Good Morning from Santee, South Carolina!

We started our drive up on Tuesday and arrived Thursday afternoon to spend a long weekend with my Sweetheart's bonus children and grandchildren. Today we're watching his youngest granddaughter graduate high school. Although we don't visit these loved ones often, it is always a pleasure when we do.

Speaking of pleasures, it is my extreme pleasure to have Monique DeVere back on our blog, this time with her debut Love Inspired Romantic Suspense novel, Guarded by the Sheriff. Welcome back, Monique, please share with us the story behind this book and give us a sneak peek into it!

2024 and 2025 were huge years for me. I live my life by faith, so even during the hardest moments, I believed there was a reason for everything that was happening.

First, I was made redundant from my office manager job about two months before we discovered that my dad—who lived 165 miles away—was seriously ill. Because of the distance, he’d been able to hide just how sick he was during our regular phone calls. By the time we discovered the truth, he was already very unwell. It took another four months to finally convince him to come live with us. 

Looking back now, I truly believe my Heavenly Father had been preparing me for that season of my life.

Dad passed away in February 2025, and I took it very hard.

The following month, my critique partner sent me a link to the Harlequin Love Inspired Great Author Search 2025. While Dad had been living with us, every morning I’d sit in his room with my coffee and tell him the plans for the day. He always asked if I’d managed to get any writing done, and I had to admit I hadn’t. Caring for him had become my full-time focus between his needs and the constant stream of medical staff coming through the house.

So, when my critique partner mentioned the contest, I decided to enter it for Dad.

The problem was, I only had two weeks before the closing date. I’d spent years writing romantic comedy and category contemporary romance. I’d targeted several Harlequin lines over the years but never Love Inspired Suspense because everyone said it was one of the hardest lines to break into.

I came up with an idea titled Deadly Mother’s Day. I wrote the premise, first chapter, and synopsis, and submitted it just a few days before the deadline.

Honestly, I expected a rejection. After all, that had pretty much been my experience for the past thirty-odd years.

So, imagine my utter shock when Harlequin requested the full manuscript!

It honestly took me a while to process the fact that Harlequin…HARLEQUIN!...wanted to read my story. I wrote the full manuscript in two months and submitted it. One week later, my editor emailed asking when a good time for her to call me would be. It was a Friday, and she wanted to call on Monday if I was available.

If I was available? Of course I was available!

I ran around the house to find my husband and daughter to tell them that I thought I might finally be getting “The Call.” The call I’d dreamed about for years! I won’t lie; I hyperventilated.

And on that Monday, my editor offered me a contract.

Now I get to see my book in print with my name on the cover. Harlequin didn’t feel the original title suited the line, so they asked me to send more ideas. Thankfully, they liked Guarded by the Sheriff. I am so thrilled the book will be published in eBook, mass market paperback, large-print and…get this…audiobook! I’m so excited to hear these characters brought to life by a human narrator!

This has been an amazing journey, all thanks to Jesus, my Lord and Savior!

And that’s why this book will always be so special to me. No matter how many books I write for Harlequin in the future, this one will always hold a special place in my heart because I know Abba Father guided me every step of the way.

Now my dream of writing for Harlequin has finally come true—and with a line that is perfect for me. I get to share my faith through my stories while writing the kind of suspense I love. Looking back now, I can see God’s hand in every part of the journey.

They had just reached the corner of the house when an explosion ripped through the truck behind them. They hit the ground hard, Ethan shielding Sienna and Nathan with his body.

Sienna screamed his name.

Nathan’s petrified sobs tore at his heart.

“Are you hurt?” Ethan asked.

Sierra shook her head, still wide-eyed. “We’re…” She ran a hand over Nathan, relief whooshing her breath from her lungs. “We’re okay.”

He got up, helping Sienna to her feet with Nathan clutched in her arms. “Take him inside. I’ll call this in.”

She nodded. Without hesitation, she turned and hurried with Nathan into the house.

Ethan reached for his phone, his gaze drifting back to the inferno blazing on the drive.

Something told him this was only the beginning…

I love romcoms, and I also love suspense. We were on a family trip to Disneyland one year, and I just started thinking about what goes on behind the scenes, to make the "magic" happen. I write "quirky," so pretty fast, the concept became a dying theme park out in the middle of nowhere, where the rides are all based on the goriest of the Grimm brothers' "fairytales" - even the kiddie ones! Then Allie and Matt hit the page, and I knew it was going to be a really fun story to write!

I love that. We never know when or where inspiration will strike that's for sure! Can you give us a blurb and excerpt?

Blurb: Once upon a time in La-La-Land: When theme park princesses start vanishing, a free-spirited P.I. goes undercover and finds her prince – a cautious ex-military spy who’d rather be left alone.

Bathroom Guy shot Cassar a surprised look, then grimaced and checked his watch. Tarek stared pointedly, and Bathroom Guy said, “Sorry. Hoping to hurry this up.”

You and me both, Allie thought. To Tarek she said, “Is there something I can do for you? I have an appointment.”

He bowed. “I will be brief. I am most sorry for any distress Mr. Peerless caused you, but I believe I may be able to help.”

“What? You help me?”

Bathroom Guy frowned some more, and Allie gave up. Tarek was easier. He beamed now, pleased with himself, or with her, she wasn’t sure which. 

“Yes. It is clear that you are in need of employment.”

“I can’t argue with that. But, er, what do you need?”

“A princess. The job is yours, if you will take it.”

“Hey lady, you all right?” A man stopped his SUV in the middle of the road and jumped out. “That was quite a spill you took.” He smiled wide, picking up her mug and lid. “But I see your goodies from Candi’s place are still intact. Let me give you a ride. You’re going to freeze as wet as your clothes are.” He held out his hand. “Braydon Nightwing, but everyone calls me Blaze. I own the pizza place a few blocks down the way.” 

When she reached for his hand, her arm shook. Her teeth chattered as she tried to say her name. “Wynterrr.”

“It’s warm in my SUV. Please tell me where you’re going. I’ll get you there.” He pried her fingers from the box, helped her over to the vehicle, and opened the passenger door. Warm air rushed out of the SUV, caressing her face.

Please don’t let him be a serial killer. Slowly, she reached behind her and patted her waistband. Shit. Why didn’t I bring my weapon? Getting in a car with a stranger wasn’t smart. But the warmth emanating from the vehicle was inviting. Death by serial killer or freeze. She crawled into the SUV and huddled in front of the heater vents.

Oh Wow! Sounds like a thrilling read. How did you come up with the idea?

I wanted to write a fun, exciting Christmas Cookie book for the holidays. As I thought about it, a unique small town came to mine with quirky characters. The town of Raven's Hollow was born. Yet, when I finished the book and submitted it, I knew I wasn't done with Raven's Hollow or its people. With Spring headed our way, my imagination took off along with the characters and Raven's Hollow Spring Magic was born. An ancient Jelly Bean machine is involved along with a missing witch and time travel. What could be more fun? If you have a chance check it out too.

Good Morning from lovely Biloxi, MS!

One of my BFF's and I drove here Monday and we're staying at the beautiful Beau Rivage hotel/casino. We've had such a wonderful time enjoying each other's company. This friend lived at my house in 2010 while I bounced back and forth from Bandera and although we see each other regularly we haven't had a girl's trip in a long time so this was a wonderful opportunity. I'll share photos later but for now, please welcome Carolyn Rae Williamson back to our blog. Carolyn visited way back in 2018 so it'll be great to catch up with her again. Take it away, Carolyn.....

To Diet or Not....

My husband and I tried two types of advertised weight loss pills with no results. Others advertised probably don’t help much either. I have read six books about losing weight. Analyzing them is like what I found out in college, where professors in similar subjects had different slants on things. Today, one nutritionist may say something that contradicts another’s words. 

I earned a master’s degree in home economics and keep up with current nutrition knowledge. Reducing fat calories has sounded promising, because fats have nine calories per gram, while protein and carbohydrates only have four calories per gram. 

One study showed those in one group who ate less fat, but the same number of calories, lost more than the other group, who ate the same total of calories, but their meals had more fat. 

Authors of weight-loss plans differ on when to eat and how much exercise one needs. They all suggest some exercise, but the amount and timing recommended varies.  

Some say it’s better to eat three meals and several snacks. Another study showed a group of people who ate several smaller meals a day lost more than the other group eating the same number of calories served in three meals a day. 

According to the New York Times: “But now, a rigorous one-year study in which people followed a low-calorie diet between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. or consumed the same number of calories anytime during the day has failed to find an effect.” 

Several authors want you to eat mostly chicken, turkey, and fish. Some authors recommend cutting carbohydrates to little or none, while others suggest limiting carbohydrates to complex ones that are slow to digest. Most suggest a variety of fruits and vegetables helps keep one healthy, while Atkins limits you in the early stages to low starch vegetables, such as broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and greens such as spinach, with only apples and berries for fruits. It didn’t take long for me to get tired of those. 

Many diets emphasize including plenty of protein. Did you know that foods with some protein may not contain all the essential amino acids your body can’t make? Eggs, milk, cheese, fish, and meat provide complete protein. If you don’t eat meat, fish, and dairy, combine servings from two of the following groups in the same meal, so your body will receive all the essential amino acids. Those groups are 1: Grains, such as wheat, oats, barley, rice, 2. Nuts and Seeds, and 3. Beans, such as pinto beans, navy beans, black beans, kidney beans, etc. 

One author doesn’t allow coffee. Some authors forbid artificial sweetener. Another doesn’t allow red meat. One author includes mostly plant proteins instead of meat or dairy foods. Another wants you to stop eating at 7:00 p.m. and not eat again until 11:00 a.m. the next day.

Now, as I learned in college, you must decide what to believe. And there’s another factor. Certain programs work for some people, but not others. Each individual needs to find what works for his or her body, lifestyle, and preferences.

Since my co-author and I are developing a sequel to our cookbook, There IS Life After Lettuce, now out of print, we needed to choose which theme to follow with our new cookbook for heart patients and diabetics, who may also need to lose weight. Like most nutritionist authors, we believe it’s good to limit fat, salt, sugar, and calories as well as provide adequate, complete protein. That is the basis for our recipes. We will leave which plan you choose up to you. We aim to provide nutritious recipes for delicious foods you’ll enjoy eating. 

Our next cookbook will feature delicious main dishes with complete protein as well as recipes for fruit dishes, desserts, vegetables, soups, and snacks. 

If you are a heart patient, a diabetic, or just want to lose some weight, look for the next cookbook by Carolyn Williamson and Pepper Durcholz, who’s a diabetic with a sweet tooth.

#SaturdaySpotlight is on Kerry Blaisdell & Damning the Dead!

Good Morning Friends,

It's been a crazy week for me. Not like you haven't heard that before right? LOL! Anyway, started out last Saturday when I went to my daughter's house to be with the kids while she and my wonderful son-in-love took a "quick" trip to Disney for their birthdays (he Jan 26 her Feb 8). That "quick" flight turned into a minor disaster when the flight was cancelled in Dallas after a 6+ hour layover and they had to rent a car, drive home that night then get up and drive to FL on Sunday - UGH then, on top of that my allergies went berserk - you know the drill runny nose, itchy watery eyes, sneezing and sniffling - the whole nine yards. I'm still dealing with some sinus congestion after 3 days of meds. Threw my whole week off. Now I'm back in my little house and the kids are home safe and sound after a wonderful trip despite the rough beginning so, as they say, "all's well that ends well."

I waited, expecting any moment to see again the figure of a man—one I’d last seen vanishing into a lava pit on his way back to Hell. An oily, dark-haired man with a Mediterranean tan, wearing a white suit that emphasized his bulk—far too large to vanish completely, and so silently. 

Unless he was a figment of my imagination. That must be it—sleep deprivation combined with hypoglycemia. I gave myself a mental shake. 

Then a twig snapped and I whirled in relief, thinking Eric had returned after all.

But the forest remained empty, and a cold shudder settled low in my gut. “Who’s there? Sieg? Liam?”

Nothing. Even the birds and other critters had gone preternaturally silent.

I made a slow circle, peering at the edges of the clearing. Surely just an animal. Which might be worse—were there bears in these woods? Or wolves? 

I heard a loud rustling and spun to find Liam a few yards away. 

“Something wrong?” 

“No,” I said, relief making my reply sharper than intended. 

I moved past him into the trees, and a moment later, he followed. My own personal buffer against whatever lurked in the woods. Animal? Or demon?

I shivered again and quickened my pace.

I hope you are all faring well with this crazy Covid-19 crap. We're taking all the precautions we can and so far are all healthy - Praise God!

A writer must write.  That’s all there is to it.  Mom always says it’s a financial loss to write when I could be doing something else that leads to real money, not spurts and spits.  Well, everything I read tells me that the artist’s life is usually one of spurts and spits so I fit right in. I would prefer to have a patron who picks up my expenses, but I live the solo life and for me that requires free-lancing.  Don’t get me wrong. Free-lancing has its advantages.  Never in my lifetime would I have exchanged conversations with the great people I have had the pleasure to interview and quickly note how much I liked them.  One such interview was with Marlo Thomas.  She struck me as almost fragile, petite and seated elegantly for the interview, every curl in place, and light makeup revealing a lovely face and a warm smile. She spoke in a soft but clear feminine voice of genuine interest in my southwest Florida and said that she and Phil had visited the lovely Everglades. I was so energized on my way to my car by my own good fortune in meeting with her that my expensive smart phone slipped from my hands and cracked the glass as it hit the cement.  There is a long list of exceptional interviews, but every time I see St. Jude hospital ads with Marlo Thomas in them, she remains special – in spite of the cost of a new phone.

Baby it's C-O-L-D outside but at least the sun is shining. I am so. very. tired. of. the. rain and gloom!

Excerpt: She stepped out of the shower, toweled dry, and slipped her naked body between the sheets, satisfied that everything would get back to normal soon. The highs and lows would go away. The beauty of the swamp would give her serenity back. The challenges of her work would occupy her mind. Friends and family were scattered about. She would make a better effort to spend time with them.

A trip to Germany was now a necessity that could no longer be ignored. She decided to dump the email and the email provider without delay so she had no opportunity to change her mind. She turned the computer on for just a minute. A flash of green shocked her resolve.

“Do you still have the room key, and will you come back?” flashed on the screen.

She was lost. 

“Yes.” She responded and turned off the computer. She dared not risk looking again or thinking again. She could only act on instinct. Her instincts told her they were not, after all, finished. She quickly threw on sweats, combed back her still-damp hair with its silver threads, and packed a few things in a backpack in case they were up all night and she had to leave from the hotel for work.
The story she was prepared to reveal might take all night. She made no attempt, this time, to look any better than who she was. She’d already endured what she believed was his rejection. If he called her back, it was his heart speaking to hers. The exterior did not matter.

She drove through the fog that was coming in from the Gulf in dense clouds that hid the changing colors of the traffic lights. The key he’d handed her at check-in was like a gesture of habit, and she really had not thought much about it at the time. She found it still tucked in the side of her purse. That made it easy.

 He called her on the cell phone to be sure she was on her way. She thought he might have changed his mind. She thought she might change hers as she followed the winding road through the fog with the tower barely looming ahead. He wanted to be certain she was okay, that she was truly coming back.

 She parked in the garage and took the elevator to his floor. She slowly entered the key in the lock, lightly tapping on the door at the same time. He opened it, half dressed. He had a hanger in his hands, neatly putting away his slacks, standing just back from the door’s opening in his shirt and socks. Only the bathroom had a light. The room itself was dark except for a little glow from the full moon that challenged the fog.

Excerpt: “My blood?” Celeste squeaked.

“It’s what draws them to you.” They approached a house on vast private land. He grabbed her arm. “Wait.”

Orion released the cinch on his powerful senses. When certain of no immediate danger he said, “Let’s get inside.”

“What do you mean my blood draws them?”

He heard Celeste’s heartbeat quicken, smelled the sweat beading on her skin.

A sharp knock had the door opening to a startled elderly man. Orion quickly drew a sword.

Rushing to the man’s side Celeste cried, “No! Rafael is family to me.”

Orion sheathed his weapon, turned, and latched the door. To the gentleman he said, “Go through and check the entire place to make sure all the windows and doors are secured.”

“Please do as he asks, Rafael.”

Rafael frowned, but left to carry out the duties.

“This way,” she said and led him to a quiet room. “Please be seated.” She settled herself on a padded chair, hands fidgeting in her lap. “So tell me about these soldiers.”

This human knew more than she should. The go’ras—mind swipe—erased memories or at least that was its function. Yet it had not worked on her. “You never explained why you were aboard a pirate vessel dressed as a boy.”

“’Tis business of my own.”

Evasion and more nervousness. His long legs carried him around the room as he examined the fine wooden furniture, the elaborate paisley curtains, and fingered petals of flowers flowing from a vase on the table. One hand held a sculpted dagger with precise balance, and a specially crafted blade. He tossed it in the air catching the handle every time.

In French, he said, “I hear a French accent when you speak. Is that where you were raised?”

She rose. “Why do you expect answers and yet give none yourself?”

“It may be important.” He strode to her, stopping with only inches separating them. The dagger flipped in the air. The heat from her body seeped through the silk fabric of his shirt. Her blood seduced him in ways he’d never experienced.

Flip. Flip.

“Must you continue tossing that knife? It unnerves me,” she said.

“Your scent is unusual.” He reached up and released the comb tangled in her hair. The long curly tresses fell to delicate shoulders. He grabbed a handful and brought it to his nose. It was not human hair. A wig? Curious.

Breathlessly, she said, “What are you doing?”

He dropped the hair and with the same hand caressed her cheek. “Trying to discern what makes you so alluring.” He leaned forward and brushed the side of her neck with his nose and lips. A gut-wrenching need roared to life, encouraging him to rid their bodies of barriers and delve into the forbidden.

“I do not understand.”

Frowning, he said, “Neither do I.” He pulled back, needing the distance to think clearly.

This was a damnably odd situation. He flipped the dagger end over end. She was a direct descendant of Lord Sin, the Moon God. The blood scent was strong and it flowed with mysticism and magick.

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the fairest of them all.  Okay, the answer was never me, but a girl can dream, can't she?  I grew up with fairytales and happy ever after, so it stands to reason that when I write, I make sure my characters have their happy ending.  It may not always be what you'd expect, but it works for them. 

I write romance, no doubt about it.  I can't imagine writing anything else.  I'm a hopeless romantic, or a hopeful one.  Either way, readers get the hope.

My books delve into the paranormal romance, romantic suspense, time travel, gypsies, tramps, and thieves.  Oh sorry, I went off into my music zone for a minute.  I have fantasy, mythology, and I try to make it all relate to the everyday.

#WednesdayWordswithFriends Guest: Sloan McBride

Good Morning!

Well, fall fell here in SW LA...for now anyway we are enjoying cooler nights and milder days and I am SO happy about that! I'm more of a Summer person but I'm d-o-n-e with high 90's that feel like triple digits!

I hope you enjoyed DiAnn's visit yesterday and the treasure she shared. Today's guest is new to me and our blog so without much further ado please welcome Sloan McBride to share a few words with us....

So a couple of weeks ago I moved my daughter to Tennessee.  She is a writer, but her first love is music so she combines her writing and her music. I support both my children in absolutely everything they do and always try to find a positive, bright side to anything.  No matter how much you want them to succeed, and how proud you are of them for trying it’s hard not to miss them terribly when they are gone.  If I had my way (and all the money in the world) I’d own many acres of land where I’d build a plantation-type house (I don’t need anything too BIG), and houses for my kids. We’d have an animal preserve with a huge lake (and slide for the penguins), and full film studio (for my son).  But, alas, that’s a pipe dream.  You have to let them go out into the world and live their lives.

It is always a pleasure to bring back a previous guest. Diane Burton has shared treasures and been in our spotlight so please welcome her as she shares some thoughts with us today....

When someone says write about anything, I’m overwhelmed. So many thoughts. How do I choose? I try to narrow down the choices. What’s important to me? That’s easy. Family. Five years ago, we moved to be close to our only (at the time) two grandchildren. Last summer, my son and his family moved close to us. After twenty-some years, my whole family is close by. I can see all the grandkids (now there are 5) any time. And they can visit.

Not growing up with grandparents close by, I didn’t realize the importance. Now, as a grandparent myself, I do. I can share my experiences. I can tell them stories about their mother/father. Show them pictures of their mommy/daddy when they were little. We play games like “who’s this?” with family pictures. I can tell them about my parents (now deceased) and my grandparents. Family history can be passed on.

I know I’m blessed to have family close.

In my new release, NUMBERS NEVER LIE, a romantic suspense, Maggie loses her brother in a car accident. With her parents deceased, she’s lost her whole family. Devastating. That loss becomes an impetus for her to discover if it really was an accident.

A couple of months ago I introduced you to Kris Bock and new author friend who participated in this year's EggCerpt Exchange with me. Kris returns today to share something she treasures with us.

Mother's Day is a time to think about all the ways you treasure your mother. What do you have in common with your mother? Physical features, interests, ethics? I’m lucky to have a mother who is creative, a world traveler, and a bit of a rebel. It’s possible I inherited some or all of those traits from her.

We are also both writers. I came to writing early, with my parents’ support – I’ve been a professional working writer for twenty years. Mom wrote an occasional article, along with business documents and a PhD thesis, before turning to fiction after she retired. As a fan of mysteries, she decided to write her own. Sharon Eboch lives in Tempe, Arizona, where she enjoys reading, quilting, and occasional social activism. Murder on the West Glacier Trail was inspired by her love of cozy mysteries and her years living in Juneau, Alaska, with her family and a dog named Bandit (featured in the book). Originally from Nebraska, she has also lived in Saudi Arabia, San Francisco, and the Seattle area. She has a PhD in Human Development and the Family, which she now mostly uses to attempt to understand her two adult children.

In case you’re wondering why we have similar but different last names, Kris Bock is my pen name for writing adult romantic adventures and mysteries. I write for children under the name Chris Eboch.
