#SaturdaySpotlight is on Jamila Battle

Good Morning!

Well here we are....hosting our last Saturday Spotlight in 2016. Today's guest is not new. Jamila Battle has shared Treasures and Thoughts with us within the last couple of months and today we're getting a closer look into her book, From Abuse to Abundance....

My dad was a talented and charismatic jazz musician, who everyone loved. On the outside, my family’s life looked perfect. But what many didn’t realize is that we actually lived in a prison. The windows to our home had metal bars that were designed to keep me, my mother, brother and little sister caged in, along with our family’s deepest darkest secrets. Bars on the windows, the phones were tapped. We shared our house with rats and bats.

It wasn’t uncommon for me to be bound with duct tape and beaten with wire. I witnessed my mom get brutally beaten to a pulp and tied-up as my father smeared a dead rat over her limp body, to terrify her.

Enduring child abuse led to many other problems for me. After my abusive father fired a partially loaded gun at my head on a thankfully empty chamber, followed by his attempt to rape me, I finally called for help. I was removed from my home and was placed in one toxic foster home after another.
Although I escaped 14 years of childhood abuse, it followed me and sapped my joy and creativity.

Decades later, I realized two things
1.As a kid, I became an expert at living with abuse and addiction, hiding it, ignoring it and trying to cope with it on my own

2.As an adult, I later became a doctor and realized the importance of reaching out and discovered a great desire to help others overcome their pain of abuse and addiction to become happy, productive, healthy and drug free.

It was therapeutic to write and share my truth and the intimate bleeding story of what was going on in my head in hopes that others will better understand what they are going thru and those that they love.

My confessions have resonated with others facing similar emotional challenges and thus may give them hope and encouragement that they, too, can change their lives for the better. It is one of my deepest wishes to provide perspective for those who are suffering from trauma to help them create meaning and a new life.

Many struggle to speak their truth and paint the picture of what past memories are embed in their hearts. I want to help those bound by trauma turn their pain into promise and purpose thru confession, compassion, love and forgiveness by giving them a voice.

My determination to overcome it, the struggle with long-term effects of abuse, and finally getting my life of abundance, speaks volumes to the resilience of the human spirit to overcome tragedy. Now as a doctor, witnessing these terrible effects in our society, I have committed myself to do everything I can to lift and help repair those people.

Partly to heal myself and partly because I realized my mission, I focused my practice on the 4 pillars of health: sleep, diet and exercise, addiction and meditation.

It is my mission to not only increase functional awareness about abuse and addiction for those who suffer in silence by giving them a voice, but also raise this awareness for helping professionals, educators and parents.

#TuesdayTreasures Guest Post by Jamila Battle, MD

Good Morning Friends!

I hope you've followed Keri's blog tour so far and entered the Rafflecopter. Good luck if you have! If not, you've still got plenty of time. Meanwhile, please welcome Dr. Jamila Battle back to our blog to share treasures with us....

Why do triathlons?

When I started my journey onto Rebirth, I was 272 lbs. I would lose the weight only to regain it back plus more.

What I didn’t know was food addiction was controlling my life. I was looking for my self esteem in the fridge, which was a bad place. All I found was misery wrapped in cellophane. Comfort food felt good in the sort term but was killing me with its long-term consequences.

To get to sustainable change I had to reboot by being honest and understanding that unresolved trauma was the fuel driving the addiction. Next, I had to intentionally heal my mind, body and spirit by identifying my self-critical voice, releasing negative emotions and taking good care of myself. This included the work of trauma-focused therapies, self care, restoration of good sleep thru a sleep evaluation and more.

For the first time I saw sustainable weight loss when I started CPAP to restore my sleep quality and when I joined a triathlon group. This year I completed two races and have lost 35 lbs and kept those pounds off. It is truly work, a process and a lifestyle.  But it is worth it.

John F. Kennedy once said, we go to the Moon because it’s difficult.

What a great statement as oppose to our pop culture today that says why do anything that takes any effort whatsoever. So the reason to do a triathlon is because it is hard. Once you do something that takes you to another level, it transforms you mentally, physically and spiritually. If you deal with or do something you don’t think you can do, and you transcend it, you become a different person.

That is called Rebirth.

You learn new things and grow.

I realized during my first triathlon race that although I finished and felt quite accomplished, everyone in the race was battling their own demons and trying to become something more than they are.

It is a treasure to be surrounded by all of that positive energy.

#ThursdayThoughts with Jamila Battle, MD

Good Morning and Happy Thanksgiving!

I pray your day is blessed and whatever you do to celebrate this weekend is fun, safe and happy!

Today's guest is new to me and new to our blog.

Dr. Jamila Battle's heroic journey from debilitating childhood violence and abuse to attending some of the finest institutions in our country and becoming a renowned physician is nothing short of miraculous. Her tenacious perseverance has been marked by depression and breakdown, yet she still rose to triumph, and created a narrative to guide those who wish to take control of their own destiny.

Now that we've met Jamila, let's see what thoughts she's sharing with us today....

Did you know that Trauma creates small thinking, fear, denial, and apathy?

As you know, there are so many myths about abuse and addiction that are simply not true. From my own experiences, I have learned that even after enduring abuse and overcoming addiction, we can still experience a life of abundance.

I am Dr. Jamila Battle. I am an award-winning physician, triple board certified in sleep, addiction and family medicine. I am also a consultant and speaker, but most importantly, I am your Abuse to Abundance Authority, and I’m excited to introduce you to Reboot, Repair, Rebirth.

I have a few questions for you:
Have you been wounded by the Pain of your past?
Have you been abused physically, mentally or emotionally?
Have you experienced or overcome an addiction of any type?

OK, chances are you answered yes to at least one of those question. So now I just want to know:
Would you like to wake up and realize that you are walking and living in purpose, without being haunted by your past?

IF SO,

Reboot Repair Rebirth can help you.

Reboot Repair Rebirth teaches those who are suffering in silence how to turn their pain of abuse or addiction into the promise of abundance.

In my book from abuse to abundance, I chronicled my journey and the steps I had to take to create courage, understanding, forgiveness and self love.  You can too.

Those bound by the past, fears and pain often suffer in silence awaiting the balm of healing.
Self sabotage and fear keeps us bound to silence and isolation.

We don't change because we don't know how, or we get stuck or some of even start and quit before change can happen.

But here is a secret that I have learned and want to share with you

The greatest gift the creator has given us is the ability to change our minds, but you have to change your mind in order to change.

So as a jump-start and warm-up exercise to Reboot, Repair, Rebirth, here are three takeaways that will start you on your path to healing.

1.  Reboot your soul by becoming courageous to ask for help and ending the isolation. Remove yourself from substances, your abuser, and eliminate self hate and self harm, acquire a trusting sounding board—hint: that’s a close friend or loved one, and gain control over overwhelming symptoms.

2. Repair your heart  by identifying your critical voice—you know the voice that reminds you of the past hurts and pains. Then release your anger, sadness, and take good care of yourself. You will be in a position of understanding with the ability to forgive and love your self.

3. Create Rebirth with celebration, persistence, boundaries  and accountability so you can maintain your greatness, own and share your story and give back.

Wow...sounds like a wonderful book! Get your copy at Amazon.

Hope you enjoyed today's guest post and that you'll visit each week for Tuesday Treasures, Thursday Thoughts and Saturday Spotlight.

Until next time, take care and God Bless.
