#SaturdaySpotlight is on Jo Richardson & Blind Spot!

Good Morning,

Returned from the lake yesterday afternoon. Didn't catch a whole bunch of fish, but enjoyed some lovely weather. It's another beautiful morning here in SWLA, cool and clear. I hope all the mothers out there have a wonderful, blessed Mothers Day tomorrow!

Today's guest is brand new to our blog so please welcome Jo Richardson to the spotlight with her book, Blind Spot  Paranormal Romance / Psychic / Mystery that's "steamy, but not erotica." ...

Sydney Fallon has spent her entire life seeing things before they happen.

Tucker Chase is no exception.

He’s not looking for any new friends when he rolls into town.
He's not looking for anything but a way to escape his past.

But how do you stay out of someone's life when you see it flashing before your eyes on a daily basis?

EXCERPT:

I can’t help but let down my guard for a minute as I watch him. He looks like he’s pondering something. I want to peek around at the expression on his face to see if it reflects what I’m feeling. Then I remember why he’s here.

Probably wondering how quickly he can get down the river and over to New Orleans.

There are plenty of lowlifes who use the winding rivers by Madisonville and the surrounding towns as a convenient waterway escape after conducting who knows what kinds of illegal business.

I step closer and lift the piece of driftwood over my head, ready to knock him out if I have to.

When I hit a creaky board, I freeze.

The man spins around.

He takes one look at me and his brow knits together into a scowl. Like he’s angry with me for interrupting him. And his plans for ransacking Ian’s place.

"What the hell?" he mutters.

I decide I better not waste any more time thinking.

I swing the wood down at his head, but he catches it mid-strike. He looks like he’s about to laugh except for the fact that he’s so irritated.

I yank at my weapon, trying to get it out of his grasp so I can take another swipe at him, but he holds on tightly.

Then the silence between us is broken.

"Can I help you?" he growls. "I mean, you know, other than giving you a head to swing at?"

"Can you help me?" I pull again, to no avail. "You're the one on private property!"

"Yeah, I know. Mine."

"Yours?” HA! “Liar! This place happens to belong to a very good friend of mine." I’m still tugging as hard as I can at the piece of wood. And he’s still scowling at me.

"A good friend of yours, huh?"

Why. Won’t. He. Let. Go!

"Yes, Ian Hedder, as a matter of..." I pull again. "...fact, and I've already called the police, by the way."

"Good," he tells me. Then he lets go of the wood.

As he lets go, I’m giving it my all, and suddenly, I’m flying backwards off the dock, into the chilly, muddy river's water with a scream.

The water is freezing.

I come up for air.

“Holy shit!”

#SaturdaySpotlight is on Deirdra Eden & The Watcher's Series

Good Morning and Welcome!

Today's guest is new to me and our blog so please give it up for Dierdra Eden....

The Watchers Series has been described as Lord of The Rings meets Supernatural. The Watchers are supernatural beings in human form whose duty it is to protect and guard mankind from the armies of darkness. Unfortunately, some of these Watchers go bad.

Deirdra Eden's, The Watcher's Series, is written in a traditional fairytale style with a young girl's discovery of incredible, but dangerous powers within herself, a cast of humorous side-kicks, a quest for greater self-discovery and purpose, and villains of epic proportions. Great for readers ages ten and up.

The main themes are Fighting for Your Dreams, Always Having Hope, and Spreading Light.

#WednesdayWordswithFriends welcomes D. V. Stone!

 Good Morning,

Well, release day for My Heart Weeps has come and gone. I'm excited to see where this book goes and looking forward to fulfilling the book tour and giving out prizes. I'm also trying to set up a few personal appearances in Utopia, TX. I'll keep you posted on that but for now, let's please welcome D. V. Stone back to share some words with us!

It’s all in the delivery.

People love stories. Whether spoken or written for thousands of years, stories have been passed down. Sometimes they’re fun, sometimes educational, but it’s all in the delivery. Below is one of my favorite scenes from Rock House Grill. How much less of an impact would it have if John just walked in and lectured Aden. “Buck up, man. Life is hard. Get it together.” Not so much, right?

John’s words are valid. Right to the point of the matter. But have you ever had everything planned out for your life? You were going to go to school and get a degree in a field you loved, but no one was hiring in that field. Maybe find the partner of your dreams and live happily ever after, until the divorce. You were going to raise your kids to be amazing people, but they didn’t turn out how you expected. The bank account you were building for retirement ended up going toward medical bills. Would those words help or hurt you,

Don’t get depressed yet. I’m an author whose main ARC or Trope, is hope. A bit of personal history. I’ve owned and lost businesses. Heath issues are real. I’ve been divorced. Laid off from long term jobs. Money? Fuhgeddaboudit! (I can use that expression, I’m from NJ.)

So, when I asked about my favorite scene in Rock House Grill, this one immediately comes to mind. Here’s the setup. Circumstances in Aden House, the main character’s life are a contributing factor leading to a terrible car accident. He is in a rehabilitation center with damaged legs. In the midst of an anger/pity party, a very smart man comes into his room who may or not be loosely based on someone I know.

“Do you need anything?” John, the rehab aide, popped his head in the door. “Can you get your legs on the bed?”

“I’ll be fine.”

The man flinched at his sharpness. Aden took a deep breath. “Sorry, thank you.”

“I know it’s frustrating.” John came in, picked up the grabber, and leaned against the wall. “It might help to talk to someone.”

“I’ve already talked.” Aden grabbed one leg, then the other, lifting them onto the bed. “See, it’s all good.”

The other man didn’t back off, though. “So, you’ve talked to someone. What did they say?”

Aden leaned back, put his arms behind the pillow, and stared at the ceiling tiles. “I would experience anger, frustration, insecurity—blah, blah, blah.”

“And what were you experiencing when I heard you throwing things and stuck my head in?”

Aden closed his eyes. “All of it.”

When he opened his eyes, John stood at his bedside. “You’re still the man you were. It’s a rough patch. You’ve hit rough patches before?”

“Not really.”

“Welcome to the other ninety percent of humanity.” The aide stooped down, so he and Aden were on eye level. Laugh lines and slight graying at the temples were the only indications he was older than Aden. “Circumstances change us. We can curse them and let them control us. Or, we allow whatever happens to make us better.”

“I get it.”

“No, I don’t think you do.” John paused a moment, grabbed a chair, and straddled it. “I have this friend. He’s a runner.”

Aden pulled himself up, leaned against the headboard, and snorted. “I’m getting a bedtime story?”

“Yeah.” John laughed. “The guy wants to be in the Olympics. Every day he runs and practices. Every day he gets home, and he hurts all over, especially his feet. Blisters like I’ve never seen. They bleed. But after a while, blisters go away, bleeding stops, and calluses develop.”

“You’re saying I should develop calluses?”

“Wait, calluses are not the point of the story. The guy makes the team. Heads to Atlanta.”

“Did he win?” Aden couldn’t help being caught up in the story. “Have I heard of him?”

“He got sick.” John leaned his arms on the back of the chair. “Pneumonia, the day the meets started.”

“Then all his work was for nothing.” Well, that wasn’t helpful. Shouldn’t this be a story about a winner? “Just like me.”

The other man shook his head. “I didn’t say The End.”

“What happened?”

“He went to the hospital and nearly died. But there was this nurse.” John’s eyes went distant. “She was beautiful and determined her patient would make it.”

“Did he?”

“Yup. They fell in love, got married, and had a couple of kids.” John pushed the chair back and stood up. “Not the life he’d planned. He regretted not achieving what he’d worked so hard for, but once he adjusted, his life turned out great.”

Aden developed a sneaking suspicion in his gut as the aide headed for the door. “What does this guy do now?”

“He gets great satisfaction in helping injured people get on with their lives.” John closed the door behind him.

Often we are in a hurry. We have our own problems. But when someone is in pain, could we not take a moment and tell them a story to encourage and give them hope?

Thank you for taking the time for me today, and I hope John and Aden’s bedtime story helps you. I’d love to hear about the storyteller in your life.

Wow, Donna what a great scene and I love that your "trope" is HOPE...it's what so many of us wish to share! Good luck and God's blessings with your books.

#WednesdayWordswithFriends welcomes April Jones @akejones

Good Morning!

Well it's going to be a busy, busy couple of months. My Heart Weeps blog tour started yesterday and will continue through Sept. 30th. I'm giving away prizes to 6 lucky people (1 per person) who follow the tour and comment on the blog posts. Yesterday I was on Gail Pallotta's blog. Tomorrow I'll be on Liz Flaherty's. Each day, I will update the URL on THIS PAGE to point to the actual post instead of the general blogs I visit, so even if you jump in and start following late, you can still catch up and enter the giveaway!

I hope you'll follow and have fun learning more about Melena's journey, but enough about us!

Last month I introduced you to a brand new-to-me author. April Jones returns today to share some words of wisdom with us. Take it away, April.....

2020 has been a year that none of us could imagine in some many ways. Before I’ve had a chance to process the latest event, it seems three more have popped up. I work from home usually, but now that everyone is home with me, it seems that there is one thing that we all need (other than a break for our devices) and that is kindness. I’m not talking about the, “No, you go first,” in the grocery store line (though that is also an awesome way to show kindness). I mean self kindness.

The kind that pipes in when you’ve reached the end of a crazy day. That little voice that says, “it’s okay, I’ll try again tomorrow.”

Because the truth is that none of us have ever had a year like this one, and the punches seem to keep coming. So for today, even if it’s only for an hour, I hope that you will pat yourself on the back for trying no matter how flawed you feel. Take an extra breath before you respond to something that’s annoyed you. Spend a few minutes on your front porch looking at the trees. Write yourself a post-it with a quote that makes you smile and stick it to your bathroom mirror.

Being human can be a beautifully exhausting thing, so be extra kind with yourself today dear friends.

A Tennessee native, April currently lives in Michigan with her husband and three children. So nice to meet you, April! Now tells us more about your book....

Eris's sister is missing, and Magic is definitely to blame! Eris knows only Magic can bring her back, but even as a Light Magic born, is she strong enough to save her sister?

Knox is cursed to spend his days as a corpse and his nights trying to find the prophesized girl who can break the curse. If he can't find her by his 20th birthday, he'll stay dead forever.

Eris and Knox will discover there are scarier things in their path other than curses and half-truths. If the Queen of the Underworld has her way, everything and everyone will die. The only thing standing in her way is the curse breaker, and Eris will have to choose between saving herself or everyone she loves.

Excerpt: The Queen paced in front of her blood-red throne. After so many years, she was finally going to meet the thief who had stolen her amulet. And when she did, she was going to slowly sever every one of their limbs, one by one, before feeding their soul to Madame. The thought made her smile a wicked smile. That would teach them to steal from the Queen of the Underworld. Stupid humans were always trying to prolong their lives in the most feeble ways. Tonics, magic, deals. Death was something that could never be avoided entirely, but they didn’t seem to think that universal rule applied to any of them.
Three more months and her amulet would call to her like it always did when she could get free of this place, and then she would have her revenge. Whoever they were, they had been granted twenty years that did not belong to them, and she would make sure they paid for that stolen time. That was part of her job, after all, not that she was complaining.

“I apologize for being late, your Majesty.” Madame hurried in, a little out of breath.

The Queen turned and stared at a slightly disheveled Madame. Normally her long hair was braided and wrapped elaborately around her head, causing her to look like a long-lost ancient queen from the human world.

“We can discuss that in a moment. I called you here because I have a proposition for you.”

“I am but your humble servant, your Majesty.” Madame feigned humility they both knew she did not possess.

The Queen rolled her eyes and continued. “If you can find the insect that stole my amulet before three months are up, I will give you a special treat.”

“I will find the human. I will make it suffer.” Madame smiled.

“No. You will not touch a hair on its head. Bring it to me, and I will deal with it.” Madame looked disappointed but nodded.

The body of a girl suddenly appeared in the air in front of them, along with one of her servants. Madame examined the girl for a moment, but then seemed to lose interest once she realized the girl was neither alive nor dead. The Queen walked over and swept the girl’s long black hair back enough to see her face. She scrunched up her nose at the young girl’s beauty.

Snapping her fingers again brought new servants running.

“Take her and put her with the rest of the cursed.”

The women gently plucked the girl from the air. The Queen wondered how many bodies lay waiting in the limbo between life and death. Not that she would forgive the vermin that had stolen her amulet, but she would enjoy watching the human be tortured by all the souls it had trapped prematurely in the Underworld. Eternity would not be long enough for all the lives that heartless human had taken trying to break the curse that came with stealing something born from the Underworld’s power. Since the human had not been able to break it thus far, she continued to collect bodies stuck in the in-between, their lives connected to the cursed one’s. When that insect finally died, so would all of those souls, and she would have a lovely new collection of pets.

The Queen smiled to herself as she watched one of the servants wrap her arms around the girl’s legs while the other wove her arms around the girl’s back. Slowly they carried her out, leaving the Queen to her thoughts again.

#SaturdaySpotlight is on D. V. Stone & Rock House Grill!

Good Morning from North Toledo Bend State Park!

Yep, while you're reading this I'm probably out fishing LOL. I'm not going to get all cocky though ;-) I'll just turn the spotlight on today's guest.

I introduced D. V. Stone to you last month as a new to me author and she shared inspiration and ideas with us on Wednesday Words with Friends. Today, we get a peek into her book, Rock House Grill published by The Wild Rose Press.

Take it away, D. V!

One man’s choices—One woman’s impact

Aden House, successful but driven chef and TV personality, refuses to slow down. His life implodes one night, damaging him both physically and emotionally. He's rescued by a woman he thinks of as his angel.

Shay McDowell has rebuilt her life after her divorce. She juggles volunteer EMT duties and her job, while dreaming of becoming a chef. She finds her way to Rock House Grill and back into the life of the man she helped save.

Can love be the ingredient needed to survive the many obstacles they face?

Excerpt: “Easy, you’re going to be okay.” A soft voice eased through the chaos around him. The owner of the voice grabbed his arms and held them in a firm but gentle grip. “I’m right here with you. You are not alone.”

“Can hardly m-move.” His voice slurred. “C-can’t see anything.”

“You’ve been in an accident. I’m an EMT with the ambulance squad,” the velvety voice calmly explained. “You can’t see well because we’re under a tarp. Hold still, okay?”

“‘K.” A small light flickered at the edge of his vision. It shone into a bag next to him. Penlight.

“You’re restrained to a board. It’s to keep your head from moving and causing more injury.” She continued to talk to him. The voice reached down somewhere inside him, calming and peaceful, so he focused on it. A glow from spotlights on the outside lit whatever covered them. The shadow gave the woman the appearance of a halo—like an angel.

Born in Brooklyn, D.V. Stone has moved around a bit and even lived for a time on a dairy farm in Minnesota before moving back east. Throughout her wandering, she always considered herself a Jersey Girl. She met and married the love of her life, Pete—a lifelong Jersey Man, and moved this time to Sussex County.  They live with Hali, a mixed breed from the local shelter and their cat Baby.

D.V.’s career path varied from working with the disabled to become a volunteer EMT, which in turn led to working in hospital emergency rooms and then in a women's state prison. After a few years, she took a break from medicine and became the owner of Heavenly Brew, a specialty coffee shop in Sparta NJ, and a small restaurant in Lafayette. Life handed some setbacks, and she ended up back in the medical field, but this time in a veterinary emergency hospital.

During the poor economy, she was laid–off from a long-time position she cared about. Devastated, D.V. wondered what to do with her life. Finding comfort in her love of reading, she realized it was now time to follow her dream of writing. It's been a long road but worth every minute of it. Now a published author, she also works in a people medical office again.

#WednesdayWordswithFriends welcomes D.V. Stone!

Good Morning Friends!

If you've followed my blog long enough, you know I just LOVE introducing you to new (to me) authors and their books. Today is no exception.

Though she may not be new to some of you, for those of us who didn't know her before now, D.V. Stone hosts a weekly blog, "Welcome to the Campfire." She is a multi-genre author of two independently published books. Felice, Shield-Mates of Dar is a fantasy romance. Agent Sam Carter and the Mystery at Branch Lake is a mid-grade paranormal.

Born in Brooklyn, D.V. Stone has moved around a bit and even lived for a time on a dairy farm in Minnesota before moving back east. Now let's see what D. V. has to share with us today....

Pam, thank you so much for allowing me to share today about where inspiration and ideas come from. I almost always keep a pen and paper with me. If I’m caught without them then I use the voice recorder on my phone or call myself and leave a message.

Inspiration comes from life experience, pictures, items, and even smells. Even a fractured piece of an overheard conversation can spark a character or scene. The image below, inspired one of my works in progress, Jazz House’s character Madeline.

In my first book (which is still a work in progress), I was watching Lord of the Rings, and this scene came on the screen.

For those not familiar. Haldir, an Elven Prince, was pretty stiff. When Aragorn hugged him, he froze. Then he relaxed into the greeting. This lone image was the inspiration for Kíeran in my epic romantic fantasy Kingdom at a Crossroad (again a work in progress). I asked what if? Straight-laced and very proper, Kíeran becomes enamored with a human woman who, after centuries, evokes feelings of love but also anger, fear, jealousy, heartbreak.

Rock House Grill, my new release, had many inspirations. In real life, I was an EMT and owned a restaurant. Blending these two things was very natural when I began to write the book under the pressure of National Novel Writing Month. Thirty days, fifty thousand words—go. Write what you know.

But I think my best inspiration came from my nephew. One day we were at a Christmas concert. He crawled over a couple of laps and plopped across from me. Here’s our conversation.

“Aunt Donna, you’re a writer, right?” Carter’s hands were propped on the chair with his chin in them.
“Yes,” I answered tentatively.

“Good. I want you to write about me, but I want to have a long mustache and ride a Harley.”

So, truly, inspiration can come from anywhere. Even a seven-year-old boy at a Christmas concert.

Whether you’re an author, painter, jewelry maker, or musician—keep your eyes and ears open. You never know where the ideas will come from.

Wow, you are SO right, D.V! Thanks for sharing. We wish you the best of luck and God's blessings with your writing career.

Hope you enjoyed today's inspiration friends. D.V.'s books can be purchased on Amazon. Be sure to leave a comment and enter into my monthly drawing for a $15 gift card!

Until next time, take care, stay safe & God Bless.

#SaturdaySpotlight is on Michael D Smith and Comm Wealth

Good Morning!

Today's guest is new to our blog so please welcome Michael D Smith with a peek into his book, Comm Wealth.

The CommWealth system, has created a society in which there is no legal claim to any kind of private property. Any object from your house to the clothes you’re wearing can be demanded by anyone, to be enjoyed for thirty days before someone else can request it. As actors in the Forensic Squad theatrical troupe attempt to adapt to this chaos, their breaking of the Four Rules sustaining the system, as several members navigate betrayals, double agents, and murder to find themselves leading a suicidal revolution.

Excerpt:

Rule One - You are free to enjoy the chosen object for thirty days. During this period no other person may request it.

Rule Two - The requestor is untouchable for thirty days by the person asked. Attempts at retaliation, such as demanding unusually large quantities from the original requestor after the thirty-day period, carry stiff penalties.

Rule Three - Once you ask somebody for something, you can never ask him or her for anything else again.

Rule Four - You can never ask for the same thing back from the person who got it from you, not even after his or her thirty days of enjoyment.

“You know... everything’s free...” Allan blurted.

“Well, of course everything’s free, Allan,” Jill said. “You really don’t have to give me anything for the refill, you know.”

“Well, if everything’s free, why don’t people go after what they want?”

“Well... they do,” Richard said. “Like, people were a little shy through about October, but after that... hell, you know how everyone’s getting whatever they want. I mean, it’ll be
a miracle if Steve gets back here with both the Volvo and the lumber.”

“Well, he’ll have the lumber,” Lisa said, “because he has thirty days to enjoy that. But he might be dragging it back on foot, that’s for sure.”

“No, he’s resourceful. He’ll get that truck!” Jill laughed, hand going to her magnificent breast.

“No, you know that’s not what I’m talking about,” Allan said. “I’m talking about what people really, deep down, want.”

“Well... I guess...” Jill said. “I mean, of course, at that level it’s not material things... that you want...”

“That’s... right...” Richard said, probing for her eyes.

They finally clicked on his for half a second.

“Right! Obviously!” Allan said. “So why don’t we have the guts to go after what we really do want?”

“Well... sometimes I guess we do... screw up the courage...” Jill whispered.

“Lisa, what do you think?” Allan demanded.

Lisa looked at the floor. “Well... sometimes... there are good reasons... for not... for not...”

“See... deep down,” Allan gulped, “I want Lisa!”

Everyone looked at the floor. Lisa turned to the front windows, chin high, as if she hadn’t heard a word.

“If everything’s free, why not Lisa?”

“What?” Lisa gasped.

“Why don’t I go after what I really want? It’s all so simple! And, look, I have two witnesses, Richard and Jill!”

“What?” Richard and Jill cried together.

“It’s simple! Lisa, I hereby ask—for you!” Allan grinned. “It’s really so simple! She has to be mine!”

Lisa whirled off her stool. “I can’t believe this! Allan, you’re crazy!”

“No, you have to give yourself to me! Isn’t that right, Jill? Richard?”

“Well... well, no, Allan... you’re joking!” Richard said.

“I’m not joking! Lisa, you’re mine, that’s all there is to it!”

Lisa’s eyes were wide with fear and disgust.

“Lisa, he’s—just joking,” Jill said.

“I’m leaving. Goodbye,” Lisa said. Allan stood and caught her wrist.

“Dammit, Allan, this is stupid!” Richard said, coming off his own stool.

“Look, I don’t care what anyone thinks!” Allan said. “I’ve made up my mind! It’s Lisa I want! And she’s mine! She’s mine!”

“Let me go!” Lisa moaned, jerking free.

hhmmm...definitely sounds different and intriguing. Thanks for sharing Michael!

#ThursdayThoughts - Special Spotlight on Alicia Dean & A World of Gothic!

Good Morning!

It's always a pleasure to welcome Alicia Dean to my blog and today is no exception. Instead of a 'normal' Thursday Thoughts post, we're spotlighting A World of GothicGothic Mystery Novellas ON SALE for ONLY 99 cents each through Halloween!

A group of authors from countries all over the world were drawn together by our love of the classic gothic mysteries by authors such as Daphne du Maurier, Victoria Holt and Phyllis A. Whitney.  While the stories are stand-alone, they each share a recurring thread of a Spinel stone, which can play a small or large part in the plot. We have stories set in Scotland, Greece, Oklahoma, Florida, France, Ireland, and more.  We hope readers have as much fun reading these stories (we recommend you do so with the lights on) as we had writing them.

#TuesdayTreasures with Alice Duncan!

Hello and Welcome!

Today's guest is new to our blog so please give her a huge WELCOME!

We each probably have a place that’s near and dear to our heart. For me, that place is Pasadena, California—not as it is now, but as it was when I was a kid. I’m including Altadena, the unincorporated community just north of Pasadena, in my love affair.

My Daisy Gumm Majesty cozy historical mystery novels are set in Pasadena and Altadena in the 1920s. That’s many, many years (oh, all right, so it’s not all that many) years before I was born, but the charm was there then—in fact, it probably had more charm then than it had when I came along.

In the 1920s Pasadena was a haven for wealthy folks who wanted to get away from the frigid weather in New England, or for moving-picture people who wanted an escape from the crowds and clamor of the big city (Los Angeles). The folks in my novels fit into this fabulously wealthy community by being their worker bees and minions. In fact Daisy, my heroine, is a phony spiritualist-medium. There’s not a rich woman in Altadena or Pasadena who doesn’t use her services from time to time. Working-class folks like Daisy and her family don’t have time for nonsense like spiritualism, but Daisy is extremely happy to earn money pretending to talk to the dead relations of the wealthy. She’s not as cynical as that sounds.

In the historical era encompassing the 1920s, it seemed to folks that life was spinning out of control. Many (too many, according to some) young people no longer wanted to emulate their parents. They didn’t want to work on the family farm. They wanted make money. They wanted to work in a big city, where excitement lay (they thought). They wanted to be stars! Or they went out, unsupervised) in automobiles, went to the flickers, or actually wore short skirts, rolled their stockings down, rouged their knees and frequented speakeasies. Parents despaired of their children, and children despaired of pretty much everything. Nothing seemed worthwhile to them. Nothing made any sense anymore (to the parents or their kids). The world had just been through a horrific world war, the likes of which no one had ever seen before. Hot on the heels of the Great War came the Spanish Influenza pandemic (which began in Kansas, but I didn’t name it) that killed nearly a quarter of the world’s population in 1918 and 1919. Both of those things left thousands, if not millions, of people mourning deceased loved ones.
Daisy, who is a kindhearted young women even if she is a fraud, attempts in every way she can to comfort rich people who are reeling from the loss of husbands, children, fathers, cousins, friends, etc. She does this with her Ouija board through her spirit control, a Scottish chap named Rolly; reading palms; and with her tarot cards and crystal ball. Daisy doesn’t mess with ectoplasm which, to her mind, is merely icky. She began her spiritualistic biz when she was ten years old, and she was shocked to her core when people took her seriously. When the series starts, she’s a star in the spiritualist-medium-ing world of Pasadena.

In her day, solidly middle-class women like Daisy and her female kin were supposed to stay home and take care of the house while their men-folk were out earning a living for the family. Neither Daisy’s husband, Billy Majesty, nor her father, Joe Gumm, are able to work, however. Billy was shot and gassed during the war, and Daisy’s father has a bum ticker. Therefore, the women in the family bring home the bacon

Daisy’s aunt, Viola, cooks the bacon for the family. This is a Very Good Thing for the Gumms and Majestys, since neither Daisy nor her mother can cook a lick. Daisy has managed to burn water in the past and, although Daisy’s mother did manage to make a raisin pie once, it was a traumatic experience for her. It didn’t help that neither Daisy nor her mother could figure out what the capital T in the recipe stood for. Fortunately, they decided the T was short for tablespoon, and things worked out. Although I didn’t say so in the book, I’m pretty sure Vi made the crust for that pie, since making pie crusts is a skill beyond either Daisy or her mom. According to Daisy (and pretty much everyone else in the Pasadena-Altadena area), her Aunt Vi is the best cook in the known universe. Vi has to work away from home, too, as cook for the ultra-wealthy Mrs. Pinkerton, Daisy’s most lucrative client. Mrs. Pinkerton lives on Orange Grove Boulevard, which in those days was nicknamed “Millionaire’s Row.” Daisy and her family live in a tidy little bungalow on South Marengo Avenue. In those days, Marengo was lined on each side with pepper trees that formed a kind of canopy over the street.

Because Vi is such a great cook, I’ve considered putting together a cookbook featuring some of her recipes. Unlike Daisy, I love to cook. Unlike Vi, I don’t cook fancy stuff, which requires more patience than I personally possess. I have the patience of a gnat on meth. However, in Daisy’s latest adventure, SPIRITS UNEARTHED, one of Vi’s recipes appears. It’s a recipe for Swedish-style smothered chicken and, in order to make it, you first have to haul out your Scotch kettle. Don’t know what a Scotch kettle is? Neither did I. So I did some research. Turns out, it’s a Dutch oven!
I have acquired quite a few vintage cookbooks over the years, and the main thing I’ve noticed as I’ve looked through them is that, way back then, folks cooked with milk, cream and butter without giving a thought to their waistlines. That’s probably because milk, cream and butter were believed to be good for a person. My mother’s mother owned a Jersey cow because Jerseys gave the richest milk with the highest cream content! Go figure. AND (this is a big and) there were no fast-food restaurants on every street corner back then, so it was more difficult for a person to get fat. Daisy’s Aunt Vi also makes her own bread (which Daisy can never cut straight. Her slices are always uneven—fat on one end and skinny on the other). Daisy gets teased a lot about her cooking catastrophes, and she considers herself a terrible failure in the kitchen. That’s because she is one, but don’t tell her that, please.
