#WednesdayWordswithFriends welcomes Holly Bargo!

Good Morning and Welcome to the final edition of Wednesday Words with Friends for August 2019!

Yep, this year is moving right along. Christmas decorations are out with fall and Halloween stuff. We don't even have time to enjoy one holiday without the others being shoved down our throats. Alas, that's the goal of marketing ... get it out there in their face!

UGH.

Don't get me started LOL! Instead, please allow me to introduce to you a brand new-to-me author, Holly Bargo, brought to us by Personalized Marketing Inc.

Take it away, Holly.....

‘I’m a writer’ is just the beginning
By Holly Bargo

When people ask me what I do, I tell them I'm a writer. Most of them follow that with a question as to how many books I've written. I understand that, but that direct jump from "writer" to "author" misses a lot of ground in between.

Just like medical professionals specialize, so do writers. The older I get and the longer I write as a professional, the more specialized I become. Whether such specialization arises from preference or experience or a mixture of both, anyone might speculate. However, I have discovered that my background and abilities do not suit some writing niches, such as technical writing or medical writing. Although occasionally funny, I have no predilection for comedy writing. Likewise, children's literature exceeds the scope of my skill as does that new breed of short story presented as a series of text messages.

(I suppose it would help if I texted, but I don't.)

While it's important to know what you can do and do well, it's also important to know what you don't do well and/or have no real inclination to master. I edit for a California fiction writer who, over the course of our association, has solidified his niche in writing westerns. He tried suspense. Although the stories adequately entertained, they did not have the enthusiasm of his westerns.

Knowing what you do well does not preclude learning to do something else well, too. Learning to master a new specialization, a new niche, a new genre takes time and effort: as Ringo Starr’s song goes, "It Don't Come Easy."

Writing well involves more than merely knowing how to string words together to form coherent sentences and express thoughts clearly. A complicated, layered skill, writing explores intellect as well as the senses. Sensory description, especially in fiction, immerses the reader within the story. Good writing informs, educates, entertains--although not necessarily all at once. Good writing grabs and holds the interest of the target audience of readers, regardless of the genre or platform. The hook may be Moby Dick's "Call me Ishmael" or a currently explosive topic. It may stimulate thought or give comfort, instruct or guide. It offers sufficient detail to ground the reader, but not so much as to overwhelm and distract.

A writer who has mastered his or her craft not only understands the conventions governing writing, but also understands how to break them to best effect. That writer knows how and why the rule was broken--a depth of understanding that many writers fail to achieve. Refer back to the song title hyperlinked above. Grammatically correct, it would be "It Doesn't Come Easily" and it would lose its punch.

Written content surrounds us, which means someone wrote it. The more effective the writing, the more it engages or persuades or convinces.

I'm a writer, but I don't only write books. I write newsletter articles, website content, B2B and B2C blogs, brochures, proposals, short stories, and more. My skills cover a broad range of topics, forms, and markets, but certainly not everything. I have yet to meet a writer who could write anything and everything and do it equally well.

Even William Shakespeare specialized.

Every word counts.
****
So true, Holly, thanks for sharing!

Holly Bargo never outgrew a love of fairy tales, legends, and myths. Or horses. However, one foot must remain firmly planted in the real world where Holly makes her living as a freelance writer and editor. She and her husband have two grown children and live on a southwest Ohio hobby farm with a menagerie indoor and outdoor animals.

Holly enjoys hearing from readers and other authors and may be contacted via the Hen House Publishing website: www.henhousepublishing.com.

When she's not working on other people's documents or reading, Holly finds time to transfer the voices in her head to paper ... er ... computer. If she doesn't, there's a definite possibility her mind will explode.

And for those who might wonder from where the pseudonym of Holly Bargo came, it's quite simple really. Horses. Namely an elegant and temperamental Appaloosa mare who has long since crossed the Rainbow Bridge and is fondly remembered for guarding toddler children and crushing a brand new pager.

The Eagle at Dawn (Immortal Shifters Book 4)
By Holly Bargo
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SLP5JGT

Rachel's brother uses her as collateral to settle a debt with an outlaw motorcycle gang. She flees to a local bar and pleads with a darkly handsome stranger to help her. His help results in homicide. When eagle shifter Diego's vacation is interrupted by the innocent young woman he recognizes as his mate, he flees with her across national borders because she's his and he's not letting her go.

Having essentially swapped one captor for another, Rachel knows the dashing, sexy Spaniard is keeping secrets from her. He showers her with kindness and generosity in exchange for her obedience. Diego's control over her and his secrets elicit her distrust and resentment.

When freedom beckons, Rachel answers its call; however, freedom brings hardship and indignity. Will she return to the controlling alpha male who stirs her blood or cling stubbornly to her freedom?

#SaturdaySpotlight is on Carol Raj & The Curious Prayer Life of Muriel Smith

Good Morning!

It is always a pleasure to introduce to you brand new to me authors, especially a fellow Pelican Book Group author, so please welcome Carol Raj to our spotlight with her book, The Curious Prayer Life of Muriel Smith.

One unlocked car door, one glance to the left, and suddenly seventy-one year old Muriel Smith is hurtling down the road at an alarming thirty miles per hour.

Will the teenage boy who carjacked her really shoot to kill?

Muriel can’t die yet. Not till she’s accomplished something on earth. Not till she’s seen her great grandchild.

But if Muriel Smith’s survival depends on her driving skills, she may not live much longer.

How could God have gotten everything so wrong?

Excerpt: "The ramp’s coming up, Mrs. B. Put your turn
signal on. What’s the matter with you?"

     The ramp was only feet away. Muriel took a deep
breath and stepped hard on the gas pedal. She zoomed
past the entrance to the highway.

     "What? You didn’t even try to turn!" Kevin’s head swiveled as the entrance ramp disappeared.

     "I did try to turn, Kevin. Honest. I tried really hard. I just couldn’t do it. I told you. I don’t merge. It scares me."
     Kevin’s voice went up half an octave. "Merging scares you more than my gun? Are you crazy? Didn’t I tell you I’d shoot? You can’t just say you don’t merge.You have to do what I say. That’s how it’s supposed to work."

~~~
Uh, oh, sounds like a thrilling ride! Thanks for sharing Carol.
Carol has been writing for many years. Mostly articles and short stories for children. She is a member of American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW) and lives with her husband of more than 40 years in beautiful New England. She is new to the publishing world so her website isn't up yet but will be soon. Meanwhile, find out more about her by connecting with her on Face Book and Good Reads.
The Curious Prayer Life of Muriel Smith can be purchased at Amazon, B&N, and Kobo.
Hope you enjoyed today's spotlight and that you'll check back weekly for Wednesday Words with Friends and Saturday Spotlight!
Until next time take care and God bless.
#WednesdayWordswithFriends a Story & Recipe from Gail Pallotta!
Good Morning!
Gail Pallotta is no stranger to our blog but always a welcomed guest. She has shared treasures and thoughts with us and been in our spotlight twice. So, without further ado, I'm turning the blog over to her.....
I recall my mother’s kitchen brimming with Southern cooking. My father thought I should learn the art, so I could practice then for when I got married. Never mind, I was ten years old when he suggested my internship. Nonetheless, it has served those at my kitchen table well.
Many think of fatback, frying, thick batter, butter and cream when they hear Southern cooking, but nowadays many Southern cooks use olive or grapeseed oil in lieu of unhealthy choices. To my surprise, as a young adult I learned my mother and I hadn’t been frying during my youth. We were sautéing. She didn’t own a deep fat fryer, but placed a thin film of oil in a frying pan, an equally thin batter on chicken, cubed steaks, etc., and cooked them on low heat.
 She taught me a tasty dish begins with a good food choice, fresh veggies and tender meat. We squeezed squash to see if it might be too soft and okra to see if it was too hard. Potatoes and onions were scrutinized for bad spots. When preparing meat, we cut out the gristle and excess fat.
All of her Southern recipes were handed down by mouth from her mother, who learned them from her mother, so on and so forth. Here’s one of my favorites. With football season getting underway, it’s a good dish for hungry fans.
Mother’s Macaroni and Cheese
Ingredients: Elbow macaroni noodles, cheese, milk, eggs, salt and pepper to taste, margarine or butter (optional)
Greased casserole dish. (I use olive oil)
The amount of noodles determines the number of servings. To serve four, prepare enough noodles for four.
Drain noodles. Fill a one-cup measuring cup with the cooked noodles and pour them one at a time into the greased casserole dish.
Measure exactly as many cups of grated cheese as there are noodles. (For example four cups of noodles and four cups of cheese packed tight) Cheeses can be all one kind or mixed—2 cups of cheddar, 1 cup of Monteray Jack, 1 cup of Colby. Use what you like. If there are extra noodles, save them for another dish. The amount of cheese must equal the amount of noodles.
Beat an egg. Stir into noodles and cheese. (Egg Beaters can be used)
Pour milk into the casserole dish until it’s almost even with the mixture of cheese, noodles and eggs. (Low-fat is fine.)
Salt and pepper to taste.
Completely cover the top of the macaroni and cheese with more grated cheese. Dot with margarine or butter if desired.
Bake on 350 degrees about forty-five minutes or until the entire casserole is firm.
What’s one of your favorite dishes?
MMMMM, Gail that sound delicious! Thanks for sharing.
#SaturdaySpotlight is on Erin Lorence & Fantastic Surviving!
Good Morning!
Have I got some exciting news for you! I'll share that at the bottom of today's post but first please welcome Erin Lorence back to share her book, Fantastic Surviving (#2 in the Dove Strong trilogy).
The Reclaim begins May 15th, and sixteen-year-old Dove Strong can’t do a thing to stop it... or can she? With only weeks until her people attack the unsuspecting nonbelievers, Dove accepts her recommission for peace.  Her journey is a success... until she runs into an old nemesis. Then a family member dies, and she is arrested as a terrorist as well as the prime murder suspect. Dove’s punishment? She must survive the unforgiving Chihuahuan Desert under the judging eye of every television-owning nonbeliever in the country. Saddled with a hostile camera crew, Dove fights to reach civilization while enduring Satan’s elements as well as a mysterious Amhebran coder who haunts her steps. Dove is strong. But is her faith strong enough to survive an ultimate friend betrayal as well as a decision of whether to sacrifice another family member to stop the May 15th attack?
Excerpt:
We huddled together. Someone swallowed. Someone else’s breathing was too loud. Minutes passed. Would we still be rooted here when morning dawned, held hostage by this wild animal with a vendetta? I couldn’t take this waiting game.
I chin-gestured at Wolfe. “You. Jump on Darcy.”
“What?”
“Shh. Like you did on that cougar in Texas.” I didn’t take my eyes off of the Benders’ pet [Darcy the bobcat].
“Geesh, Dove. I had the element of surprise—"
“Then move fast...” I gave him a one-handed shove forward, “and surprise her.”
My mistake because that small movement triggered the feline. She sprang.
Erin Lorence lives in Bonney Lake, Washington with her husband, Brian, and their two daughters, Brooke and Savannah. Her lifelong love of reading, her gratitude to God, and her enjoyment of hiking in Central Oregon all inspired her to write the Dove Strong Trilogy.
#WednesdayWordswithFriends : Gratitude
Good Morning Friends,
Well, today's guest couldn't be here so I get to share some thoughts with you on a word that, for years, has been a "buzz" word.
GRATITUDE is one of those words we love to hate.
What?
Hear me out LOL!
I love to be reminded to share and show gratitude and yet, I hate the fact that I have to be reminded.
Shouldn't gratitude come as naturally as breathing?
Yeah, it should but how often do we remember that?
I know I tend to forget so easily to show gratitude at all times and in all situations.
So I'm going to take a moment to share some gratitude with you....
I am grateful for the creator of this beautiful meme reminding me to be grateful. I don't know who Angie KK is or where/how I came across this and saved it to my computer but I appreciate such a lovely reminder.
I am grateful for Each of YOU my friends, family, fans and fellow authors! For your love and support and the many ways you show those attributes and bless my life.
I am grateful to my Heavenly Father for every blessing ever bestowed upon me and the many blessings to come.
These are a FEW of the things I am grateful for and hope to spend time every day expressing thanks to not only those lovely people directly responsible for these blessings, but to God for all He has gifted me with from the gift of life and love to every, single, breath I take. In fact, I'm making a commitment to do so right now and hope you'll not only join me but hold me accountable.
I recently read a short book, The Gratitude Jar, in which the author tells how her life changed by practicing gratitude every day for thirty days. Check it out!
The practice in this book is to write what you're grateful for on little slips of paper and put them in a jar (or container) designated for the task. I think it's a great idea but so is a gratitude journal or simply sitting around the dinner (or breakfast) talking about what you're grateful for. Any daily practice of gratitude works!
Doesn't matter how we express gratitude, only that we do.
Hope you enjoyed today's post friends and hope you'll drop by this weekend and see who's in our Saturday Spotlight!
Meanwhile, as you go about your day, please remember to show and share gratitude.
I'd love to know if and how gratitude has changed your life.
Until next time, take care and God bless.
#SaturdaySpotlight is on Laura Tolomei & Virtus Sex
Hhhhmmmmm, bet the title of that novel got your attention!
Good Morning Friends,
Today's guest is new to me and our blog and is brought to us by Personalized Marketing Inc. so let's see what it's all about.
This book was previously published as Virtus, The Sex but has been completely revised and doubled in size with the addition of many new scenes.
When Prince Duncan Caldwell loses his way home and knocks on a stranger's door, looking to find shelter, he doesn't know his life is about to change forever. Not because he can't tear his gaze away from the beautiful woman who opens that door, but more so because she's a stranger yet he can't shake the feeling she belongs to him. And discovering she's been banned from his home can't stop the vortex of his feelings nor the truth of his world from crashing down on him.
This is just the beginning of the Virtus Saga, where nothing is as it seems. Not the world, since its all-pervading sex drive hides a scary lack of violence. Not the people, since soul mates Prince Duncan Caldwell and Lord Christopher Templeton share a love that is unrivaled until that fateful knock on Ylianor Meyer's dilapidated shack.
This book starts the love and the passion that entwines fiery sex into this intricate three-way relationship. It's a unique connection, laced with jealousy and violence that are unknown to their world. This is not just another erotic dark fantasy series. This is the making of a trio. Of three remarkable characters that must overcome their uncontrollable lust to face the truth about themselves and their planet if they want to defeat the darkness about to devour them. To be as one whilst three! To share power and love in equal measures. This is their real challenge, the lesson they must learn. Otherwise, how will their world survive?
Excerpt
First, there was music.
Sweet, mellow and smooth, it filled the void until he drowned in the velvety thickness of the notes, with the ever new and different tunes. And he loved it, even if it wasn’t his creation, taking pride in directing the exquisite songs, also guided by that one voice. A soft whisper ever-present in his system, it didn’t blend with the rest of the sweet melody. It kept to the fore, echoing above all other sounds.
Then there was light.
Not just one. Thousands of colored flashes dispelled the darkness and connected to each note, anticipating or delaying it according to the rhythm, shifting to adapt to the new melody. And he liked to watch how light matched the music, how it delineated the tune even before it became sound. It was all part of the novelty of being the mastermind behind this foreign world, so very different from his original one.
Control was never enough, though. The more I had, the more I craved. That was when the nightmares began. Filled with all sorts of violence, from torture to carnage, they were foul and terrifying, yet also exciting to the point I relished each and everyone like a thirsty man deprived of water for far too long. Best of all, they awakened a completely new pleasure that required immediate fulfillment in increasing dosage.
Wow, Laura, this sounds like a fascinating series for those who read erotic dark fantasy, now tell us a little about yourself...
If you really want to know, I was born in 1965 in Rome, Italy, but soon started my travelling career. At the age of five, my parents took me to Lagos, Nigeria, where I grew up free and hot like I've never been since. I loved it there and still think of it with nostalgia. Anyway, it was also where I learned English.
After my African experience, I was ready to tackle the US. I lived in Atlanta, GA, five teen-age years, attending the Crestwood High School, where I started my writing career by publishing a short story Nostalgia on the Crestwood Journal. Very thrilled about discovering my new talent, I went ahead during college, writing for the Emory University journal The Phoenix. Three articles mark my first-and last-steps in journalism, "The peace Corps", "WAMM, Women Against Military Madness," and "Lesbism".
After my American experience, I moved back to Rome, but still kept living from time to time abroad, spending several months in Mumbay India, a country I always felt very close to me in more ways than one.
Today, I write both in Italian and English, mostly fiction of various genres, from fantasy erotica, to mysteries up to plain ordinary life stories.
Feel free to look over my current and future projects by visiting my website www.lallagatta.com. Get your copy of Virtus Sex from Amazon.
Remember friends, check back with us weekly for Wednesday Words with Friends and another Saturday Spotlight.
Until next time take care and God bless.
#WednesdayWordswithFriends Guest Maxine Douglas!
Good Morning
Today's guest, Maxine Douglas is a member of Authors Helping Authors promo group and has just released the first in a seven book series called The Widows of Blessings Valley. She is new to our blog so please give her a warm welcome!
Webster defines grief as “emotional suffering caused by or as if by bereavement” and a widow as a “woman who has lost her husband by death and has not married again.” If these definitions were as simple as they sound.
To the Widows of Blessings Valley, these two words mean so much more. They mean living their lives without the one they gave their hearts and souls to. The one they vowed to love forever. It means crying themselves to sleep at night. It means trying to go on in a new life without knowing how. It means knowing no matter how much they try to heal they never really completely do. No matter how much they think they’ll never love again, they will but differently.
They say time heals all things. That may be true or may not. All I know is the scab on my heart and soul was slowly peeled off and bled again over the months I wrote this book. But I had to write it regardless of my pain, tears, and sorrow.
I cannot promise the next ones will be the same. I'm not sure I want to feel the heartache all over again. Regardless I will tell their stories...the Widows of Blessings Valley.
Maxine Douglas writes in many genres and has found a love for the western historical romance. In her new series Widows of Blessings Valley, Maxine draws from her experience as a widow. A Wisconsin native, Maxine resides in Chickasha. While Maxine may miss her family and friends in the north, she loves the mild winters Oklahoma has to offer. She has four grown children, two granddaughters, and a German Shorthair Pointer. And many friends she now considers her OK family.
Maxine’s western along the Chisholm Trail, The Marshal’s Bride, was a 2017 International Digital Award Finalist in the Western Historical-Short category.
Maxine is a current member of Romance Writers of America, Wisconsin Romance Writers of America, Oklahoma Writers Federation, Inc. and its affiliate Oklahoma Romance Writers Guild, Inc.
My Review of Elizabeth
4- Stars
The Widows of Blessings Valley - Elizabeth is a sweet story filled with a kaleidoscope of emotions. We watch as two wounded people come together with new hope into new life and love.
Widowed from a mining accident, Elizabeth struggles with grief and guilt when Auggie, a man scarred both physically and emotionally hires her as a seamstress for his hotel. The two become friends, albeit a bit reluctantly and love soon blossoms.
Widowed myself ten years ago, I found the emotions Elizabeth struggled with to be an honest reflection of what a woman goes through after losing the love of her life.
Hope you enjoyed today's Wednesday Words with Friends, friends and that you'll visit weekly for  more great information and drop by on the weekends for Saturday Spotlight.
Until next time, take care and God Bless.
