanted to write mysteries; my favorite kind of books. After taking a zillion creative writing classes and reading even more rejection letters, God finally granted me a publishing contract in 2012. I wrote one hardcover mystery, and then another. By 2015, I had a six-book contract with a New York publisher to write something called “cozy mysteries,” which are soft-boiled stories that dial down the sex and violence. I was right in the middle of writing my fifth book in the series when Baby New Year arrived in 2018. In other words, I had a loving husband (check), a job I’d always wanted (check) and two amazing daughters. (Check, check.) Life wasn’t perfect, but it was close enough.

Does that sound familiar? The Bible is full of people like me…ordinary people with everyday lives, who chug blissfully along until God upends everything in one fell stroke.

Consider the prophet Jonah. He lived in a mountaintop village about eight-hundred years before Christ was born. Jonah had everything going for him: a close community of family and friends; access to both the Sea of Galilee and the Mediterranean Sea; and a respectable career as an oracle for God.

What he didn’t have was a desire to preach to the Israelites’ sworn enemy, the Assyrians. So, when God called him to do that very thing in a city called Nineveh, he balked. Several calamitous detours later, including one inside the smelly stomach of a fish, he finally got with God’s program and got his life back on track.

While nothing quite so dramatic happened to me, I felt very much like Jonah pre-Assyrians: blissfully unaware things could ever change.

Until the morning of January 17, 2018, when I woke up feeling “not quite right.” I’d been suffering from lower back pain for a few days, but I passed it off to a wonky spinal cord that acted up every now and again.

Wow, wow, wow! Sounds like a book we can all use to bolster our own spiritual walk. Thanks Sandra for sharing your story!
