#SaturdaySpotlight is on Kristopher Ackoury & Fear of the Sky

Good Morning!

As you know I love promoting authors and their books on Saturday Spotlight, but one of my greatest pleasures in doing this is hosting a local author with his/her debut novel. Today I get the privelege to introduce you to Kristopher Ackoury with Fear of the Sky, a dark, fantasy novel set in post-apocalyptic times.

Welcome, Kristopher! Please share your blurb & an excerpt from Fear of the Sky and tell us why you wrote it...

Thanks for having me, Pam. I'm excited to share with your readership!

First and foremost, I’ve always wanted to tell an exciting adventure story full of monsters and meaning. Without that general drive, I never would have started writing.

To me, the most important idea in this book is our very human tendency to point the finger at others when a problem arises without considering how we might be contributing to it. I started writing it during the cultural, political, and pandemic warfare of 2020 and 2021, so maybe you can imagine how heavy humanity’s tribalistic tendencies felt to me at the time. The story is primarily an action-adventure story about dragons and rescue missions, but the protagonist’s journey is also my examination of the challenge of taking an honest look at yourself and admitting that you might be a bigger part of the problem than you think.

The second major idea behind this story is a little more abstract. There’s an ancient idea that attaining interior silence is necessary to hear God in the depths of one's heart. People have always struggled with various forms of worldly noise (think excessive devotion to entertainment, argument, comfort, consuming tragedy, activism, etc.) that threaten holy silence, but the modern technological age makes things particularly difficult. The noise is often addictive too. We often seek it as an escape from a world that sickens us, but it ends up making us sicker. I approached this concept metaphorically rather than directly, and I had a lot of fun doing it.

Of course, there are many more whys I could describe, but these two are by far the biggest reasons I wrote this particular story.

Here's the Blurb: A father journeys into the post-apocalyptic unknown to rescue his six-year-old daughter before she is sacrificed to a dragon.

Dragons scour the ruins of a fallen civilization. A god known only as The One Who Speaks set its destruction in motion. Humanity's last refuge, Ivory City, clings to survival with a dwindling supply of dragon-killing poison. Iko Phainor lives a lonely life as the last surviving adherent of the ancient religion of Silence.

When Iko's young daughter, Cas, is kidnapped for sacrifice, his search for her leads him into a brewing war that threatens Ivory City’s existence. There, his fate intertwines with Zerah, a widow obsessed with revenge against the dragon that murdered her family, and Makus, a warrior manipulated by the whispered lies of The One Who Speaks. Together, they must face their deepest fears, mounting betrayals, and battle-hardened monsters to save Cas—and perhaps the world—from a horrific end.

And an Excerpt: Jynsomn had been the crowning achievement of the Kingdom of Ekara before the dragons came. Hewn from the granite and pristine marble of the nearby Sepentrio Mountains, indulgent palaces, proud archways, and impossible, towering monuments had sprawled for miles. Water still gurgled through a labyrinthine network of aqueducts to once-luxurious bathhouses and the derelict waterwheels of millhouses and forges. An ingenious sewer system still flushed away filth so people could pretend they weren’t people.

But despite Jynsomn’s architects’ beliefs and best efforts, the city had always been mortal. It had fared no better than anywhere else against the dragons. What little remained of its grandeur dissolved silently into the tangled wilderness.

Iko cut through the ruins with ease. He’d been taking the same path to Cas every Saturday evening for almost two years now. He knew the surest way to stay out of sight of the sky, depending on the season, and which structures were stable enough to travel through without risk of being buried alive. Most importantly, he knew the best ways to avoid any of the other survivors who lived there. Not counting Cas or Iko’s friend, Elex, there were only twenty-nine of them. But most of them were drunkards and heathens, and Iko usually avoided unnecessary dealings with them.

Wonderful, Kris! Give us the low down on you and where we can find Fear of the Sky and YOU...

Kris Ackoury began his creative life as a musician before turning to fiction, where he found a lasting home. He is currently represented by Anjanette Barr of Dunham Literary. Kris writes character-driven stories that blend the sense of danger and adventure found in favorites like Jurassic Park, Star Wars, and The Lord of the Rings with ideas drawn from thinkers such as C.S. Lewis, G.K. Chesterton, and Cardinal Robert Sarah. When he’s not writing, Kris is usually trying to keep up with his five young children or spending time with his lovely wife.

#SaturdaySpotlight is on Michael D Smith and Comm Wealth

Good Morning!

Today's guest is new to our blog so please welcome Michael D Smith with a peek into his book, Comm Wealth.

The CommWealth system, has created a society in which there is no legal claim to any kind of private property. Any object from your house to the clothes you’re wearing can be demanded by anyone, to be enjoyed for thirty days before someone else can request it. As actors in the Forensic Squad theatrical troupe attempt to adapt to this chaos, their breaking of the Four Rules sustaining the system, as several members navigate betrayals, double agents, and murder to find themselves leading a suicidal revolution.

Excerpt:

Rule One - You are free to enjoy the chosen object for thirty days. During this period no other person may request it.

Rule Two - The requestor is untouchable for thirty days by the person asked. Attempts at retaliation, such as demanding unusually large quantities from the original requestor after the thirty-day period, carry stiff penalties.

Rule Three - Once you ask somebody for something, you can never ask him or her for anything else again.

Rule Four - You can never ask for the same thing back from the person who got it from you, not even after his or her thirty days of enjoyment.

“You know... everything’s free...” Allan blurted.

“Well, of course everything’s free, Allan,” Jill said. “You really don’t have to give me anything for the refill, you know.”

“Well, if everything’s free, why don’t people go after what they want?”

“Well... they do,” Richard said. “Like, people were a little shy through about October, but after that... hell, you know how everyone’s getting whatever they want. I mean, it’ll be
a miracle if Steve gets back here with both the Volvo and the lumber.”

“Well, he’ll have the lumber,” Lisa said, “because he has thirty days to enjoy that. But he might be dragging it back on foot, that’s for sure.”

“No, he’s resourceful. He’ll get that truck!” Jill laughed, hand going to her magnificent breast.

“No, you know that’s not what I’m talking about,” Allan said. “I’m talking about what people really, deep down, want.”

“Well... I guess...” Jill said. “I mean, of course, at that level it’s not material things... that you want...”

“That’s... right...” Richard said, probing for her eyes.

They finally clicked on his for half a second.

“Right! Obviously!” Allan said. “So why don’t we have the guts to go after what we really do want?”

“Well... sometimes I guess we do... screw up the courage...” Jill whispered.

“Lisa, what do you think?” Allan demanded.

Lisa looked at the floor. “Well... sometimes... there are good reasons... for not... for not...”

“See... deep down,” Allan gulped, “I want Lisa!”

Everyone looked at the floor. Lisa turned to the front windows, chin high, as if she hadn’t heard a word.

“If everything’s free, why not Lisa?”

“What?” Lisa gasped.

“Why don’t I go after what I really want? It’s all so simple! And, look, I have two witnesses, Richard and Jill!”

“What?” Richard and Jill cried together.

“It’s simple! Lisa, I hereby ask—for you!” Allan grinned. “It’s really so simple! She has to be mine!”

Lisa whirled off her stool. “I can’t believe this! Allan, you’re crazy!”

“No, you have to give yourself to me! Isn’t that right, Jill? Richard?”

“Well... well, no, Allan... you’re joking!” Richard said.

“I’m not joking! Lisa, you’re mine, that’s all there is to it!”

Lisa’s eyes were wide with fear and disgust.

“Lisa, he’s—just joking,” Jill said.

“I’m leaving. Goodbye,” Lisa said. Allan stood and caught her wrist.

“Dammit, Allan, this is stupid!” Richard said, coming off his own stool.

“Look, I don’t care what anyone thinks!” Allan said. “I’ve made up my mind! It’s Lisa I want! And she’s mine! She’s mine!”

“Let me go!” Lisa moaned, jerking free.

hhmmm...definitely sounds different and intriguing. Thanks for sharing Michael!

#SaturdaySpotlight is on Jeremy Higley & The Son of Dark

Good Morning and Welcome to Saturday Spotlight!

Well the temperatures have dropped enough over the week to make it feel like fall her in SW Louisiana. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone in Florida and the Carolina's and everywhere else Hurricane Mike decides to plunder.

Today's guest has shared something he treasures with us before, so we welcome Jeremy Higley back to share more info on his book, Tales of the Darksome Torn: The Son of Dark.

A thousand years ago, the wizards of the Nynsa  failed to follow the prophecy of the Darksome Thorn, and now the greatest evil of their time has survived into the next age.

Now, the Darksome Thorn has revealed a new prophecy, and the very evil they failed to kill is working to use that prophecy to his advantage.

Forces of evil run rampant in the land of Duskain. Ancient powers are stirring. A greater darkness is imminent...

...and Skel, the foster son of an elephant herder, finds himself caught in the middle of everything. Will Skel's newly developing powers be a help or a hindrance...

EXCERPT:

Marga pointed to the south. Zar didn’t turn, but he heard a gasp of recognition from Skel.
“Aja-aja,” he said with concern. “Three of them, about two miles away.”

Zar sighed in trepidation. The aja-aja were rare, enormous snakes prowling the Eltar plains, preying on elephants and any herders foolish enough to attack them. They had three heads each and stocky, powerful bodies to match, and could grow to over forty feet long. They killed and then predigested their prey by spitting streams of corrosive poison from their mouths.

“The aja-aja will be no problem,” he bluffed, staring into Marga’s eyes. “I have two magic-users with me now, a wizard and a Phage. They’re perfectly capable of dispatching a few overgrown snakes.”

“If so, then I’ll simply have to wait longer to be reunited with my precious one,”
the Wyvern said, eyeing the flattened snake corpses around her.

Something inside Zar began to burn like a fuse at the words “precious one.”

“You knew her before, I presume,” he continued, his voice much quieter. “Before you kidnapped her, I mean, and took over her mind.”

“She was mine to take,” the Wyvern retorted through Marga’s lips. “She was always mine to take.”
The last words hissed from Marga’s mouth like a challenge. Zar’s fingers wrapped around his sword’s hilt. He wanted nothing more at this moment than a way to strike at
his enemy, but the Wyvern was far, far away.

“If you want her,” Zar said, “you’ll have to kill me.”

“Too risky,” the Wyvern replied. “You crave nothing more than to die for her. To kill you might break my grip.”

“If you don’t kill me she will never truly be yours,” Zar said. He walked to within an arm’s length of her. “As long as there’s breath in me, I will always be fighting to free
her.”

“I’m sure you mean that,” the Wyvern said. “Once you’re dead, there’s nothing to stop me from singing her back to me.”

#TuesdayTreasures Guest post by Jeremy Higley

Good Morning!

On Saturday I mentioned I am in Santee, SC. That's still true today although I'm supposed to be going on to Cherokee, NC, if not today, tomorrow. Hurricane Hermine and tire troubles put us a day behind schedule but we'll be there tomorrow at latest. Then we'll head back home.

Hope your Labor Day weekend was blessed!

Today's guest is a newcomer to our blog, brought to us by Class Act Books.

Jeremy Higley was born in California but now lives in Arizona. As of 2016, he’s a graduate student working on a master’s degree in English. He’s also an instructional aide at a local elementary school, a novelist, and a contributing editor for a nonprofit student success company called LifeBound.

Now let's see what Jeremy treasures....

If you are what you eat, I'm an apple. I've eaten an apple a day for as long as I can remember. I just love apples!

Jokes aside, my best conversation starter is to tell people about my colorblindness. It's funny to me how this simple fact always brings out the same questions in people.

Yes, I was born colorblind. I found out in kindergarten, when I couldn't properly fill out a color-by-number sheet. No, it's but real blindness but actually an extreme form of red-green colorblindness known as protanopia, or protoanomaly, that leaves me seeing only grays, yellows, and blues.

Nope, nothing else.

I've memorized the appropriate colors to most things, but I do get tripped up sometimes. I haven't tried the Enchroma glasses. These enhance color perception by separating light into its primary components of the spectrum before they reach the eye. However the test on their website says they only have a 25% chance of working for me, so I'm waiting until I have $400 just lying around.
**********

Oh wow, Jeremy, most of us never think of our eyesight and the fact we can see colors as something to treasure! Here's praying for a miracle for you!

You can find out more about Jeremy through his website, Facebook, LinkedIn and Google+

Check out his book,  The Son of Dark on Amazon, Class Act Books, Amazon UK and Smashwords.

Hope you enjoyed today's Treasures and that you'll drop by each week for Tuesday Treasures, Thursday Thoughts and Saturday Spotlight.

Until next time, take care and God Bless!

#ThursdayThoughts: Random Ramblings with Linda Nightingale

Hello and Welcome to the last Thursday Thoughts of March 2016!

Lent is over, Easter is behind us already, and this year is just moving right along.

Feb. 23rd's Tuesday Treasure guest, Linda Nightingale returns today to share some thoughts with us....

With only a brief respite working on Miami Beach for a very kind elderly millionaire, my career was in legal—a legal assistant. My job ranged from commercial real estate (working on the closing of Lenox Square in Atlanta) to residential real estate and real estate agent in South Carolina.  The last seven years, I worked at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston until I retired to write full-time.  One year, I contracted for a former boss assisting with a Federal Court case on MRSA. That was interesting and challenging!

As to my dream career, I am now writing copy for an ad agency as a Content Strategist, and I love my “job”.  I found a hoodie online that I wanted to buy that said something like Content Strategist, “miracle worker”… but the winter in Houston did not exist this year.  Hoodies not needed.
The real reason I write is because I have to.  The characters chatter in my head until I sit down at the keyboard…then they go silent, and I stare at a blank screen. My WIP is a ghost story that I’m writing with the intention of submitting it to my publisher.  Her Captain in Gray is about a woman who buys a pre-Civil War house in the South Carolina Low Country and finds herself with a roommate—the ghost of a Confederate captain.  My other 6 novels run the gamut from dark fantasy to romantic suspense and are all available on Amazon.

Thank you, Pam, for allowing me to ramble a bit on your lovely blog.  The cover is for my soon to be released Gylded Wings from The Wild Rose Press and was created by the incredible cover artist Debbie Taylor.
About Linda....
Born in South Carolina, Linda Nightingale has lived in England, Canada, Miami, Atlanta and Houston.  She’s seen a lot of this country from the windshield of a truck pulling a horse trailer, having bred, trained and showed Andalusian horses for thirteen years.

Linda has won several writing awards, including the Georgia Romance Writers Magnolia Award.   As well as an author, she is a legal assistant and a mother of two incredible sons, one in England; the other a graphic artist in Houston.  She is a member of the Houston Symphony League and enjoys events with her car club.  Two of her favorite things are her snazzy black convertible and her parlor grand piano.

She is the author of three novels published by Double Dragon Publishing, a Canadian publisher. Gemini Rising, winner of the Preditors’ and Editors 2013 Poll in Mainstream, is a controversial dark fantasy, getting good reviews.  Sinners’ Opera and Cardinal Desires are paranormal romances starring sexy vampires.  The following is a snippet of a review for Sinners’ Opera:  “Morgan and Isabeau are characters that could be placed in the same category as some of the most famous couples in romance history - Romeo and his Juliet, Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy - and their romance plays out like one of Beethoven's famous love letters.”

Visit her web site at http://www.lindanightingale.com(site designed by Simon Nightingale) for a continuing vampire story.  Catch her on Twitter at @LNightingale.  She is on Facebook, or visit her blog http://lindanightingale.wordpress.com/

Under the pen name Bianca Swan, she writes erotic romance.  The Wild Rose Press published two novellas. Double Dragon Publishing released one Bianca novel.

Linda's latest novel, Gambler's Choice is available now from Amazon in paperback and for Kindle.

Hope you enjoyed this week's Thursday Thoughts and that your return each week for Tuesday Treasures, Thursday Thoughts and Saturday Spotlight!

Until next time...take care and God Bless!

Saturday Spotlight: Jerome Brooke

Good Morning Friends,

I apologize for no Thursday Thoughts, I was too busy to think much less write. This morning I welcome Mr. Jerome Brooke, AKA Joan Barron to the spotlight......

Jerome Brooke lives in the Kingdom of Siam. He is the consort of Jira, a princess of the lost Kingdom of Nan. He has written The City of the Mirage and many other books.
Find out more by visiting his website and/or Facebook

Q&A
How long have you been writing F&SF?
I have lived in the Kingdom of Siam for ten years. Most of my fiction writing has been done after I came here.

What is your style and goal?
I used to read lots of pulp fiction. I adapt that to my own work. I write shorter books that can be read as ebooks. Some of them are collections. Like the Conan or Sherlock Holmes tales, they can be read as solo stories.

Do you have a series?
One of my series is Astarte and her Dark Empire. The books are set eons in the future. The Elder Race are sons of Sol III. They sailed to the stars and seeded many worlds with life. They fostered many civilizations. They founded an empire ruled by Astarte the Divine.

Astarte?
Astarte has lived for eons, and rules many worlds. She is not loved by her subjects. She is the Destroyer of Worlds. In my The City of the Mirage she calls the Warrior to fight at her side. She is always at war with her rivals, other members of the Elder Race.

Blurb: The City of the Mirage is ruled by the Divine Astarte. She has called the man who comes to be called the Conqueror to her service. Astarte was born on our own world. Astarte rules a vast empire of the multiverse. Her race seeded many worlds with life over the eons. The Conqueror leads her legions to victory in a war against forces led by her brother.

Is it Dark Fantasy?
Yes. I did not want to have a hero was just like the people of today, and was politically correct. I wanted people who had values and  lives that were exotic.  Astarte and her subjects are often ruled by the desire for power, and by dark passions.

What is your day job?
I am retired. I have served as City Attorney back home. I have also done rare book cataloging. I am the consort of Jira, a princess of the lost Kingdom of Nan. I have two kids.

Nan?
Nan is 1000 kilometers from Bangkok, in the remote Highlands. It was long an independent kingdom, and still has its own royal family.

What are your current projects?
I have recently started a paranormal series. The first book is The Lover of the Voodoo Priestess. I wrote the book under the name Joan Barron.
Also, The Empire of the Moon is a collection of the Histories of the Women of Darkness. The Prince of the Isles enters the circle of the Wise Women of the Goddess of the Moon. They promise him power, wealth and renown. They also call the goddess to come to his side. To her his soul is lost. Thus it was in the days of the sword.
