#WednesdayWordswithFriends Welcomes Sandra Byrd!

Good Morning Dear Friends,

I pray you're having a BLESSED week so far and that the blessings continue until they chase you down and run you over! Yesterday I shared some Good News/Bad News with my newletter readers. If you haven't subscribed please do so now. Meanwhile, you can check out the news HERE.

Enough about me.

Today's guest was introduced to you back in July when we spotlighted her book Heirlooms, so please welcome Sandra Byrd back as she some Unforgetable Do's and Don'ts of a Second Chance Romance.....Take it away, Sandra!

My first novel—written as a young teenager—was about two people who had fallen in love but realized they could never be together. Why not? They were both from the North Pole and, like magnets, would always repel each other. Instead of trying to “connect” again, they went their separate ways to find a “South Pole” romance partner to whom they could attach instead.

But sometimes, in life and books, a second chance romance with an old love is a good thing. Reunited, the couple finds they click in ways they never could before. So what, then, are some of the dos and don’ts to consider before trying once more?

Let’s try again if
o We both have open hearts and are willing to discuss what went wrong before.
o Both of us are willing to forgive and rekindle.
o Both of us have grown in maturity—and maybe faith—from our first time around.
o Respect and the desire to see one another grow and be fulfilled mark our interactions. We’re growing together and growing, together.
o We feel like we’re better together than apart.

We need to stay apart if
o Trust was broken in any way.
o One of us feels owed a second chance.
o The first breakup would be a relationship weapon from now on.
o One of us is trying to control the other.
o The chemistry is gone—we’re just attracted to familiarity, not each other.

GREAT advice Sandra, thank you for sharing!

#SaturdaySpotlight is on Sandra Byrd & Heirlooms!

Good Morning!

Can you believe July is half over already?!

Me either.

Alas, time marches on and we're in the middle of "Christmas in July" so please be sure and visit NN Light's Book Heaven's "Christmas in July Fete" and enter the rafflecopter giveaway for your chance to win a $75.00 Amazon gift card!

I'm off to Bayou Writers Group meeting so let me introduce to you, brand new-to-me-our-blog guest Sandra Byrd. Please give her a huge W-E-L-C-O-M-E as she gives us sneak peek into her brand new book, Heirlooms!

Answering a woman’s desperate call for help, young Navy widow Helen Devries opens her Whidbey Island home as a refuge to Choi Eunhee. As they bond over common losses and a delicate, potentially devastating secret, their friendship spans the remainder of their lives.

After losing her mother, Cassidy Quinn spent her childhood summers with her gran, Helen, at her farmhouse. Nourished by her grandmother’s love and encouragement, Cassidy discovers a passion that she hopes will bloom into a career. But after Helen passes, Cassidy learns that her home and garden have fallen into serious disrepair. Worse, a looming tax debt threatens her inheritance. Facing the loss of her legacy and in need of allies and ideas, Cassidy reaches out to Nick, her former love, despite the complicated emotions brought by having him back in her life.

Cassidy inherits not only the family home but a task, spoken with her grandmother’s final breaths: ask Grace Kim—Eunhee’s granddaughter—to help sort through the contents of the locked hope chest in the attic. As she and Grace dig into the past, they unearth their grandmothers’ long-held secret and more. Each startling revelation reshapes their understanding of their grandmothers and ultimately inspires the courage to take risks and make changes to own their lives.

Set in both modern-day and midcentury Whidbey Island, Washington, this dual-narrative story of four women—grandmothers and granddaughters—intertwines across generations to explore the secrets we keep, the love we pass down, and the heirlooms we inherit from a well-lived life.

In Heirlooms, Sandra Byrd . . .

• Tells a dual-narrative story of four women—grandmothers and granddaughters— intertwining across generations and cultures to explore the secrets we keep, the love we pass down, and the heirlooms we inherit.

• Encourages us to change views and responses to neurodiverse people in a world built for the neurotypical.

• Explores the American dream, the costs for the first generation, and the challenges of the generations that follow.

• Acknowledges that making a life is more important than making a living.

• Inspires the courage to take risks and make changes in a world built upon not disappointing others.

Excerpt:  Two long rings, three short.

Helen hesitantly moved toward the phone. It sat upon a small table next to the window overlooking the unused canning shed, set in a field sleepy with wet weeds splayed against the ground like closed eyelashes. Licorice rope phone lines stretched toward the farmhouse. Four birds convened on the line, silhouetted by the outdoor lights she’d had installed for safety.

Two long rings, three short.

One bird cocked his head and looked directly at her. Are you going to answer?

Helen reached for the receiver. “Hello?”

“Hello. Is this Mrs. Helen Devries?” a lady’s voice queried, her tone undergirded by strain and slightly nasal, as if spoken by someone who’d been crying. “The wife of Lieutenant Bob Devries?”

“Yes, this is Mrs. Helen Devries.”

“I am sorry to bother you at this hour. I am Choi Eunhee. Wife of Chief James Roy.”

Helen shuffled through her memories. “Hello, Mrs. Roy. Am I right to think that your husband served with my husband?”

“Yes. In South Korea, where I am from and where we married. My husband told me that he served many years with your husband and that if I were ever in trouble, I should contact him, as he would help me.”

Helen’s fatigue lifted and the sound of the news in the background faded. “Are you in trouble?”

“Yes.”

Helen steadied herself. “I’m honored that Chief Roy thinks so highly of my husband. But my husband can’t help you. He was killed two years ago.”

“My husband is also dead.” Silence bled into the white space of the moment, and then she continued, “They whisper that I helped kill him. That I might help kill them, too.”

#SaturdaySpotlight is on Katy Eeten @KatyEeten & A Heart Held Captive!

Good Moring and Welcome to the First Edition of Saturday Spotlight in March 2021!

We're still experiencing cold temps here in SW Louisiana. Highs are upper 60's - mid 70's but the nights are in the 40's - 50's and that's just too cold for me!

Anyway, I introduced you to today's guest in November with her book, First Class Christmas. Today, Katie shares a peek into her novel, A Heart Held Captive.

Physical therapist Cole Pearson has had his share of shallow relationships. But a year spent focusing on God opened his eyes to what he really wants in life. When he learns that ER nurse Emily Jenkins has volunteered to pay for a foster child’s therapy, he is inexplicably drawn to her generous spirit. If only he can convince her to take things beyond their casual conversations at the clinic.

Emily is a prisoner to her past mistakes and insists on paying a price God never asked her to pay. When she finally allows herself to grow closer to Cole, her faulty theology is shattered and her wounded heart begins to mend. But when tragedy strikes, Emily is sent into a tailspin. Can Cole help her grasp the freedom of God’s grace, or will she revert back to the captivity of her old ways and shut Cole out of her life for good?

Excerpt:

What am I doing? Emily shook her head as she gazed into the bathroom mirror on Friday morning. How had she gone from seven years of solitude and contentment to suddenly longing to see a man whom she had only met a month ago? Was this really what God wanted for her? She wasn’t sure, but the fact remained, she was enamored with Cole.

While a batch of cookies baked in the oven, she assembled sandwiches and put fruit, chips and bottled water in a small cooler for their lunch date. She arrived at PT Possibilities as Cole was giving a goodbye fist bump to a young girl in the entryway. The girl left, and Cole smiled at Emily. “Perfect timing. Do you mind if we eat outside?”

“That would be great. It’s a beautiful day.”

“Okay good. There’s a picnic table out back. One sec.” He turned to the receptionist at the front desk. “Shannon, can you add these notes into Megan’s file and make a copy of this form for me?”

The woman nodded as she took the papers from Cole. “Thanks. By the way, I’m clocking out for lunch now.” Then he turned toward Emily. “Alright, let’s head out.”

They walked to the back of the facility and out a rear door Emily didn’t realize existed. She spotted the picnic table, and though it wasn’t exactly picturesque next to a dumpster, it would do the trick. After placing her cooler on the table, she unloaded the food she’d packed. Out of nowhere, two hands gently slid around her waist from behind.

“I didn’t get a proper hello.” Cole’s voice was lighthearted as he leaned his chest against her back, squeezing her tight.

“Ah, I was not aware of the rules. My apologies.” Emily’s breath caught in her throat at the unexpected backwards hug. Her hands stilled as she leaned back to enjoy the moment. “I hope you like turkey sandwiches.”

Cole removed his arms and walked around to the opposite side of the picnic table. “Oh yeah, I’m not picky. Thanks for doing this, by the way. My coworkers noticed I was unusually excited for lunch today.”

Emily suppressed a giggle, then handed him a paper plate and gestured toward the food. They loaded their plates and sat to eat. “How’s your day going?”

“Pretty good. Though I gotta tell you, one of my favorite clients is no longer coming on Fridays. So, it will be kind of a let-down when I get to the end of my shift.

Emily raised an eyebrow. “One of your favorite clients? Should I be worried?”

Cole laughed. “Okay, okay, you’re my favorite. Hands down. There, I said it.”

#WednesdayWordswithFriends welcomes T.I. Lowe!

 Good Morning!

Well, we left home yesterday running from Hurricane Laura and praying everyone in her path is safe!

Today's guest has visited before with her Carolina Coast series. So far we've found the story behind the story of Driftwood Dreams and Beach Haven and read excerpts from both on Saturday Spotlight Here and Here. Today we get the scoop on book 3 Sea Glass Castle. Welcome Tonya, I love that title! Please tell us more about your book....

1. What inspired you to write Sea Glass Castle?

There is a double meaning in the title, and both meanings are what inspired this book. As you can imagine, a castle—aka life—made out of glass is considered extremely fragile, and if not enough care is taken, it will shatter. The beauty of sea glass is that it’s actually formed from broken pieces that have gone through a turbulent journey in the ocean. It’s perfectly symbolic for Sophia and Weston’s story.

2. What role does faith play in this story?

I honestly feel like my faith always plays an important part in every story I tell, whether I draw it from inspiration or struggles. I’m human and stumble a lot more than I let on. The stumble I drew inspiration from for this story is having the mind-set of trying to be everything to everyone. It’s not even feasible, and I’ve gotten lost a couple of times while trying to do it. I took that struggle and made it Sophia’s. She tries to maintain the facade of having a perfect marriage, home life, and career. Of course, fissures of truth get past her weakening facade and cause life as she knew it to shatter. She then has to brave rebuilding a new life, being mindful not to make the same mistakes again.

3. Did you face any challenges in writing this story?

Every story comes with its own challenges. The challenge with Sea Glass Castle was bringing two people together who were basically sworn enemies at the beginning of the story, making them agree to “fake” dating, and then figuring out how they stop pretending to be fake. You think you’re confused by my answer, try writing that! LOL. There was nothing smooth about their romance, but that’s the fun of the challenge!

4. What lessons or truths do you hope people take away from Sea Glass Castle?

The Bible verse for this book holds a lot of the truths I wanted to share with people. “We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9).

5. As an author, what did you particularly enjoy about writing this story?

It had to be creating the zany characters: Doc Nelson and Weston’s brother, Seth. Those two cracked me up with the shenanigans they got into. They’re both a great contrast to Weston’s serious role of being a doctor and grown man. I cannot wait for the readers to meet them. Seth would so own it as the lead hero in a book . . .

6. What was the most difficult part of writing this story?

It was devastating to put Weston through tragedies that I never want to face myself. It broke my heart to have to break his, but it had to be done for the story. It was quite rewarding to give him a second chance at not only love but also career and family.

7. Can you tell us about your inspiration for the main character in this book, Sophia Prescott? What about Dr. Weston Sawyer?

Both characters gave me the opportunity to explore backgrounds that I had not done before now in a book: a divorcée and a widower. Sophia is prissy. Weston is prim and proper. Both of which I am not. So their characters were challenging all around, but in a good way. I pushed myself (and probably my editor) with my approach at telling their story in a way that felt realistic.

8. Do you have a favorite scene? If so, explain why.

Of course I have a favorite scene, and of course it includes the Knitting Club! Those spunky hens crash Weston and Sophia’s cooking class date night. And, well, you’ll have to read how they get so carried away that Weston has to drive them home. Funny stuff!

9. Is there any other relationship beside the romance you’d like to share about?

The most endearing relationship I’ve had the pleasure to develop in a story has to be the one between Weston and Collin, Sophia’s three-year-old son. The camaraderie and the bittersweet moments they privately share left me weepy at times.

10. In what ways do you hope this story connects with contemporary Christian women?

Sophia is a contemporary Christian woman who has to face some pretty devastating trials, but she rises above them for the sake of her child. Her determination to do whatever it takes to support her child, which means humbling herself and accepting a new career path, is absolute inspiration. She shows Collin, and readers, that you can overcome obstacles through perseverance and standing firm in your faith.

Tonya “T. I.” Lowe is a native of coastal South Carolina. She attended Coastal Carolina University and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where she majored in psychology but excelled in creative writing. In 2014, Tonya independently published her first novel, Lulu’s Café, which quickly became a bestseller. Now the author of twelve published novels with hundreds of thousands of copies sold, she knows she’s just getting started and has many more stories to tell. She resides near Myrtle Beach with her family

Sea Glass Castle can be purchased at Amazon in print and on Kindle and other online and brick & mortar stores where Christian Fiction is available.

Hope you enjoyed today's post friends and that you'll stop by each week for more Wednesday Words with Friends as well as Saturday Spotlight!

#SaturdaySpotlight is on Carol James @CarolJamesAuth & Season of Hope!

Good Morning!

Well, no Dixie World Championship for us this time. Arkansas beat South Carolina so I guess the score is even...until next year (hopefully). Anyway, I'm back home in Louisiana and have a TON of things to do today so without much further ado, please welcome today's guest, Carol James. Carol has shared Treasures and Thoughts with us and has been in our Spotlight before but today we're getting a sneak peek into her brand new novel, Season of Hope.

Hope Stockton’s life is dead, frozen in a winter of guilt, deceit, and fear. When handsome young pastor, Josh Lewis, comes to serve in her church, she wonders if she can trust him with her past. Will he be able to help her answer the questions that have been buried in her heart for years? Or will his own secrets drive them apart and prevent him from helping Hope find her spring of forgiveness?

Set in small town Texas in the years during and following the Vietnam war, Season of Hope is a story of forgiveness and restoration.

Excerpt: He crossed off the last entry on the list. When he’d vowed to do this, he’d had no idea it would be so difficult. He’d called every entry in the phone book and every additional number he’d gotten from Information with no success.

He didn’t have enough money to hire a private investigator, and even if he had the funds, he may not have enough information for the detective to be successful.

As the evening sun shone through the gap between his bedroom curtains, the gold chain and pendant sparkled as if mocking his efforts. Opening the small Bible, he placed the necklace back between its pages and slowly folded the covers closed.

He was tired. Tired of war, tired of loss, tired of failure.

Father, it’s in Your hands now. I’ve done all I know to do.

Carol James is an author of inspirational fiction, in particular redemptive romance. She lives in a small town outside of Atlanta, Georgia with her husband, Jim, and a perky Jack Russell "Terrorist," Zoe.

Having always loved intriguing stories with happy endings, she was moved to begin writing to encourage others as she'd been encouraged by the works of other authors of inspirational fiction.

Her debut novel, Rescuing Faith, was an Amazon number one best seller.

Carol enjoys spending time with her husband, children, and grandchildren, traveling with friends, and serving in the production department at her church. And most days, in the late hours of the night or the wee hours of the morning, she can be found bringing her newest novel to life.

#SaturdaySpotlight is on Kimberly Miller & Forgiving Tess!

Happy Easter!

I want to Thank You for taking a few minutes out of your celebrations to support my Saturday Spotlight guest.

Kimberly has shared treasures and thought with us and today she find out a little more about her novel, Forgiving Tess.

WELCOME, Kimberly!

My second novel, Forgiving Tess, released on February 1, 2019. As the title indicates, this is a story about forgiveness, but maybe not exactly as you might initially think. Sure, Tess needs the forgiveness of friends, family, and an entire town—but the biggest offender to holding onto the past might just be Tess herself. Until she can forgive herself, moving ahead in her life might just be impossible.

Blurb:
Tess turned and ran back to the bus where several members of the team were divvying up their luggage. She hung back, waiting for a chance to grab her bag. She wasn’t likely to make friends with many of the people on the trip, which was better anyway. Tess burned a lot of bridges in the last few years, and making amends was difficult. Besides, if she didn’t make friends, there would be no problem keeping them.

“Need a hand?” a deep voice asked behind her.

Tess turned and found herself facing a broad chest. She raised her head and was stunned to find the familiar blue eyes of her childhood friend, Joshua Thorne, a man she hadn’t seen in over twelve years. What was he doing here? Tess blinked rapidly as her knees went weak. She drew a breath in an effort to find strength. Inwardly she groaned. Those distracting dimples were even sweeter now.

Forgiving Tess can be purchased at Amazon and you can find out more about Kimberly by connecting with her on Facebook and visiting her website.

Again, I pray your Easter is Blessed and Happy Friends.

Until next time, take care and God Bless.

#ThursdayThoughts with Kimberly Miller!

Good Morning!

Last month I introduced to you new to me, fellow PBG author, Kimberly Miller when she shared treasures with us. Please welcome her back as she shares some thoughts....

This Thursday, my thoughts, like so many others, are on spring. As a college professor I’m stuck under a pile of papers that need to be graded, a host of meetings I need to attend, and a spring break that has recently passed. While graduation is still a little too far away to bring any hope.

But spring. Ahh, spring. Doesn’t it promise so many gifts? New life in trees budding again, sunny days that allow you to leave that thick winter coat at home, and less time (finally) every morning chiseling that car window free from a pile of snow and ice. All beautiful, amazing things.

My first novel, Picking Daisy, begins at the edge of spring and summer. Daisy is excited for the changes the weather will bring, but she has no idea what huge changes are soon coming to her door!

If you’re looking for a sweet romance about unexpected love, Picking Daisy could be the book for you and is available in Ebook and Print!

Thanks for sharing, Kimberly! I'm a Spring, Summer & Fall person myself (mostly Summer) LOL.

Hope you enjoyed today's post friends and don't forget, Kimberly's brand new release, Forgiving Tess can be purchased at Amazon also. You can find out more about Kimberly by connecting with her on Facebook and visiting her website.

Until next time, take care and God Bless.

#TuesdayTreasures with Kimberly Miller

Good Morning from Bandera, TX!

Yep I'm in my home away from home town for a few days. Drove up Saturday and having a blast catching up with my Bandera peeps.

Today's guest is new to our blog so please welcome Kimberly Miller as she shares some treasures with us....

Welcome Kimberly!

I started writing stories when I was in junior high. A new friend introduced me to the idea that—with a little imagination—we could write about anything we wanted to and even insert ourselves into the stories as strong, fun, funny, insightful young ladies who always came out on top. We’d read these stories to one another over the phone almost on a daily basis, giggling the entire time. I’m fairly certain that during these years I was rarely without a notebook, and I was constantly on the hunt for great story ideas.

Although my friendships have grown and changed over the years I look fondly back to these times when I learned that storytelling wasn’t only important, it was as essential to me as breathing. Now my friendships often allow me to share my stories before or even immediately after publication. I treasure these wonderful people who encourage me to do what I believe God intended for me all along. And of course, I’m especially grateful to my friend Vanessa who opened up the world of storytelling for me in such a fun and exciting way.

My first novel, Picking Daisy, has already received wonderful reviews, and new friends and old offered loads of encouragement as they asked when my next book would be coming. Well, lucky for them Forgiving Tess released earlier this month! I’m excited to continue sharing stories with my friends, family, fans and readers from all over the country and have truly enjoyed getting to know other writers along the way too.

Happy reading, friends!

Wow, Kimberly how sweet. Friends are always something to treasure!

Forgiving Tess can be purchased at Amazon and you can find out more about Kimberly by connecting with her on Facebook and visiting her website.

Hope you enjoyed today's post and that you'll check back often for more Tuesday Treasures, Thursday Thoughts and Saturday Spotlight.

Until next time, take care and God Bless

What inspired you to write The Builder’s Reluctant Bride?

I wanted to write a story about the messiness of real life. Too often, following the Lord Jesus Christ is portrayed as a simple fix to our troubles. But Scripture teaches us something quite different. Turning to Jesus does not guarantee a removal of our troubles. In fact, it is more likely to increase them as we walk in opposition to the world. Following Jesus is not easy. We are commanded to do things that are impossible in our flesh, but they become possible as we depend on the Holy Spirit’s power and live in submission to God.

Can you tell us a little more about yourself and direct us to where readers can find you?

I am from the play-until-the-streetlights-turn-on and come-when-your-father-whistles generation. I’m a cool-off-in-the-sprinkler, drink-straight-from-the-hose, and fish-off-the-pier kind of girl. I’m loyal even when others are not. I’ve wrestled with brothers, played Barbie with neighbors, and stayed up too late reading just one more chapter.

I’m from BIG Sunday dinners, steaming hot tea, and Saturday morning coin-sized pancakes. I grew up with Tupperware, paper bag lunches, Yorkshire pudding, and mashed potatoes. Lots of mashed potatoes. My family is a finish-what-you-start, bargain shopping, home cooking, and respect-your-elders kind of family. I am one of four children framed in memories on a wall. I jumped off docks, endured eight-hour trips that took twelve, and sat in the middle bench seat of the family sedan. I am a wait until you enter the house before driving away kind of mom. I boil the kettle in a crisis, and I know that a job worth doing is worth doing right. I am a fixer of old things, painter of everything, cleansed and forgiven child of God. I believe that nothing matters more than the Lord Jesus Christ and who I believe He is.

#SaturdaySpotlight is on Carla Laureano and The Saturday Night Supper Club!

Good Morning Friends!

It is with extreme pleasure I welcome Tyndale author, Carla Laureano into our spotlight. Carla shared some thoughts with us last month but today we'll get a sneak peek into her novel.

Denver chef Rachel Bishop has accomplished everything she’s dreamed and some things she never dared hope, like winning a James Beard Award and heading up her own fine-dining restaurant. But when a targeted smear campaign causes her to be pushed out of the business by her partners, she vows to do whatever it takes to get her life back . . . even if that means joining forces with the man who inadvertently set the disaster in motion.

Essayist Alex Kanin never imagined his pointed editorial would go viral. Ironically, his attempt to highlight the pitfalls of online criticism has the opposite effect: it revives his own flagging career by destroying that of a perfect stranger. Plagued by guilt-fueled writer’s block, Alex vows to do whatever he can to repair the damage. He just doesn’t expect his interest in the beautiful chef to turn personal.

Alex agrees to help rebuild Rachel’s tarnished image by offering his connections and his home to host an exclusive pop-up dinner party targeted to Denver’s most influential citizens: the Saturday Night Supper Club. As they work together to make the project a success, Rachel begins to realize Alex is not the unfeeling opportunist she once thought he was, and that perhaps there’s life—and love—outside the pressure-cooker of her chosen career. But can she give up her lifelong goals without losing her identity as well?

There was definitely something going on. If they hadn’t already dragged her out of her apartment, Rachel would think they’d staged an intervention. Except Melody and Ana were the only ones who really cared about what happened to her. She might think of her kitchen staff as her family, but they were more like countrymen—a shared citizenship, outsiders among the larger mainstream community, bonded by their weird hours and neuroses and gallows humor. They were probably sad to see her go, but they wouldn’t think of her much beyond what her departure meant to them during work hours.

“You okay?” Melody nudged her. Rachel sucked it up, straightened her shoulders, and pushed away the beginnings of self-pity. “I’m fine. Just hungry.”

Their food came up next—enormous helpings of thick-cut fries piled with shredded duck, piled incongruously in red-and-white checked paper boats. They took their food and then wound their way back through the ever increasing crowd to where Ana had managed to snag one half of a table in the back corner. Melody slid in beside Ana, and Rachel squeezed into the small space between the fence and the table.

“I’ve been craving these for weeks.” Rachel took a fry from her basket and bit into it with a sigh. They were perfect—crisp on the outside with a creamy interior, at once both salty and sweet from a double bath in boiling duck fat. Not exactly the healthiest of choices, but oh, was it worth it.

“So . . .”

Ana’s tone immediately pegged Rachel’s intervention-meter. Rachel put her entire attention on her food. “So what?”

“What are you going to do now?”

Rachel put down her French fry before she could even finish it. No sense letting the conversation sour her enjoyment of such deliciousness. “Do I really have to have a plan?”

“You know I understand the need to mourn. But I also know that you’re going to go crazy if you’re not working. You need something to occupy your time.”

“I don’t know what I want to do yet,” Rachel said. “It feels like you’re telling me to start dating before the ink is even dry on the divorce papers.”

“We really need to get you a boyfriend,” Ana said.

“I’m not interested in a boyfriend.” She avoided their knowing gazes, scanning the patio behind them, and felt her muscles freeze.

She might not want a boyfriend, but that didn’t mean she was immune to the specimen of pure male beauty walking toward them. She’d had plenty of experience with Tall, Dark, and Handsome, especially in the manscaped streets of Manhattan, but the guy walking toward them could have stepped straight out of a Colorado outdoors magazine. Tall but not too tall with mussed brown hair, light eyes that looked either green or blue from this distance, and a chiseled jaw shaded with just the right amount of stubble. He wore jeans and a light canvas jacket over a T-shirt tight enough to hint at toned muscle beneath.

And he was looking right at her.

She was suddenly finding it hard to breathe, and the unaccustomed bloom of heat in her cheeks meant nothing good. “Holy . . . ,” she murmured beneath her breath.

“What?” Melody asked.

“Don’t look!” she hissed, but it was too late. Both Melody and Ana were swiveling toward the guy, who hadn’t wavered from his trajectory toward their table.

“You know, I think we need to go get drinks.” Melody rose abruptly. Too abruptly. “Do you want anything?”

“Other than to sink into the concrete? Fine. Something non-alcoholic. Surprise me.”

They were off faster than she’d ever seen them move, a few seconds before the man arrived at her table. She steeled herself against her inevitable, involuntary reaction and still felt a little tremor. Hazel. His eyes were hazel, and a dimple flirted at the corner of his uncertain smile.

Uncertain?

She composed herself and looked up at him again, waiting for the introduction. Or more likely, an inquiry about the time because his girlfriend was late. A man like that had to have a girlfriend. Or a wife.

Instead, he shoved his hands in his pockets and asked, “Rachel Bishop?”

A bucket of cold water doused the lovely glow she was feeling. “Who are you? Press? I have nothing to say.” She began to gather their meals together, until he thrust a hand out.

“Wait. I’m not press. Not really. My name is Alex Kanin.”

Kanin. She stared at him for a moment, wondering why that sounded familiar, sure that she would have remembered him if she’d met him before. No matter how busy, she wouldn’t have forgotten that face. Then it dawned on her. The article in The New Yorker. Alexander Kanin. She straightened and sent her best glare his direction, the one that made her cooks cower in apprehension. “I have nothing to say to you.”

“Please.” He seemed to be gathering himself, his expression pained. “You don’t have to say anything. Just listen.” When she still didn’t relent, he pleaded, “I’ll only take a couple of minutes. I promise.”

Rachel looked for her friends in the crowd, but they were still standing at the outdoor bar, waiting for their drinks. The crowds had piled in even thicker now, and if she gave up their table, there was no telling when they might nab another one. She clenched her jaw while she considered. “Fine.” She pulled her phone out of her pocket, set the timer, and plunked it on the table between them. “You have exactly two minutes. Go.”
