Good Morning,
It's been a crazy busy couple of days so I'm not going to take much of your time this morning but turn it over to my friend, Kara O'Neal & The Christmas Bride (Texas Brides of Pike's Run)....
Good Morning and Welcome Back to another edition of Saturday Spotlight where we're featuring Christmas books through Jan 11th!
Today it is my pleasure to bring Kara O'Neal back with her historical romance, The Christmas Bride.
Take it away, Kara....
When I wrote MR. PIERCE’S HERO, I fell in love with Alfred Taylor. He is a secondary character in the story and returns to Pike’s Run to help his sister with her troubles. He’s quite formidable, and his reasons for being gone so long made my heart ache for him.
So…I had to give him a happy beginning. And that happens in THE CHRISTMAS BRIDE.
I dedicated THE CHRISTMAS BRIDE to my grandparents. The heroine, Truly Cunningham, reminds me a little of my grandmother, and my grandma and grandpa got married on Christmas Day. (It was the only day my grandpa didn’t have to work.)
This was a lovely, short story that gives two very lonely and sorrowful people hope during one of the most joyous times of the year. Alfred and Truly are wonderful characters and tugged consistently on my heart strings. You’ll love them!
BLURB: Truly Cunningham flees after her fiancĂ© jilts her for her sister. With nowhere to go, she ends up in Pike’s Run, Texas, hiding in the town’s opulent Royal Hotel. As she nurses her pain, finding no comfort in the Christmas season, she is slowly running out of funds. She must find a way to support herself or return to Dallas where her sister is the wife Truly had planned to be.
Alfred Taylor, manager of the Royal Hotel, hates Christmas. The decorations. The celebrations. The presents. All of it. And he must help the Ladies’ Auxiliary put on the Christmas Eve social. The only bright spot is the presence of a new guest, Truly Cunningham. She is beautiful, mysterious, and warming parts of his heart he thought dead.
When Truly asks for a position in his hotel as hostess of the establishment, Alfred immediately hires her. Which becomes dangerous. He can’t stay away from her, and even worse, wants to spill his secrets. Will he lose his one chance at happiness, or will Christmas finally give him the hope it promises?
EXCERPT: When Truly reached the foyer of the hotel, people hastened about, all with things to do and places to go. She had no such joy. Pain pressed on her breast, making it difficult to breathe. At what point would the knife in her back and heart stop twisting?
She blinked, clearing away threatening, hated, vile tears. No more. Never again.
Before entering the dining room, her gaze caught on Alfred Taylor. He stood at the desk, his head bowed over a ledger. His suit coat molded to his broad shoulders. His vest hugged his torso. His brown beard couldn’t hide the angled jawline.
He was a gorgeous man.
When he looked up, she averted her eyes and quickened her steps. What did his handsomeness matter? Henry had been attractive. Beautiful, really. Which had been one of the problems.
A waitress led Truly to her usual table near the French doors that led to one of the verandahs. The fire blazed in the hearth near the entrance, brass sconces hung from the white, oak paneling, linen covered all the tables, while china and crystal gleamed in the light streaming through the many exits to the luxurious porch.
Truly didn’t need to see a menu, but she took one anyway. Did the employees of the Royal Hotel wonder why she, a single female with no escort, was still here? Did Mr. Taylor wonder?
She hoped not. But…if he did, would he pry? Would he tell her she needed to move on? How long could someone stay in a hotel?
Pike’s Run had a boardinghouse, but she’d been so comfortable she hadn’t wanted to move. And she felt hidden here. There was so much activity she got lost in the shuffle. Well, rather, she hoped she got lost.
After ordering oatmeal, biscuits and coffee, Truly sat with her hands folded in her lap.
A man approached her table. He doffed his hat and smiled. “Ma’am, may I keep you company?”
She opened her mouth to refuse, but before she could, Mr. Taylor appeared.
“McClain?”
The gentleman frowned. “What is it?”
Mr. Taylor jerked his head toward the foyer. “I’ve got some information to pass along to you.”
With an irritated expression, Mr. McClain excused himself and strode toward the exit.
Before following his guest, Mr. Taylor locked gazes with Truly. A gentle light shone from his warm, brown eyes. He gave her a polite nod.
Surprise moved through her as he left. Had he interfered only to protect her from whoever Mr. McClain was? Perhaps his heart was as perfect as his face and form.
But she wouldn’t determine the answer. Because it didn’t matter.
Good Morning,
I'm off on another adventure today. My granddaughter has orientation at Stephen F Austin State University in Nacogdoches, TX and I'm going with her since both of her parents have to work. Retirement is SO great LOL!
Today's guest is not new so I'm just handing the blog over to Kara O'Neal to share her latest release with us. Take it away, Kara.....
Blurb: Felicity Capwell Archer had no idea she'd married a thief and a killer. And even though she's the one who turns him in, people still think she helped her former husband steal and is now hiding the money. To protect herself from the repercussions and attacks, she hires Butch Wilder. Gambler. Gunslinger. And a giant who hides a heart of gold.
Butch Wilder grew up on the streets of New Orleans, learning how to fight, how to gamble and how to use a Colt .45 with deadly precision. When Felicity begs him to protect her family, she's too damned pretty and too intriguing to turn down. Determined to avoid any emotional attachments and to keep it purely professional, Butch takes the job. But he finds himself sitting down to nice meals, walking her children to school and being part of a family for the first time.
Only by finding and returning the stolen loot can Felicity and her daughters ever truly be safe. Following clues she deciphers from her former husband’s letters, Felicity and Butch travel to the outlaw-infested Hell's Half Acre. It's madness, but Butch will do anything to protect Felicity. Even if it means his life.
Excerpt
When Butch reached Rickman’s office, he tried to see through the windows to the inside, but the grimy panes allowed for nothing. Cautious but unafraid, he walked in without hesitation.
But when he found who had come calling, he about swallowed his tongue. He stopped short, his hand on the knob, his mind devoid of all thought.
“Are you Mr. Wilder?”
Her honey voice poured through him, grabbing hold of his senses.
She cleared her throat. “I’m sorry to interrupt your work, sir, but I’m looking for Mr. Butch Wilder. Are you he?”
Snap out of it, man! Butch blinked then cleared his throat. “Uh, yeah. Yes. I’m Butch Wilder.” He shut the door.
She looked him over.
He steeled himself against the fear he might see in her eyes due to his size, but when her gaze touched his face, what he found was desperation. Confused and a little nervous, he wrapped his thumbs around his suspenders.
“Do you know who I am?”
Would it upset her if he did? But he couldn’t lie to her. Somehow she’d know if he did. “Yes.”
She twitched her lips as if frustrated by her infamy. He couldn’t blame her.
After letting out a slow exhale, she said, “My home, and by that I really refer to my children, my housekeeper and myself, has been under attack since my former husband was arrested and tried.”
So…she had gotten divorced. Or was it an annulment? He stayed quiet, not knowing what she wanted or if he was allowed to respond.
“We need constant protection until this is settled.” She waved a hand in the air. “Until either the…the hanging or…” She paused, and her gaze went distant.
He narrowed his eyes slightly. What bothered her? The event she hadn’t mentioned or the hanging?
She shook her head. “I apologize. The last weeks have been rather harrowing.”
He could imagine. From the arrest, to the trial, to now…
A portion of what she’d said registered in his mind. “I’m sorry, ma’am. But why are you here? You mentioned…protection?” Hell. Was she going to ask him to…
“Yes. The sheriff’s office can’t provide anyone, so he suggested I hire you.”
Butch’s mind whirled with the implications.
“I will pay you well, plus meals, because I would prefer it if you moved into my home. People come at all times of the day and night. I’m fearful of what has occurred in my absence for the last few hours.” She pressed two fingers to her temple and rubbed. “Not that I can do anything about it,” she muttered. She let out a weary exhale.
While she struggled with exhaustion, he tried to make sense of what she was offering. It was ridiculous. Him? Butch Wilder? Protect her? And her family?
Hell. That was damned laughable.
Well, looks like you've written another winner, Kara! Good luck and God's blessings with Felicity's Fortune and all of your books.
Thanks for stopping by to support Kara, Friends. Please be sure and visit Carolyn Miller on Saturday Spotlight!
Until next time.... Peace be with you. Grace and Favor go before you and may you be Blessed with a Rich Increase of God's Almighty Good!

Born and raised in Texas, the state had to be the setting for my first series. From the food to the fun, like floating the rivers, it is the fire in my blood that inspires me. My family and friends take center stage in my books. My sisters and best friends are my heroines, and my husband created my favorite hero. Love and family are the point of my stories, and I seek to entertain, relieve stress, and inspire people. Books can take one on a journey that one can relive over and over. I am extremely grateful to those authors who did that very thing for me. I learned and I fell in love with their words and characters. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Hello and Welcome!
Kara O'Neal is no stranger to our blog and it is my pleasure to welcome her back with her latest book, Prickly Poppy.
Take it away, Kara...
When I was little, one of the “big ideas” my mother had, and she had A LOT, was to venture out into the Texas Hill Country to see all the wildflowers. We would travel the backroads and find fields and fields of flowers. It was a riot of colors and varieties.
I fell in love with the land on those trips, and it was my proof that God was real, because only He could make something so beautiful.
So…when I decided to start my new series, I wanted to match each heroine up with a wildflower.
I suppose people might believe that wildflowers are rebellious. And perhaps they are, because they grow where they want and when they want, but, to me, wildflowers are who they are and you’re either gonna like them, or you’re not. They’re not trying to be rebellious, they’re just themselves. And that’s ok. They’re gonna be who they are, whether they’re a dandelion, a bluebonnet, or a yellow rose, they’re not gonna change.
That idea helped me when I was little and made up part of who I am and how I make my decisions.
It’s helped me create some pretty amazing female characters, and Hazel Rutherford is one such lady. She’s the PRICKLY POPPY, and because of that, snags the heart of the devil-may-care saloon owner.
She was a lot of fun to write, and I know you’ll love her as much as I do!
Blurb: Brownwood, Texas, 1883
Two years ago, Hazel Rutherford fled from her lying, greedy fiancé. Now, her young cousin is within his sights, and Hazel must return and rescue her. Which means facing a manipulative villain.
But her uncle won’t let her go alone…
Kit Kirby is the man tasked with escorting her and protecting her while she’s in Brownwood.
Kit Kirby. Saloon owner. Hell raiser. The man that all the ladies—from five to eighty—swoon over. All except Hazel, that is. Since the day she met him, they’ve done nothing but fight.
He calls her prudish. She calls him irresponsible. He calls her prickly. She calls him a conceited hell-trap. There’s no way she’ll make it to Brownwood with her sanity intact.
But when Kit changes the game and kisses her, she’ll be lucky if she gets through the ordeal still the owner of her heart.
Excerpt:With his drink in hand, Kit turned to face her.
Hazel twitched her lips, irritated, embarrassed, and apprehensive with depending on him.
He assessed her with his gaze while the silence stretched.
She refrained from fidgeting and didn’t dare fall into the trap of asking him what he thought of her now. Certainly, he didn’t judge her.
But she really had no idea what he was thinking. He was a ridiculous mystery she didn’t care to solve.
He quirked his lips at her. “I find it hard to believe that any man could pull one over on you, so I don’t think you ever really loved this bastard.”
She pressed her lips into a thin line, remembering things she didn’t want to. He was wrong. She had loved him.
Kit cleared his throat, seeming to accept what was ahead for them. “You don’t want me to take you, and I understand that. But I’m what you’re gonna get. I might be a…” he furrowed his brow as if trying to recall something. “What did you call me that first time we spoke? A conceited hell-trap?”
She flushed but still kept silent. It was true anyway. She had not been wrong.
“Yeah, that was it.” He chuckled then took a sip of his drink, watching her over the rim. He let out a satisfied breath, then glanced at the amber liquid. “Good stuff.”
Annoyance began to simmer inside her, and her cheeks heated with the control it took to bite back the reprimand burning her tongue.
“I can see you’re gettin’ het up again, so let me finish.” He leaned forward slightly. “I’m taking you. I’ll protect you once we’re there, and I’ll sure as hell relish the chance to make this ass pay for hurtin’ you like that. No one’s gonna put a hand on you or your cousin. If I have to kill this Anson Welch, I won’t bat an eye. He deserves to be horsewhipped for lying to you and treating you like that. Nothin’s gonna happen to you.”
If he’d told her he was going to be a priest, she would’ve been less stunned. For the first time since knowing him, he actually seemed responsible. He’d spoken with such conviction and determination that she couldn’t doubt a single one of his promises. His words had mollified her somewhat, and she relaxed slightly.
“No one’s gonna hear about your secret from me, either.”
Well…
He had effectively assuaged most of her concerns. They still weren’t going to get along, but they were both adults. Surely, they wouldn’t argue for the entire duration of the trip. Her uncle trusted him. For some reason.
So…she was going to let it go. It remained to be seen if he was the best person to take her, but her uncle was wise and usually a good judge of character.
She twitched her lips, realizing she needed to say something, especially since she’d protested quite vehemently. After taking a deep breath and letting it out, she said with acquiescence in her tone, “Thank you. I appreciate your help and your discretion.”
“You’re welcome.” He rolled his tongue against the inside of his cheek. “You’re probably not gonna like this, but I hope I at least get to knock your former fiancĂ© around some. I can’t imagine anyone runnin’ around on you. You’re a pretty little thing.”
His words stunned her. She didn’t know what to say to his compliment, especially since it was coming from him.
“I still think you’re prickly, though.”
And her surprise shot into irritation. She gritted her teeth.
He took a final swallow of his drink, winked at her, then left.

Good Morning from Mt. Belvieu, TX!
We evacuated Thursday and are hoping to go home tomorrow. Not sure yet, the extent of damage from Hurricane Delta but praying it's not so extensive that we have no home to go to. Prayers from you appreciated.
Today's guest has visited before with some of her Pike's Run series, so please welcome Kara O'Neal back with The Sheriff's Gift, Texas Brides of Pike’s Run Series, Book 2.... But first a little note from Kara about the book.....
The Sheriff’s Gift was a wonderful book to write. It allowed me to delve into the lives of the people in the town I was creating. Alice Parker, the heroine of the story, is the schoolteacher, and Conner Lonnigan, the hero, is the sheriff. They are highly involved in the lives of the townsfolk and are often called upon to help. Alice and Conner are strong-willed people with caring hearts and no-nonsense attitudes. Not only are they perfect for the town, they are perfect for each other.
The Sheriff’s Gift sets up several other books in the series. Many of the students, once they are old enough, end up with their own stories. It has been so much fun watching them grow and change and establish their futures. Writing is a joy, and I’m so glad I get to spend time with these wonderful characters!
Strong-willed and independent, Alice Parker is certain she’s
meant to be a school teacher. She accepts her first position in Pikes Run,
ready to mold the minds of young children, but unprepared to deal with her
attraction to Sheriff Conner Lonnigan. If the board finds out she’s
tumbled into his embrace more than once, she would be fired.
Sheriff Conner Lonnigan is awed by Alice Parker. He falls for her almost
immediately, but the demands at home forbid him from marrying. Conner’s
duties as sheriff control his days, and his mother’s panic attacks control his
nights. He doesn’t have the freedom to devote himself to Alice, but that
can’t stop him from pursuing her anyway.
Alice and Conner fight their love for each other, but the wants of the heart
become too much to ignore. As they battle the demands of their jobs, the couple
finds that ultimate fulfillment can only be found in each other's arms.
Excerpt:
“What is it?” Alice asked.
He didn’t reply until she was outside. “I have somethin’ for
you.”
She gave him a sideways glance. “I hope it isn’t another
complaint from Beulah.”
He grinned down at her. “Nope.” He jerked his head in the
direction of the yard. “Come on.”
She followed him into the yard and toward the barn. When
they entered the building, the cows lowing and the horses swishing their tails,
he stopped and pulled her into an empty stall.
They were alone except for the animals. This was what she’d
tried to avoid, and here she was, despite her usual unflinching self-control,
in the wrong situation. Though her heart exalted, her mind raced for ways to
get this over with quickly.
He smiled down at her, his hand still at her elbow from when
he’d pulled her over. “You look pretty today.”
“Only today?” she heard herself ask. Oh, dear! She was flirting.
He chuckled low and deep. “Every day. You’re always pretty.”
In her wildest dreams, she’d never thought to hear a man say
such a thing. “What did you want to show me?”
He flushed beneath his confident smile. “A present. I
ordered it for you.”
Alice’s heart stopped then sped like a locomotive. “Truly?”
she whispered.
He nodded.
“But…but I didn’t get you anything,” she protested.
His smile turned soft, and her knees went to jelly. “Just
havin’ you here is present enough.”
If he said anything else as tender and beautiful, she might
faint from want of him. “Oh,” she murmured.
He gazed at her for a few moments more before reaching into
his coat and pulling out a box wrapped in brown paper. He handed it to her.
Gingerly, she took it and unwrapped it slowly, wanting to
savor the moment. Once the paper was gone, she sprung the latch on the box and
lifted the lid. Her throat ached with emotion when she saw what sat in the
velvet casing.
A small ceramic house, the rooftop covered in snow, stared
up at her. It was beautiful. She ran a finger over its smoothness. “Thank you,”
she rasped.
“There’s more.” He took it from her and lifted it out of its
case. “It’s open in the back. You can put a candle here and since the windows
are cut out, it’ll look like there’s—”
“Firelight,” she breathed. Awed and deeply touched, she
gazed up at him. He’d remembered her memory of her mother and bought her a gift
to commemorate the time. “Oh, Conner. How wonderful.”
He swallowed. “You like it?”
She closed her eyes in disbelief then opened them once more
to look up into his handsome, dear face. “I adore it.”
And in that moment, everything she’d ever wanted changed forever. She loved Conner Lonnigan with all her heart. The emotion stampeded through her, causing her to tremble with its force. She couldn’t stop herself from rising up and taking his lips with hers.

Good Morning and Welcome!
Today's guest is not new to our blog. In fact, Kara O'Neal is a regular visitor here and I'm always happy to share her new books with you! Many of you know I retired from my insurance job in May and I'll tell you this, if I can get things squared away and some of the irons out of the fires in my life, I only pray to be as prolific as Kara!
Please welcome her back with a peek into her latest Pike's Run book, The Deputy's Damsel. Take it away, Kara!
Good Morning!
Wow. Can you believe we're at the end of January already? I guess time does really fly - whether you're having fun or not LOL!
Today's guest is no stranger to our blog so please welcome Kara O'Neal back with The Editor's Kisses, the latest release in her Pike's Run series....
Plus, we get a “true love’s kiss” moment. And I adore those so much!
I had to do a lot of research for this book. I had to learn how to operate a printing press, which was quite interesting. I learned that the type – or letters – are contained in a case. Which is more like a cabinet of drawers than a briefcase. The capital letters were stored in the upper section, and non-capital in the lower section.
And this is how we began dubbing letters “upper case” and “lower case”. Isn’t that cool? I loved learning that!
Writing historicals can be a lot of work, but when you throw true love into the mix, the story comes alive! The Editor’s Kisses is a romance of heart and courage. Of risk-taking. Stephen and Constance take risks in love and in life. And they become better people for it…
One kiss changes the whole game…
Constance Forrester is a suffragette determined to change society. When Stephen Dawson, her school chum, starts a newspaper, she asks Stephen to take a risk and employ her as a journalist.
Stephen immediately turns her down. But his interactions with Constance have made the town princess, Madeline Talbut, curious. Stephen has loved Madeline for years, and he concocts a plan: enter into a fake courtship with Constance, and in return, Constance can be a journalist for his newspaper.
It’s a chance Constance can't pass up. So what if she has to attend parties and withstand Stephen's heart-melting kisses? A suffragette must forge through barriers, but when Stephen changes the game, Constance finds herself the object of the editor's desire…
Excerpt
Setting: The Talbut Parlor
The Problem: An annoying parlor game
Madeline’s spinning of Constance was a little rough, but Stephen held his tongue. When their hostess let go, Constance fumbled for a moment before Stephen raised himself up and yanked her into his lap.
The shouts of excitement and delight that went around the room nearly deafened him. People playfully called out “cheater”, but Stephen didn’t care, especially when Constance whisked off her mask and looked immensely relieved to see he’d successfully caught her.
They headed to the closet without fuss. Constance almost looked as if she was dying to climb inside. She probably wanted to get the farce over with.
Once they were squeezed into the confining space, with their chests pressed together in a way Stephen had only fantasized about, she said, “Thank you. I don’t know what I would have done—”
He covered her mouth with his hand, having dislodged it from his side. Then he leaned near her ear. “They might be able to hear us,” he whispered.
She flinched.
He lowered his arm, and she let out a slow breath. He wished he could see her face. For more reasons than to satisfy his worry she was all right.
He did everything he could to ignore the touch of her body along his front. He tried not to remember how she looked, how her eyes lit up, how her expression sharpened when she was interested in something. Why had he watched her all night?
But he knew. He knew very well. She was captivating. Intriguing. And so damned lovely.
Why was he having feelings for her? Wasn’t his love for Madeline strong enough to withstand attraction for another woman? But if it was, he would be in the closet with his hostess and not the lady he pretended to the world held his fancy.
He had to kiss her. He had to discover if this attachment was real. Besides, if he didn’t kiss her, everyone would wonder why. And for some strange reason, he needed every fellow out there to understand Constance Forrester was his. He closed his eyes and realized his attitude was no better than a caveman’s. But the need to possess and brand raced through him without pause, and he couldn’t fathom how to check it. Except to kiss her and get her out of his system once and for all.
“Constance,” he uttered. “I’m gonna kiss you.”
She flinched again.
“I won’t hurt you, I swear it. But if I don’t kiss you…they’ll all question us and our…attachment.” He was an ass. He was using their agreement to coax her into acquiescence, and while he knew it, and was ashamed of it, he continued. “It will only be for a second. I’ll just brush my lips with yours.”
In the darkness, he felt her slight nod against his chin. His heart pounded at her quiet surrender.
When she pulled back as far as the space would allow and lifted her head to his, heat slashed through him. He’d never needed a kiss as much as he needed hers.
Madeline had kissed him. Once. Behind the schoolhouse when they were sixteen. And that moment hadn’t caused nearly the anticipation this one did.
He lowered his head and swallowed her gasp. It wasn’t a brush, even though he only set his lips on hers. It was a fire. A shot of whiskey that whipped through him and pooled in his gut. He deepened the connection, and she let him, sighing and sinking into him despite already being as close to him as he could get her.
He melted. He needed to move to the ground and cover her, press her down and make her his. He used his tongue, tasting her. She capitulated instantly and opened her mouth under his. He took what she allowed without hesitation as his free hand came up to grip her waist.
The damn closet was too small. His left hand was wedged between her side and the slender door. But though he couldn’t get his arms around her, he didn’t stop the kiss. It went on and on, stealing his breath, tightening his chest and making him doubt everything he’d ever known about his heart.
Rapid footsteps had him surging backward, and he knocked his head on the wall.
The door flew open, and cool air blasted his cheeks. He and Constance fell out of the space, their limbs tangling as they tried to right themselves.
Peals of laughter rung around them as Stephen reached out a hand to balance her. She latched on as if she didn’t want to let go, and his muscles vibrated with hope she had enjoyed the moment as he had.
It had taken less than a few seconds for him to realize kissing her had been the wrong thing to do. But also the most right, most perfect, most sound judgement he’d ever made in his life.
As those who’d crowded around the entrance to the kitchen went roaring with laughter back into the parlor, he gazed at Constance. And his world tilted.
Her flushed cheeks and bright eyes made his heart constrict with an emotion he was too afraid to name at the moment. But he knew what it was. He knew.
How in the devil had it happened? Was he a fool? A fickle man?
He swallowed. “Do you want to leave?”
And before his eyes, he witnessed a transformation that set his blood on fire. Determination changed her expression, and she lifted her chin.
“Certainly not. I’m quite all right, I assure you.” She gave a shake to her skirts. “We’ve a job to do, Stephen Dawson, and I’ll not let you down.”
She exited the kitchen with a swirl of satin, and he followed with less sure steps. She wouldn’t let him down, he knew it. But he feared he might disappoint her, for if she knew the direction of his thoughts, she would never forgive him. Constance Forrester had no time for any man. She had plans. Plans that didn’t include caring for the heart of the newspaper editor.
