#SaturdaySpotlight is on Carla Laureano & Under Scottish Stars!

 Good Morning,

Well, we're moving the RV closer to Louisiana today so we can get in and check on our homes but it'll be weeks before we can actually go home. All of the family's homes have damage, some extensive and the utility companies are working around the clock to get our city/cities up and running. Continued prayers appreciated, but enough of my woes.

Our guest today is no stranger to our blog. Carla Laureano shared  her Supper Club series with us. Today she returns with the third novel in her  MacDonald Family Trilogy: Under Scottish Stars. Welcome, Carla!

  1. What inspired you to write Under Scottish Stars?

Serena played a small part in the first two books in the MacDonald Family series, and even as I wrote them, I knew there was far more to her than the harried mum that she appears to be. I wrote this book a couple of short years after I was getting started in my writing career after several years away from full-time work, and I was struggling with many of the ideas that I explore in the book: finding an identity away from the needs of my children and justifying my desire for a creative life when it sometimes took me away from domestic duties.

Under Scottish Stars is the highly anticipated third novel in the MacDonald Family Trilogy. How do you expect the novel to resonate with your audience? What are you most excited for your readers to experience through this story?

I feel like any woman, but especially those with family responsibilities, can relate to the struggles that Serena faces in this book. We have the tendency to take care of everyone else’s needs before our own and to feel guilty for carving out a career, a passion, or even just a little me-time from our normal duties. I don’t think there’s a single one of us who hasn’t been shaped by our past experiences and in some way allowed the bad to determine our path more than the good. Serena feels especially relatable to me in that she is simultaneously strong and wounded.

What role does faith play in this story?

All the books in this series in some way have to do with being hurt by people we trust, whether it be a family member, a romantic partner, or the church. So subsequently, all of the books explore how those hurts impact the way we relate to God. In Serena’s case, she has to come to grips with the question of why God allowed so many painful experiences into her life when she had done everything “right.”

As an author, what did you particularly enjoy about writing this story?

Without a doubt, the interaction between Serena and Malcolm. Their relationship starts out antagonistic, changes to flirtatious, and eventually melts into a really sweet, heartwarming romance. I had so much fun any time the two of them were on the page together.

What was the most challenging part of writing this story?

Not being a single parent myself, I had to delve deep into what it would feel like if something happened to my husband and how I would deal with the idea of starting over in a new relationship. How would my kids react? Not necessarily topics I wanted to dwell on, but Serena’s uncertainty and concern for her children became very real to me. Single-parent romances where the kids’ feelings feel like an afterthought never ring true to me; to someone who has lost their partner and their children’s parent, they’re of primary importance. That concern colors the entire dating and falling-in-love experience.

Why did you choose these specific circumstances and location for Under Scottish Stars?

To be fair, it’s been five years since I wrote this book, so I don’t really remember my thought process of how I came to pair Serena with a younger man suddenly charged with taking care of his orphaned niece. I know that Malcolm went through a lot of incarnations before I figured out his character. My engineer husband was a huge inspiration for Malcolm and not just for the fact he is a martial artist/kickboxer. He also gave up a big chunk of his twenties to help raise his niece and nephew after their mother died of cancer. I’ve always admired that about him, and it was that kind of strength of character I knew Serena was going to need in a mate. (That might be because she’s an awful lot like me.) As far as the location went . . . well, who wouldn’t want to spend a little more time on the Isle of Skye?

How do you hope this book encourages single parents?

This book was a love letter to my single parent friends who work so hard to put their children’s needs first, often at the expense of their own dreams and desires. We see you struggle and admire your strength and love for your kids. Your needs are important, too!

What did you most enjoy about developing Serena and Malcom's characters? What was the most challenging part?

Serena and Malcolm are such interesting people, with colorful backgrounds and varied interests. Honestly, the hardest part of the story was coming up with the “black moment,” the thing that threatens to keep them apart. They were so well-suited and so open with each other that I didn’t want it to be a simple misunderstanding or fear of moving forward in a relationship. I knew it had to be a real, solid, insurmountable obstacle . . . which of course makes it a challenge to figure out how they’re going to overcome it! I honestly didn’t know how the book was going to end until I wrote it. I started to wonder if this was going to be my first romance without a happy ending.

What did you enjoy most about the research for this story?

There’s a lot of astronomy, art, and Greek myth in this book. I geeked out over all of it and had great fun weaving it all together. I love when I can learn new and interesting things in the course of researching characters’ interests.

What do you want your readers to take away from Under Scottish Stars? What about it will inspire or encourage their faith?

This story is about faith in the face of seemingly impossible obstacles and painful events. Both Serena and Malcolm suffer loss, upheaval, and doubt. But in the end, they realize that they were unable to see the entire picture and how God was moving behind the scenes for their best interests. The epilogue to this book, and this entire series, was so incredibly satisfying to write, because it’s the glimpse of wholeness coming out of brokenness that can be waiting on the other side of trials.

#WednesdayWordswithFriends welcomes T.I. Lowe!

 Good Morning!

Well, we left home yesterday running from Hurricane Laura and praying everyone in her path is safe!

Today's guest has visited before with her Carolina Coast series. So far we've found the story behind the story of Driftwood Dreams and Beach Haven and read excerpts from both on Saturday Spotlight Here and Here. Today we get the scoop on book 3 Sea Glass Castle. Welcome Tonya, I love that title! Please tell us more about your book....

1. What inspired you to write Sea Glass Castle?

There is a double meaning in the title, and both meanings are what inspired this book. As you can imagine, a castle—aka life—made out of glass is considered extremely fragile, and if not enough care is taken, it will shatter. The beauty of sea glass is that it’s actually formed from broken pieces that have gone through a turbulent journey in the ocean. It’s perfectly symbolic for Sophia and Weston’s story.

2. What role does faith play in this story?

I honestly feel like my faith always plays an important part in every story I tell, whether I draw it from inspiration or struggles. I’m human and stumble a lot more than I let on. The stumble I drew inspiration from for this story is having the mind-set of trying to be everything to everyone. It’s not even feasible, and I’ve gotten lost a couple of times while trying to do it. I took that struggle and made it Sophia’s. She tries to maintain the facade of having a perfect marriage, home life, and career. Of course, fissures of truth get past her weakening facade and cause life as she knew it to shatter. She then has to brave rebuilding a new life, being mindful not to make the same mistakes again.

3. Did you face any challenges in writing this story?

Every story comes with its own challenges. The challenge with Sea Glass Castle was bringing two people together who were basically sworn enemies at the beginning of the story, making them agree to “fake” dating, and then figuring out how they stop pretending to be fake. You think you’re confused by my answer, try writing that! LOL. There was nothing smooth about their romance, but that’s the fun of the challenge!

4. What lessons or truths do you hope people take away from Sea Glass Castle?

The Bible verse for this book holds a lot of the truths I wanted to share with people. “We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9).

5. As an author, what did you particularly enjoy about writing this story?

It had to be creating the zany characters: Doc Nelson and Weston’s brother, Seth. Those two cracked me up with the shenanigans they got into. They’re both a great contrast to Weston’s serious role of being a doctor and grown man. I cannot wait for the readers to meet them. Seth would so own it as the lead hero in a book . . .

6. What was the most difficult part of writing this story?

It was devastating to put Weston through tragedies that I never want to face myself. It broke my heart to have to break his, but it had to be done for the story. It was quite rewarding to give him a second chance at not only love but also career and family.

7. Can you tell us about your inspiration for the main character in this book, Sophia Prescott? What about Dr. Weston Sawyer?

Both characters gave me the opportunity to explore backgrounds that I had not done before now in a book: a divorcée and a widower. Sophia is prissy. Weston is prim and proper. Both of which I am not. So their characters were challenging all around, but in a good way. I pushed myself (and probably my editor) with my approach at telling their story in a way that felt realistic.

8. Do you have a favorite scene? If so, explain why.

Of course I have a favorite scene, and of course it includes the Knitting Club! Those spunky hens crash Weston and Sophia’s cooking class date night. And, well, you’ll have to read how they get so carried away that Weston has to drive them home. Funny stuff!

9. Is there any other relationship beside the romance you’d like to share about?

The most endearing relationship I’ve had the pleasure to develop in a story has to be the one between Weston and Collin, Sophia’s three-year-old son. The camaraderie and the bittersweet moments they privately share left me weepy at times.

10. In what ways do you hope this story connects with contemporary Christian women?

Sophia is a contemporary Christian woman who has to face some pretty devastating trials, but she rises above them for the sake of her child. Her determination to do whatever it takes to support her child, which means humbling herself and accepting a new career path, is absolute inspiration. She shows Collin, and readers, that you can overcome obstacles through perseverance and standing firm in your faith.

Tonya “T. I.” Lowe is a native of coastal South Carolina. She attended Coastal Carolina University and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where she majored in psychology but excelled in creative writing. In 2014, Tonya independently published her first novel, Lulu’s Café, which quickly became a bestseller. Now the author of twelve published novels with hundreds of thousands of copies sold, she knows she’s just getting started and has many more stories to tell. She resides near Myrtle Beach with her family

Sea Glass Castle can be purchased at Amazon in print and on Kindle and other online and brick & mortar stores where Christian Fiction is available.

Hope you enjoyed today's post friends and that you'll stop by each week for more Wednesday Words with Friends as well as Saturday Spotlight!

#SaturdaySpotlight is on Angela Couch @AngelaKCouch & Heart of a Warrior!

Good Morning!

So far we've made it nearly half-way through Hurricane season without a lot to fear but this coming week may just be the end of what little peace we had. TWO storms, Lord, really?!

Alas, the spotlight must go on....

Today's guest is no stranger to our blog although it has been a while since she has been in our spotlight and shared thoughts & treasures with us so please welcome Angela Couch back with her brand new release, Heart of a Warrior...

The Man She Fears Is Her Only Chance For Survival . . .

All Christina Astle wants is to reach Oregon before her baby is born, but the wagon train is attacked, and her husband killed, stranding her in a mountain labyrinth. Raised in the East, within civilization's embrace, survival is not a skill she's learned. Neither is evading the lone warrior dogging her trail.

Disgusted by the greed and cruelty of men like his white father, Towan has turned to the simpler existence of his mother's tribal people. He is not prepared for the fiery woman who threatens to upturn his entire life ... and his heart.

Excerpt:

Autumn 1859

Eyes clamped shut against the subsiding ache in her abdomen, Christina Astle sucked in cool mountain air. Pine saturated the breath and constricted her lungs like the corsets she’d happily given up only months earlier. Her hand stole across her extended stomach. What had she been thinking, agreeing to follow Anthony away from society, safety, and a house with four walls? What if they didn’t make it to Oregon in time? She refused to give birth with nothing but canvas overhead.

The wagon wheel dropped into another rut, and a gasp escaped her, drawing her husband’s gaze. “I’m sorry. I wish I could go slower, but we’re at least a mile behind them.” He glanced at the sun hovering above, then slipped the gold watch from his breast pocket and flipped it open. “It’s after three already.”

“I know…and I am fine.” Christina raised her chin a degree but refused to look at him and his perpetually concern-laden eyes. Anthony did everything within his power to keep her comfortable, stopping often, even when it meant trailing behind the rest of the wagon train. As long as they caught up by nightfall. Still, heat rose in her chest. They should have waited another year, or—better yet—never left Cincinnati in the first place.

The crack of a discharging rifle pierced the valley and deepened into echo. Then a scream, soft and haunting. More gun fire followed, ricocheting off the high mountain ridges.

The wagon lurched to a halt, and Christina grabbed for the seat. She stared ahead at the empty trail scarred with evidence of those who led the way. Horses. Cattle. Families with children. God, no!

The wagon jerked and rocked off the trail, reins slapping the backs of the mules.

Christina dug her fingertips into the raw wood. “What are you doing?”

“I’m taking it away from the trail. I’m not leaving you sitting in plain sight.”

“Leaving me? You can’t. We don’t know what’s going on.” Her head spun. “No, Anthony. Not with these mountains full of savages. Don’t you dare leave me here.”

The wagon tipped slightly then righted, dropped over the slope, and rolled into an aspen grove. White bark glimmered in the bright sun, and young saplings sprang back into place as the wheels passed over.

“There’s only one way to find out what’s happening. If they’re being attacked, they’ll need help.” Anthony lunged to the ground and unharnessed the mules, fastening them farther out of the way. All except the one trained to ride. Anthony left him near the wagon, heaving a saddle over his withers and forcing a heavy bit into his mouth.

Christina remained paralyzed on the seat. “Anthony…no. Don’t go.”

He said nothing as he loaded his revolver and strapped it to his thigh. With the Winchester tucked under his arm, he swung onto the back of the animal and twisted the reins through his fingers. “You’ll be safe here. Most likely it’s nothing.” He looked away, giving the mule an angry kick. The animal balked but lurched to a trot toward the trail.

“Anthony!”

He rotated in the saddle enough to meet her gaze and yanked back on the bit. His brown eyes studied her face, and his chest released a sigh. “Chris, I have to go. You know where the other rifle is, and the shells are under the seat if you have any need of them. I’ll be back soon.”

Christina sagged against the back of the wagon seat. The edge bit her spine. Hooves scraped the loose rock of mountain trail and faded with the distant gun fire.

To keep from freezing in the Great White North, Angela K Couch cuddles under quilts with her laptop. Winning short story contests, being a semi-finalist in ACFW’s Genesis Contest, and a finalist in the International Digital Awards also helped warm her up. As a passionate believer in Christ, her faith permeates the stories she tells. Her martial arts training, experience with horses, and appreciation for good romance sneak in there, as well. When not writing, she stays fit (and warm) by chasing after four munchkins. www.angelakcouch@hotmil.com

THANKS for sharing in our spotlight, Angela. We wish you the best of luck and God's blessings with your new release!

#WednesdayWordswithFriends welcomes D. V. Stone!

 Good Morning,

Well, release day for My Heart Weeps has come and gone. I'm excited to see where this book goes and looking forward to fulfilling the book tour and giving out prizes. I'm also trying to set up a few personal appearances in Utopia, TX. I'll keep you posted on that but for now, let's please welcome D. V. Stone back to share some words with us!

It’s all in the delivery.

People love stories. Whether spoken or written for thousands of years, stories have been passed down. Sometimes they’re fun, sometimes educational, but it’s all in the delivery. Below is one of my favorite scenes from Rock House Grill. How much less of an impact would it have if John just walked in and lectured Aden. “Buck up, man. Life is hard. Get it together.” Not so much, right?

John’s words are valid. Right to the point of the matter. But have you ever had everything planned out for your life? You were going to go to school and get a degree in a field you loved, but no one was hiring in that field. Maybe find the partner of your dreams and live happily ever after, until the divorce. You were going to raise your kids to be amazing people, but they didn’t turn out how you expected. The bank account you were building for retirement ended up going toward medical bills. Would those words help or hurt you,

Don’t get depressed yet. I’m an author whose main ARC or Trope, is hope. A bit of personal history. I’ve owned and lost businesses. Heath issues are real. I’ve been divorced. Laid off from long term jobs. Money? Fuhgeddaboudit! (I can use that expression, I’m from NJ.)

So, when I asked about my favorite scene in Rock House Grill, this one immediately comes to mind. Here’s the setup. Circumstances in Aden House, the main character’s life are a contributing factor leading to a terrible car accident. He is in a rehabilitation center with damaged legs. In the midst of an anger/pity party, a very smart man comes into his room who may or not be loosely based on someone I know.

“Do you need anything?” John, the rehab aide, popped his head in the door. “Can you get your legs on the bed?”

“I’ll be fine.”

The man flinched at his sharpness. Aden took a deep breath. “Sorry, thank you.”

“I know it’s frustrating.” John came in, picked up the grabber, and leaned against the wall. “It might help to talk to someone.”

“I’ve already talked.” Aden grabbed one leg, then the other, lifting them onto the bed. “See, it’s all good.”

The other man didn’t back off, though. “So, you’ve talked to someone. What did they say?”

Aden leaned back, put his arms behind the pillow, and stared at the ceiling tiles. “I would experience anger, frustration, insecurity—blah, blah, blah.”

“And what were you experiencing when I heard you throwing things and stuck my head in?”

Aden closed his eyes. “All of it.”

When he opened his eyes, John stood at his bedside. “You’re still the man you were. It’s a rough patch. You’ve hit rough patches before?”

“Not really.”

“Welcome to the other ninety percent of humanity.” The aide stooped down, so he and Aden were on eye level. Laugh lines and slight graying at the temples were the only indications he was older than Aden. “Circumstances change us. We can curse them and let them control us. Or, we allow whatever happens to make us better.”

“I get it.”

“No, I don’t think you do.” John paused a moment, grabbed a chair, and straddled it. “I have this friend. He’s a runner.”

Aden pulled himself up, leaned against the headboard, and snorted. “I’m getting a bedtime story?”

“Yeah.” John laughed. “The guy wants to be in the Olympics. Every day he runs and practices. Every day he gets home, and he hurts all over, especially his feet. Blisters like I’ve never seen. They bleed. But after a while, blisters go away, bleeding stops, and calluses develop.”

“You’re saying I should develop calluses?”

“Wait, calluses are not the point of the story. The guy makes the team. Heads to Atlanta.”

“Did he win?” Aden couldn’t help being caught up in the story. “Have I heard of him?”

“He got sick.” John leaned his arms on the back of the chair. “Pneumonia, the day the meets started.”

“Then all his work was for nothing.” Well, that wasn’t helpful. Shouldn’t this be a story about a winner? “Just like me.”

The other man shook his head. “I didn’t say The End.”

“What happened?”

“He went to the hospital and nearly died. But there was this nurse.” John’s eyes went distant. “She was beautiful and determined her patient would make it.”

“Did he?”

“Yup. They fell in love, got married, and had a couple of kids.” John pushed the chair back and stood up. “Not the life he’d planned. He regretted not achieving what he’d worked so hard for, but once he adjusted, his life turned out great.”

Aden developed a sneaking suspicion in his gut as the aide headed for the door. “What does this guy do now?”

“He gets great satisfaction in helping injured people get on with their lives.” John closed the door behind him.

Often we are in a hurry. We have our own problems. But when someone is in pain, could we not take a moment and tell them a story to encourage and give them hope?

Thank you for taking the time for me today, and I hope John and Aden’s bedtime story helps you. I’d love to hear about the storyteller in your life.

#SaturdaySpotlight is on My Heart Weeps!

Well Friends, release day is right around the corner and if you're one of my newsletter subscribers (or a very observant blog follower) you'll know that My Heart Weeps blog tour has already begun!

With that in mind, I wanted to spotlight the book for you today....

After thirty years married to the man of her dreams, Melena Rhyker is devastated by her husband's death. Relief comes in the form of an artist's retreat at the Crossed Penn ranch in Utopia, TX. She rediscovers a forgotten dream as her artistic talent flourishes into that of a gallery-worthy artist. Will she have the courage to follow the path she was destined to travel?

Garrett Saunders has been on the run most of his life. Abused and abandoned as a child, he escapes the clutches of a past filled with pain and shame, and hides from his calling as a Native American healer. His years as a CIA agent aid in overcoming his childhood and honing his talent and skill as a fine art photographer.

Follow their journey as two people who come from totally different backgrounds, but share gifts of gigantic proportions, find meaning and purpose in the Texas Hill Country.

Excerpt: Melena parked her truck, pocketed her keys and went on her very first hayride. She admired how Bill Penn wove stories around the history of the area in with feeding the longhorns. Afterward, they travelled to a nearby state natural area where the guests wandered down to a creek and skipped rocks. Melena sat on a small boulder and drew in the scent of fresh, crisp air, earth and flowers.

Sounds magnified in the pristine environment as daylight waned and dusk edged in, leeching color from the sky. The trickling of the stream as it moved across its bed. Plop, plop of stones hitting the water. A quiet laugh. The click of a camera as Garrett wove through the guests taking pictures. A bird trilled in the distance. Doves cooed. Frogs began their evening song accentuated by the occasional hoot of an owl. A hush fell over the entourage and stillness ensued.

Garrett touched her arm and pointed to a thicket across the way. Melena gasped as a doe and fawn stepped out and drank. Once the pair moved on, the group loaded back onto the hay wagon and returned to the ranch. Relaxed and happy, they congregated around the campfire area while Garrett and Bill Penn stacked wood. Soon, a fire lit up the night sky. Crickets and chickadees kept cadence with the country music provided by an outdoor stereo.

Since I LOVE the Texas Hill Country so much, I wanted you to get a taste of it. You won't find this excerpt anywhere else on the tour!

#WednesdayWordswithFriends welcomes April Jones @akejones

Good Morning!

Well it's going to be a busy, busy couple of months. My Heart Weeps blog tour started yesterday and will continue through Sept. 30th. I'm giving away prizes to 6 lucky people (1 per person) who follow the tour and comment on the blog posts. Yesterday I was on Gail Pallotta's blog. Tomorrow I'll be on Liz Flaherty's. Each day, I will update the URL on THIS PAGE to point to the actual post instead of the general blogs I visit, so even if you jump in and start following late, you can still catch up and enter the giveaway!

I hope you'll follow and have fun learning more about Melena's journey, but enough about us!

Last month I introduced you to a brand new-to-me author. April Jones returns today to share some words of wisdom with us. Take it away, April.....

2020 has been a year that none of us could imagine in some many ways. Before I’ve had a chance to process the latest event, it seems three more have popped up. I work from home usually, but now that everyone is home with me, it seems that there is one thing that we all need (other than a break for our devices) and that is kindness. I’m not talking about the, “No, you go first,” in the grocery store line (though that is also an awesome way to show kindness). I mean self kindness.

The kind that pipes in when you’ve reached the end of a crazy day. That little voice that says, “it’s okay, I’ll try again tomorrow.”

Because the truth is that none of us have ever had a year like this one, and the punches seem to keep coming. So for today, even if it’s only for an hour, I hope that you will pat yourself on the back for trying no matter how flawed you feel. Take an extra breath before you respond to something that’s annoyed you. Spend a few minutes on your front porch looking at the trees. Write yourself a post-it with a quote that makes you smile and stick it to your bathroom mirror.

Being human can be a beautifully exhausting thing, so be extra kind with yourself today dear friends.

A Tennessee native, April currently lives in Michigan with her husband and three children. You can find her poems and short stories published in various literary magazines across the internet and in print. You can also check out her debut novel, The Curse Breaker. What wonderful advice, April and you are SO right. Kindness to others and ourselves is imperative, especially in these unprecedented times. Thanks for sharing!

Remember friends, you can enter into my monthly gift card giveaway simply by leaving a comment for April, Include your email address, please. Not everyone of you are in my contacts list and I need to be able to reach you!

#SaturdaySpotlight is on Theresa Hall @TheresaLynnHall & Accidental Target!

 Good Morning Friends,

Life is in a whirlwind as usual. I'm gearing up for the release of My Heart Weeps on 8/18. The blog tour begins next week. You can find all of the dates, stops and prizes up for grabs HERE.

A new release is always exciting and the same goes for our guest today. Fellow PBG author, Theresa Lynn Hall has shared thoughts and treasures and has been in our spotlight before, but today she gives us a peek into her brand new Love Inspired Suspense novel, Accidental Target. Congratulations, Theresa and welcome!

On an icy road in the dead of night what she sees might get her killed.

Allison Moore can’t deny what she sees—a lifeless hand sticking out of a tarp in the back of a crashed pickup truck. Seconds later, she’s on the run with a murderer on her heels. Nowhere is safe and no one can be trusted…except police sergeant Jackson Archer. But with someone set on silencing her, can Jackson keep his promise of protection?

Excerpt: “These guys won’t stop till you’re dead.”

He regretted telling her but there was no denying the facts. Facts he had to keep to himself. The dead woman she’d seen was a DEA agent, and the man in the truck was a cartel member, a cold-blooded killer. Now that Allison could ID him, she had a hit on her.

“I won’t let anything happen to you, Allison. I promise.”

“Jackson, I’m terrified.”

Before he could reply, headlights closed in on them. An oncoming vehicle on their side of the highway. Jackson veered onto a side road and watched the car make a U-turn.

“Get down!”

He floored the accelerator but the vehicle followed them. A gunshot hit the car. Allison screamed.

He had to get her away. But this road led to a dead end—in more ways than one.

“Can you shoot?”

“No.” Her eyes widened with fear.

“Tomorrow I’ll show you how. For now, you’re getting the crash course.”

“What if we don’t make it till tomorrow?”

#WednesdayWordswithFriends welcomes LoRee Peery @LoreePeery

Good Morning Friends and Welcome to the first Wednesday in August 2020!

Life's been a little crazy since I returned from Troy, AL. My dad had to have surgery and is recovering from a blister on his foot so I've been driving back and forth to his house since Friday. Everything is looking good and he's feeling better every day but your prayers are coveted and appreciated!

Our guest today is no stranger to our blog. She has shared treasures and thoughts with us, been in our spotlight and been a previous Wednesday Words with Friends guest, but before we turn the blog over to LoRee I'd like to announce July's winner of an Amazon gift card.....

Sarah Taylor!

Congratulations, Sarah....Enjoy your gift card and Thank You for supporting our guests.

Now, take it away LoRee.....

I’ve always been captivated by old barns. They catch my eye any time I’m driving through the country, the same as windmills. Rarely are they next to one another any longer. Years ago, my brother lived on an acreage that he cleaned up and flipped. The first time I drove on the place, I fell in love with the barn. I’d never been in one that could be entered on different levels. The door that faced the house opened into the loft where hay was stored. A trapdoor and ladder led to the lower level, entered from the corral, where the animals were kept.

Bingo, an old dream came to mind. One I had years before I started writing. In the dream, I walked up the stairs of an old farm house and opened a door. On the other side of the door was a farmstead of the late 1800s.

Now what did I know about that time in history other than the westerns I’d read and watched? I’d never read a time travel other than The Time Machine. Of course I’d seen the movie Back to the Future. I bought Diana Gabaldon’s tome, Outlander (and loved it except for the violence). But I was intrigued. So I started praying about a time travel story where the heroine falls through a barn trapdoor and wakes up to the cowboy of her dreams.  Since my brother’s acreage was in Washington County, Nebraska, that’s where I set the story. The heroine Amanda is an event planner who lives in Omaha.

I’m excited for readers to experience a take-away escape while reading my story, one of faith and hope. Time travel is a popular genre that crosses generations of readers. This year of 2020 has put us Americans, and the world, through troubled times. There’s nothing good on the news due to the virus and politics. Beta readers and early reviewers have mentioned Cowboy Just in Time is a different kind of story, thus entertaining.

Faith always plays into my stories because my belief in God is what my life is all about. Amanda is strong in her beliefs and attends a Bible-teaching church in twenty-first century Omaha. Gavin saw God through nature but had next to no Bible teaching. Trust is a big aspect of faith. The bottom line, how could their love be strong enough to span the ages? After all, Mandy simply disappeared into thin air a couple times. But nothing is impossible with God.

My challenge for this story came while writing the historical aspect. I really didn’t have trouble identifying with the time, probably because I grew up on an outdated homesteaded farm that didn’t have plumbing until the mid-1950s. Historical references should be accurate because readers are savvy, so I may have gone a little overboard on cowboy lingo. But I also needed to research telephones in the country, the first “talkies,” and Chicago of that day.

I hope this story connects with contemporary Christian women. Readers seek to find hope from a messy world, and time travel is a genre for the curious, no matter our age. Lovers of time travel, especially romantics from late teens to mature adults who like clean happily-ever-after stories, should have the satisfaction that God is not restricted by human ideas, or our views of time.

Blurb:

When event planner Amanda Totten falls through a barn trapdoor and finds herself in the arms of an 1890’s cowboy, she scrambles to find a way back to the future. She has a life and obligations—her fledgling business and her mother’s financial needs. But the less stressful lifestyle, and her deepening love for Gavin Medley, is calling to her heart and she is torn between past and future.

Has God given her a chance at love?

Gavin Medley has been working for years to regain his family homestead. As ranch foreman, he has nothing but a dream of a place and family of his own. But his love for Amanda is making him think that having his own ranch isn’t as important as having someone to love for the rest of his life.

Amanda returns to the future, and Gavin is shattered. He tries to go forward in time, but fails. Believing it's God’s will, Gavin resigns himself to living without the love of his life.

But love transcends time, and Amanda and Gavin need each other. Can Amanda return to her cowboy?

Thank you, Pam, for hosting me today.

You're very welcome, LoRee! It is a pleasure to have you back. I LOVE old barns too so your post really rang a bell with me as I'm sure it does with more of us here. Good luck and God's blessings with Cowboy Just in Time!

#SaturdaySpotlight is on Carol James @CarolJamesAuth & Season of Hope!

Good Morning!

Well, no Dixie World Championship for us this time. Arkansas beat South Carolina so I guess the score is even...until next year (hopefully). Anyway, I'm back home in Louisiana and have a TON of things to do today so without much further ado, please welcome today's guest, Carol James. Carol has shared Treasures and Thoughts with us and has been in our Spotlight before but today we're getting a sneak peek into her brand new novel, Season of Hope

Hope Stockton’s life is dead, frozen in a winter of guilt, deceit, and fear. When handsome young pastor, Josh Lewis, comes to serve in her church, she wonders if she can trust him with her past. Will he be able to help her answer the questions that have been buried in her heart for years? Or will his own secrets drive them apart and prevent him from helping Hope find her spring of forgiveness?

Set in small town Texas in the years during and following the Vietnam war, Season of Hope is a story of forgiveness and restoration.

Excerpt: He crossed off the last entry on the list. When he’d vowed to do this, he’d had no idea it would be so difficult. He’d called every entry in the phone book and every additional number he’d gotten from Information with no success.

He didn’t have enough money to hire a private investigator, and even if he had the funds, he may not have enough information for the detective to be successful.

As the evening sun shone through the gap between his bedroom curtains, the gold chain and pendant sparkled as if mocking his efforts. Opening the small Bible, he placed the necklace back between its pages and slowly folded the covers closed.

He was tired. Tired of war, tired of loss, tired of failure.

Father, it’s in Your hands now. I’ve done all I know to do.

Carol James is an author of inspirational fiction, in particular redemptive romance. She lives in a small town outside of Atlanta, Georgia with her husband, Jim, and a perky Jack Russell "Terrorist," Zoe.

Having always loved intriguing stories with happy endings, she was moved to begin writing to encourage others as she'd been encouraged by the works of other authors of inspirational fiction.

Her debut novel, Rescuing Faith, was an Amazon number one best seller.

Carol enjoys spending time with her husband, children, and grandchildren, traveling with friends, and serving in the production department at her church. And most days, in the late hours of the night or the wee hours of the morning, she can be found bringing her newest novel to life.
