#ThursdayThoughts with Dave Biebel

Good Morning!

Today's guest is brand new to our blog so please give Dave Biebel a great, big, SW LA welcome and see what thoughts he has to share with us today. Take it away Dave....

Some Uplift for Your Downcast
Dr. David Biebel

Every day that I knew him, my grandfather read the New York Times, front to back. Many of those days, when I was in prep school and college and seminary he would end the letter or conversation with this question: Do you think we’ll ever beat the Russians? He died a few years ago, and I’m glad that he didn’t live to see the chaos in our world today, because he took a lot of it inside, with the result that he experienced quite a lot of anxiety over things he couldn’t change. From one who knows, it’s not hard to inherit this tendency.

Thankfully, there is Jesus, Prince of Peace. My most uplifting thought these days is that the Prince of Peace is still the Prince of Peace, and all around us people long for what he can bring to them and to their world. It’s up to Followers of Christ to tell them, and show them -- “to give them what they need in the guise of what they want.”

And that summarizes why I wrote the book, Away in a Manger: The Christmas Story from a Nativity Scene Lamb’s Point of View. It’s stealth evangelism when an agnostic parent reads the words in this book to the children, at Christmas time or anytime. Imagine that parent reading, from this little book:

"It was the prophet Isaiah who said the Lord would keep us in perfect peace, if our mind was stayed on him. Isaiah prophesied:

... the Lord himself will give you the sign. Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Im¬manuel (which means "God is with us").

"We all know that's not the way it works; but God is in the miracle business and that is how he decided to make it work. Then, just a few verses later, the prophet added this":

For a child is born to us, a son is given to us.
The government will rest on his shoulders.
And he will be called:
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

"What a marvelous description of the Lord Jesus Christ, given approximately 700 years before he was born!"
-----
When I was a pastor, it was challenging to find a way to tell this old, old story in a new way, or at least in a way that had the congregation sitting on the edge of their pews, engaged in a novella with great original art, versus sitting on the edge of their pews hoping the roast wouldn’t burn if the sermon went too long.
Though I never achieved it then, a chance meeting with an inquisitive lamb named “Ransom” -- which occurred in my mind about three years ago – and the help of a great young artist, Marina Calin, we resurrected the Christmas story project.

The following is a fellow author’s reaction: This extraordinary Christmas storybook tells the Christmas story in an entirely new and fresh way that will capture the hearts of both children and adults. The book is filled with beautiful lifelike illustrations and rich content that will educate children and surprise adults, enriching the typical way the story has grown to be told with fascinating Christian history and solid theology. Using God's creation, in this case a lamb, to tell the Christmas story paints a compelling picture of the true meaning of Christmas. Anyone who has children in their life should first read this book and then give it as a gift with a personal inscription to each and every child they can think of this Christmas.  -- Monte Swan
