#SaturdaySpotlight is on Susan Howell & The Spirit of Vanderlaan!

Good Morning and Welcome Back to Another Edition of Saturday Spotlight,

I've been home a full week now and still playing catch-up but I πŸ’–πŸ’–πŸ’– my life! And, I love bringing back a previous guest with another of his or her great books.

Thanks for coming back, Susan. Please tell us about The Spirit of Vanderlaan...

SO grateful and happy to be back, Pam!

The inspiration for this novel came from one of my students before I retired as a psychology professor. We had just learned that he lived in a dorm room that I had lived in as a student. He and I agreed that a novel in which all the students who hang out in their favorite professor’s office mysteriously live in her former rooms would be great fun as they unravel how and why this “coincidence” happened. Since that student was an excellent writer, I suggested he write the story. He said he didn’t have the time and that I should write it. I dismissed the idea as nonsense – Me? A fiction writer? But when I couldn’t shake the idea, I wrote it.

I am now retired from teaching and working on the sequel!

Oh how fun! Give us more please...

Sure, here is the Blurb: When Samantha and her students uncover a campus death, they must draw on everything from science to seances to learn what happened before Samantha gets fired for “dabbling in the paranormal.”

And an Excerpt: Samantha reached out to hold Chess's shaking hand only to immediately regret it. The stickiness of dried blood would have made her recoil, but she refused to desert Chess, who squeezed her hand like a frightened child. So while Allie returned Chess’s skates and answered the questions of concerned friends, Samantha stayed put. She only hoped the pounding of her own heart would not attract attention and require an explanation.

After Chess’s wound was cleaned and bandaged, Allie stated that she would drive Chess to the ER. "I can't ride in your new car. My clothes are all -" She grimaced at her blood-stained shirt.

"The blood's dry. It'll be fine. Besides, think how fast my car will get us there." She directed Chess's attention away from the injury.

Samantha pointed to Allie. "Keep it under the limit, missy." Samantha disliked conceding the role of caregiver to someone else, but Allie had things under control. Besides, it couldn't be helped.

Samantha quickly walked toward the women’s restroom, which, thankfully, was empty, went in, and locked the door. With deep, shaky breaths, and no longer fighting the tears, Samantha moved immediately to the sink where she scrubbed her hands vigorously, several times. She reached into her purse for her cell phone, scrolled quickly through her contacts, and tapped her thumb on the one she sought.

She took a deep breath when instructed to leave a message. “Debra, this is Samantha Hayes. Could you give me a call please? I need to talk to you.” She waited a moment, decided she had said all she needed to for now, then added, “Thanks,” before ending the call.

She continued to hold her cell, however, as she paced, all the while trying her best to take even, measured breaths. Think of something else. You’ve washed your hands. You’re safe. You'll talk to Debra when she calls back. Breathe. She was surprised that her reaction was this intense. The sight of blood had not frightened her this much in a long time.

As she debated whether to stay or go home to await Debra’s call, her cell rang, making her jump. With another shaky breath and a sigh of relief, she answered. “Debra? Thanks for calling… Okay… actually, no I’m not okay. I hate to bother you, but something just happened.”

Cool! Now how about the lowdown on you and where we can get a copy of The Spirit of Vanderlaan...

#SaturdaySpotlight is on @KalbMarple Kathleen Marple Kalb!

Good Morning Friends,

Well it's turned cold again but that's not unexpected (although not welcomed by me LOL!). I've always said no matter how warm it may get, there's a cool/cold snap around Easter. Let's see how long this one will last.

Our guest today has visited as herself and her alias, Nikki Knight. On Kathleen's last visit she shared with us book 2 of her Ella Shane Mystery series. Today we'll get a look at books 1 & 3.

Welcome, Kathleen!

First up is A Fatal Finale, book 1....

On the cusp of the twentieth century, Manhattan is a lively metropolis buzzing with talent. But after a young soprano meets an untimely end on stage, can one go-getting leading lady hit the right notes in a case of murder?

New York City, 1899. When it comes to show business, Gilded Age opera singer Ella Shane wears the pants. The unconventional diva breaks the mold by assuming “trouser roles”—male characters played by women—and captivating audiences far and wide with her travelling theatre company. But Ella’s flair for the dramatic takes a terrifying turn when an overacting Juliet to her Romeo drinks real poison during the final act of Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi.

Weeks after the woman’s death is ruled a tragic accident, a mysterious English duke arrives in Greenwich Village on a mission. He’s certain someone is getting away with murder, and the refined aristocrat won’t travel back across the Atlantic until Ella helps him expose the truth.

As Ella finds herself caught between her craft and a growing infatuation with her dashing new acquaintance, she’s determined to decode the dark secrets surrounding her co-star’s fatale finale—before the lights go dark and the culprit appears for an encore . . .

Book 2 A Fatal First Night can be seen HERE. Now for a peek at Book 3, A Fatal Overature

During the first winter of the twentieth century, Gilded Age trouser diva Ella Shane refuses to dim the lights on her dazzling show business career for marriage—even to a dashing British duke. But the versatile mezzo-soprano may have to put it all on the line once murder takes centerstage . . .

New York City, 1900. Renowned opera singer and theatre company owner Ella may have both much to gain and much to lose by getting engaged to her courtly long-distance love, Gil Saint Auburn. But there’s little time for romance or resolutions with Gil’s aristocratic mother and aunts visiting Greenwich Village—especially when the ladies discover a dead man in the bathtub of their hotel suite.

The victim’s disturbing background and subsequent demise at the elegant Waverly Place Hotel leave the group puzzled beyond the obvious certainty of an unnatural death. Adding to the confusion and mounting fear, danger explodes through Ella’s close-knit circle after a friend makes a stunning confession and Gil becomes a fresh target for violence.

Now, with a London tour run fast approaching, prenuptial worries weighing heavily on her heart, and an intricate Joan of Arc aria to rehearse, can Ella decide what she’s willing to sacrifice before confronting a relentless criminal bent on watching her entire life go up in smoke?

Kathleen Marple Kalb grew up in front of a microphone, and a keyboard. She’s now a weekend morning anchor at 1010 WINS New York, capping a career begun as a teenage DJ in Brookville, Pennsylvania. #SaturdaySpotlight is on Kathleen Marple Kalb AKA Nikki Knight @NikkiKnightVT

Good Morning,

It's Bayou Writers Group meeting day so I won't take up much of your time! I'll just welcome today's guest, Kathleen Marple Kalb AKA Nikki Knight back with her latest book, Live, Local and Dead. Take it away Nikki....

LIVE, LOCAL, AND DEAD follows New York City DJ Jaye Jordan’s new start at a tiny Vermont radio station, after her husband survives cancer but their marriage doesn’t. She thinks she’s got enough trouble with protests because she replaced angry talk with love songs…and then the talk show host turns up dead in a snowman in front of the station. Plus, her second-chance romance with her old crush – the governor – turns out to be much more dangerous than either of them expected. Add in a colorful cast of locals, the cranky station cat Neptune, and Charlemagne the Moose, who has flatulence issues…and it’s more fun than anyone should be allowed to have in maple sugaring season.

Excerpt: In the wake of the talk-show host’s death, his producer – who’s trying to take over the show – makes Jaye his new favorite target. Somebody sends her a pipe bomb. Her new flame, Governor Will Ten Broeck comes to the station to comfort Jaye – and she puts on a long song so she has a little time for a hug.

Will took my hand. “You don’t have to be okay for me.”

It was the best thing he could have said. “Thanks. Let me get into MeatLoaf and I’ll take advantage of that.”

As I loaded the CD, and looked at my log to make sure I could run the long song, Neptune, who had somehow slept through all of the family drama, lifted his head and took in the scene. He hopped down from the turntable cabinet, and very deliberately walked over to Will, patting his leg. The two held eye contact for a moment, and then Neptune jumped up into Will’s lap.

“There you go, fella,” Will said, stroking Neptune’s fur as the cat nested comfortably into place. “You’re just fine.”

“What…”

Will grinned at me. “He – he? – knows he’s safe with me. My daughter has always had cats.”

“Neptune doesn’t like anybody but Ryan.”

“And me.” Neptune shot me what sure looked like a smile as he burrowed into Will. I knew, if he didn’t, that kitty was making sure to leave enough hair that the nice suit would need a good cleaning. “Neptune?”

“Ryan’s favorite planet.”

“Makes sense to me.”

I talked up the eight-minute drama with a surprisingly steady voice, and then took the other guest chair, moving it next to Will.

He laughed as he put one arm around me. “The cat’s needs always come first.”

“Yep.”

“Now, c’mere. You know you’re safe too.”

For a while, the only sound other than the low hum of overwrought 70s teen angst was Neptune’s deep, happy purr. Will didn’t say anything, and he didn’t have to.

Nice to be the comfort-ee instead of the comforter. I felt like purring too.

Nikki Knight is the pen name of award-winning New York City radio news anchor Kathleen Marple Kalb. She’s been on the air since she was a teenage DJ in her small Western Pennsylvania hometown, working in newsrooms in Pittsburgh, Vermont, and Connecticut – and never losing her love of radio, or her hatred for snow. She also writes the Ella Shane historical mystery series for Kensington, and her short stories appear in several anthologies. Her Vermont story “Bad Apples” was an Honorable Mention in the 2021 Black Orchid Novella Contest. She, her husband, and their son live in a Connecticut house owned by their cat.

#SaturdaySpotlight is on Terry Korth Fischer @terryIsWriting & Gone Astray

Hello Again,

Yes, it is an unusual thing to have 2 spotlights on the same day but after a sincere email and proof that she DID send her information (which I NEVER Received!) I must apologize and ask forgiveness from My GUEST who was scheduled to appear and YOU my reader friends.

Please forgive me for venting my frustration earlier and please know Terry, my comments were not directed to you alone. This happens All. The. Time.

Thank you for understanding and Thank You for following up!!!

Now, please introduce us to your book....

A heart attack sends detective Rory Naysmith reeling. Too young to retire, he accepts a position in small-town Winterset, Nebraska. Handed an unsolved truck hijacking case, with the assistance of a rookie, Rory sets out to prove he is still able to go toe-to toe with younger men. When the body of a Vietnam veteran turns up, he dons his fedora and spit-shines his shoes. But before he can solve the murder, an older woman disappears, followed closely by a second hijacking. He doggedly works the cases, following a thread that ties the two crimes together.  But can Rory find the mental and physical strength to up his game and bring the criminals to justice before disaster strikes?

Excerpt:

Sunny's voice burst through the intercom, rife with excitement. "Holy schmoley, Chief. We got a live dead one!" Her voice filled the chief's office. "You got Naysmith in there? He needs—"

Rory's heart jumped. Dead body?

Chief Mansfield grabbed the phone, cutting Sunny's voice off. "What ya got?"

While Mansfield listened, Rory checked the department cell at his hip. One call, Sunny. Crap. His first chance, and he'd almost missed it. His mind started to whirl.

The chief's hooded eyes turned to Rory. "I'll send him right out. Get Thacker on the horn. We'll need him to run Naysmith to the scene." He slammed the receiver down.

"It's the senior care home. The boys found a body in the vacant lot. They say you better take a look." His face lit with excitement. "This could be just what we need."

Rory felt his pulse ratchet up. "Who's Thacker? He the rookie you were talking about?"

Mansfield rose and began to pace behind the desk. "The boys responded to a call. Thought something looked funny and turned up a body in a pile of leaves. Sunny has the details. I want you out there."

"Thacker?" Rory asked, rising as well.

"Yeah, Thacker. No time to clear you for a city car. He can run you out and then stick around to assist."

"I'm on it, Chief."

Rory stopped at his office for his hat and the newspaper. He secured the door and entered the dispatch office to find Powell handling the duty desk and Sunny seated at her computer. On the bank of security monitors, he noticed a police unit pull into the back lot. "What ya got, Sunny?"

"I got Thacker waiting. I got the boys out at the care home with a dead body. And I got a headache."

"Right. I'll get the details from the lead officer."

He couldn't move fast enough.

#SaturdaySpotlight is on Joanne Guidoccio @JoanneGuidoccio & No More Secrets!

Good Morning!

Looks like it'll be another rainy day here in SWLA but we can always hope, right? Been a crazy week with two funerals and a quick trip to Toledo Bend to pick up the camper. Got in a little fishing, only caught enough for supper but hey, "our daily bread" right?

Today's guest is brand new to our blog so please welcome Joanne Guidoccio with her book, No More Secrets!

Angelica Delfino takes a special interest in the lives of her three nieces, whom she affectionately calls the daughters of her heart. Sensing that each woman is harboring a troubling, possibly even toxic secret, Angelica decides to share her secrets—secrets she had planned to take to the grave. Spellbound, the nieces listen as Angelica travels back six decades to reveal an incredulous tale of forbidden love, tragic loss, and reinvention. It is the classic immigrant story upended: an Italian widow’s transformative journey amid the most unlikely of circumstances.

Inspired by Angelica’s example, the younger women share their “First World” problems and, in the process, set themselves free.

But one heartbreaking secret remains untold...

Excerpt

“Go,” Kelly said. “Your aunt is dying, and this could be your last opportunity to spend some quality time together.”

“Her oncologist shared good news last week,” Nora said. “Her blood counts have improved, and the cancer hadn’t spread since her last visit. He mumbled something about a miracle.”

“A miracle?” Kelly’s eyes widened. “Has your aunt been seeing a healer?”

“You could say that,” Nora said as her eyes twinkled. “Right after Christmas, she hired a companion who’s been able to transform her life. I don’t know her real name. My mother calls her Bellastrega—beautiful witch.” All recent conversations with Ma had focused on Bellastrega. Relieved not to have to share her own problems, Nora had encouraged her mother to talk about the beautiful witch who had turned all their lives upside down. Nora enjoyed the weekly updates that sounded like soap operas.

“Is she a beautiful witch?”

Nora shrugged. “My mother mentioned her dyed-blonde hair, too-skinny body, and watery eyes. She’s put Zia on a vegan diet and an exercise regimen. At Christmas, Zia needed a walker to get around, but now she’s walking freely. My mother and aunt are convinced that Bellastrega is a witch who’ll end up robbing Angelica and leaving.” Nora had tried to point out that if Bellastrega’s intention was to steal, it would make more sense to let Angelica get weaker.

“She sounds intriguing,” Kelly said. “I’d go just to meet this woman.”

“Hmm. I guess.” Nora was curious and wouldn’t mind sitting and chatting with the woman about wellness. But from Zia Angelica’s email, it sounded like Bellastrega would leave soon after everyone arrived.

“Think of it as an adventure. How many beautiful witches have you met in this lifetime?”

In 2008, Joanne Guidoccio took advantage of early retirement and launched a second act as a writer. Her articles and book reviews have been published in newspapers, magazines, and online. When she tried her hand at fiction, she made reinvention a recurring theme in her novels and short stories.

A member of Crime Writers of Canada, Sisters in Crime, and Women’s Fiction Writers Association, Joanne writes paranormal romances, cozy mysteries, and inspirational literature from her home base of Guelph, Ontario.

Wonderful to meet you Kathleen! Please tell us about your book... A Fatal First Night....

A FATAL FIRST NIGHT opens with a murder in Richard III’s dressing room after the premiere of the Ella Shane Opera Company’s new production, The Princes in the Tower, featuring the trouser diva and her favorite singing partner as the evil king’s young victims.  Though their colleague seems guilty, Ella and friends aren’t too sure about that. Meanwhile, newspaper reporter Hetty MacNaughten has finally escaped hats to cover a sensational murder trial. Before it’s over, the cast will have to sort out several interlocking mysteries, welcome an unexpected visitor…and find another Richard III. Will everyone survive to the final curtain?

Excerpt

Ella already has enough on her hands with the new show, the backstage killing, and the murder trial her friend is covering -- when her British beau, Gilbert Saint Aubyn, Duke of Leith, appears unexpectedly at her home. They reunite with a fencing match, and over the swords, the topic very quickly turns to an unexpected embrace in their last misadventure:

“I am still, however, considering the appropriate response to that assault upon my honor, Miss Shane.”

“Really.” I almost missed the parry again at his direct reference to my pulling him into a kiss after I swung to safety. I still don’t know what came over me, other than playing the swashbuckling hero in the moment. Which, I guess, would make him the fair maiden. “Well, it was a truly terrible offense, Your Grace.”

“Indeed. So awful an insult I haven’t been able to forget it.”

His voice was light and teasing, but his eyes burned into mine. The kiss, my first and only, had been entirely inappropriate and wrong, of course. But amazing.

“Ah.” I smiled a little and backed him off. “Well, I suppose I shall have to pay the price for my rash actions.”

“You could be facing a life sentence.”

“I’m not sure I want clemency.” Parry.

“What do you want, Shane?” Attack.

“What do you?”

I could have launched one more attack and cornered him, and he knew it. But the duel was now beside the point.

“Draw?” I offered.

“Someday, I will prevail.”

“Perhaps.”

We bowed and stood there for a long moment, eyes locked. My braid had come loose during the match, and he reached over and gently touched the falling curls, carefully pushing back a stray bit. His thumb rested on my cheekbone, the warmth of his skin soaking into mine, the electricity between us practically a wall of crackling blue fire…

Get A Fatal First Night through Kensington Books.

Sounds like an exciting tale, Kathleen! We certainly appreciate you sharing in the spotlight today and wish you good luck and God's blessings with your writing.

#SaturdaySpotlight is on Wendy Kendall @wendywrites1 & Kat Out of the Bag!

Good Morning and Welcome to the final Saturday Spotlight of February 2021!

I am SO happy to say we've weathered the Winter storm and are enjoying nice, mild days with temps ranging from the 50's - 70's... my kind of weather! A little more rain than I like, but hey, spring is certainly on the way.

Today's as visited before so please give Wendy Kendall a huge round of applause as she shares with us her book, Kat Out of the Bag.....

My fingers tremble in delightful anticipation as I write because it's a privilege to appear in award winning author Pamela Thibodeaux's spotlight. Pamela's novels entertain, enlighten and encourage today's women. In my cozy mysteries I'm inspired by the extraordinary actions of ordinary women. Four generations join in the investigation in Kat Out of the Bag when purse designer/amateur sleuth Katherine Watson is confronted with a murder that hits too close to home.
Katherine is opening Purse-Onality: a women's history purse museum. Purses show amazing insight into the lives of the women who carried them. At Katherine's gala opening, the town mayor is murdered.  Working to solve the mystery, Katherine matches wits with local cop Jason Holmes and his K-9 partner Hobbs. They disagree often, but discover an undeniable attraction. Katherine's mother and grandmother provide helpful perspectives into clues. Young college student Amber who manages the museum gift shop, aids in the investigation. They'll have to focus their efforts and combine forces to find that killer before Katherine becomes the next knock off.

Her great grandmother had survived a London bombing in the basement of a store in the rubble of a building and was able to crawl out between destroyed buildings on either side, despite her fears. A shiver curved all the way around Katherine's baent spine. Self-confidence was what got her through hard times. She could find the right answer to every situation through persistence, hard work, creativity and luck. Why was she giving up? . . .
Thank goodness for bargain priced old locks. She reattached the chain and pushed her purse behind her hip so it could rest on her back. Katherine had never been so grateful for freedom. She breathed deep, happy. That's when the lights went on in the room. Katherine froze. What she focused on first was the gun.

#WednesdayWordswithFriends Welcomes Wendy Kendall @wendywrites1

Whew! The title of this post is a tongue twister for sure LOL!

Today's guest is brand new so please give Wendy a huge, SWLA W-E-L-C-O-M-E....

A Passion For Purses & The Stories Of The Women Who've Carried Them

I have reveled in a passion for purses many years. I enjoy all kinds. You name it and I'll claim it. My curiosity and wildly growing peronal collection led me to investigate the world of purses. That resulted in my new mystery novel Kat Out of the Bag, introducing Katherine Watson celebrated international purse designer and amateur sleuth.

Why do women love purses? I had my suspicions, of course. I followed many clues. I devoured everything there was to read about designers. I researched art appreciation. But it was when I interviewed every day women about their favorite purse, and learned about their incredible lives and families that's when I knew I was hot on the trail to uncovering the mystery of a passion for purses.

I met with a variety of women who enjoy purses. Their favorite purse, the one they told me all about,  was often a special gift, maybe a family member, loved one, friend, or mentor. Sometimes their purse was a style similar to another woman's who they'd known. Often it evoked a cherished memory, like an aunt who had a purse pocket with surprise candy treats for kids. There was a sisterhood here.

For some women their favorite purse represented a cause that they supported wholeheartedly. They were wearing their heart on their arm, or sometimes crossbody.

No matter how contemporary, these stories had roots in history. Yes, a woman's purse tells a story, that's unique and at the same time shared. The final piece of the puzzle fell into place. I traveled from Seattle, Washington to Little Rock, Arkansas to visit one of only three purse museums in the world – Esse. The ESSE Purse Museum does not simply showcase accessories. It makes HERstory tangible and familiar. ESSE is focused on honoring women, artisans and the stories that make us unique and connected.

Mystery solved! And my novel underway, about Katherine Watson the purse designer. She creates purses because it was a passion that her great grandmother had shared with her when she was a young child. It was then she learned  inside every purse there's a treasured story of the woman who carried it, and those stories are important. When Katherine ends up temporarily back in her hometown of Bayside, she decides to create a purse museum in honor of her great grandmother, and all the women who's stories would be told in the exhibits. Never did she imagine that the mayor would be murdered at the Gala Opening.

My character Moonjava is a fan of the hippies of the 1960's. She's also the museum historian. She loves the idea of showcasing history in creative exhibits. She shares a daily meditation with anyone who will listen, often with interesting repercussions.

Amber is the college student who manages the museum gift shop. She's a wristlet gal. She stumbles on her own cold case mystery when she and her boyfriend Michael find a note in a donated vintage purse.

While Michael and Amber partner on their cold case, Katherine finds herself investigating the murder with, and sometimes at odds with local cop Jason Holmes and his K-9 partner Hobbs. Jason ends up learning some things about purses as the mystery deepens.

I wrote Kat Out of the Bag for the fun of mysteries, for the fun of creating the characters, for the women who are making history right now, and to honor memories of the women who have gone before.

Wendy Kendall has a passion for purses and stories of the women through history who carried them. Esse Purse Museum

When celebrated international purse designer Katherine Watson hosts a gala for her Purse-onality Museum, she never expected the next day's headline to read: 'Murder at the Gala Prmiere.' But after a dead body is found during the event, that's exactly what happened.

Working to solve the murder, Katherine matches wits with local cop Jason Holmes and his K-9 partner Hobbs. Although Holmes and Watson disagree often, they discover an undeniable attraction building between them. But they'll have to put their feelings on hold and focus on solving the murder, before Katherine becomes the killer's next knock off.

Excerpt -

“There's an officer nearby. We'll alert him. Hold the line.”

Katherine was worried by the operator's monotone. Did she understand the urgency? Katherine watched in disbelief as the shadow figure moved toward the shed attached to the waterwheel. Too late, she thought to get a picture after the person disappeared inside the shed.

“Oh no,” Katherine muttered. She spoke into the phone, “Hurry, I think it's the killer, maybe looking for something left behind? Hello?” Had the operator hung up?

“Yes, the officer is on the way. Please stay on the line.” The operator's voice now sounded bored.

A sharp ray of light from inside the shed cut through the darkness. The light jumped around. Sweat collected on Katherine's upper lip as she imagined the killer looking through her things for something, maybe critical evidence. Fear gave way to irritation at the invasion. Irritation gave way to anger. Someone had to stop that killer from removing whatever incriminating thing was so critical it had driven a return to the scene of the crime. Katherine wanted to scream. Where were the police? Maybe MJ was right about them. She pressed against the french doors. The light in the shed went out. Her breath caught in her throat. The silhouette walked out of the shed toward the alley leading to the maze that burrowed throughout Bayside and beyond.

Katherine spoke gruffly and fast, “Hello. Where's your officer? The suspect is getting away.”

“Ma'am, please stay calm and hang on the line. They're on the way.”

Katherine unlocked the door to the yard and whispered to the 911 operator, “I'm in pursuit.”

#SaurdaySpotlight is on Lillian Duncan & All I Want for Christmas is Johnny Rocker Dead!

Good Morning!

There are only a couple of days left in my Grateful contest. If you haven't entered, it's simple. Just leave a comment on the FB event of what you're grateful for and you'll be in the drawing for a 'Grateful Box'!

If you search for Lillian Duncan, you'll see she is no stranger our blog, so please give her a great, big Welcome Back....

Murder, Mayhem & Christmas?

Every year my publisher puts on a Christmas Extravaganza! I love that word—extravaganza. It’s fun to say. Anyway…what’s a Christmas Extravaganza? My publisher releases a group of novellas with a Christmas theme and for a certain time they’re only 99 cents!

How’s that for an extravaganza?

Murder, Mayhem & Christmas? Really?

On the surface, it may seem that murder and mayhem doesn’t necessarily go with Christmas, but I love weaving a Christmas story in with suspense and romance. I have several Christmas stories available—The Christmas Stalking; The Christmas Angel Thief; No Home for the Holidays; and A Christmas Stolen.

This year’s new Christmas novella is ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS JOHNNY ROCKER DEAD!

How’s that for a title filled with murder, mayhem, & Christmas?

Johnny Rocker considers himself a rock and roll god and therefore, he doesn’t need God. But as with all of us, God has a way of getting our attention when he wants it.

Maddie Cotton’s plan for Christmas are simple. She’s quitting her bodyguard job because it’s time for a change in her life. But one simple word changes those plans—Nineveh.

So exactly how does God get Johnny Rocker’s attention and what does Nineveh have to do with it? You’ll have to read the book to find out.

I won’t tell you the plot but I will tell you that story is about how much God loves each of us—no matter what we’ve done. And isn’t that what Christmas is really all about?

Merry Christmas to all!

Lillian Duncan…turning faith into fiction.

Even though her books cross genres, they have one thing in common, faith-based stories that show God’s love—and lots of action. OK—that’s two things. She believes in the power of words to change lives, especially God’s Word.

Lillian is a multi-published writer with several Amazon bestsellers, including The Christmas Stalking and Betrayed. Lillian writes the types of books she loves to read—fast-paced suspense with a touch or two of romance that demonstrates God’s love for all of us

Whether as an educator, a writer, or a speech pathologist, she believes in the power of words to transform lives, especially God’s Word.

#SaturdaySpotlight is on Zaida Alfaro & The Last Note a Miami Music Mystery

Good Morning from Monroe, Louisiana!

Yep, on another short vacation but this time staying close to home. My gentleman friend's grandson is playing in the Dixie League World Series. They live in SC so it is rare to have them in LA and we're looking forward to a fun-filled week.

Our guest today is new to me and the blog so please welcome Zaida Alfaro with her cozy mystery, The Last Note: A Miami Music Mystery....

Killer songs and a killer voice, but a killer at her gig?  Vy has always found herself at the center of attention as the lead singer for one of Miami's top cover bands, but when she finds herself at the center of a murder investigation, while performing at the Steel Horse Bar, that changes the tune of the night. Someone believes that Vy knows the truth behind the murder of the bar owner Ricky, and now that person is after her. Vy better figure out quickly who wanted Ricky dead, who is threatening her with her favorite band’s song lyrics, and why she’s falling for the handsome Detective Houston, before she too sings her last note. With a mixture of mystery, mayhem and comedy, you will find yourself immersed in Vy's musical and murderous world.

Excerpt: The bar was alive tonight. Vy was feeding off the positive energy that was generated throughout each table, each person. That energy replenished her soul. The crowd sang along with Vy to “Sweet Child of Mine.” Carlos went into the song’s notorious, edgy guitar solo.

The women stood in front of him going ballistic. Vy belted out the chorus while she was on her knees in front of Carlos’ guitar.

“Yeah! Give it up for Carlos!” Vy shouted into the microphone.

The song ended, and it was time for Vy to take a break. Rob was going to take over, and sing a few more songs. As she walked down the steps, Vy noticed that her martini had disappeared. Shawn walked up to her, “Vy, that was awesome!” Shawn turned her into mush.

“Thanks. You know, if you want to play a song, I’m sure that Carlos will let you use his guitar.” His smile was vibrant, but it was soon cut off when Ricky approached them. Ricky had the tendency to ruin Shawn’s every amazing smile.

“I know, get back to work,” Shawn said mimicking him.

“Good boy,” Ricky responded. Vy could tell Ricky had been drinking already, just by the tone of his voice. “I tell you, if he keeps slacking, he’s gone.”

“He was just telling me how great we sounded, relax.” Apparently, that was the wrong thing to say. His eyes dilated, and his lips were about to say something to Vy, but Tina emerged next to her like an angel.

“Hi, Ricky,” she said. “You’re not giving my best girl here a hard time, are you?”

“Hi, Tina.” His entire demeanor changed. She had him salivating.

“Um, no. I was just going to offer you ladies a drink on the house. By the way, Vy, I drank that martini you left by the monitor. You shouldn’t leave your drink unattended, could be dangerous. You’re lucky that I drank it.” Ricky laughed. “Anyway, you want another one?”

Sure, you jerk, was what she thought, but what Vy said was, “Sure, thanks.”

“How about you, beautiful? You want to have a shot with me?” Ricky asked Tina.

“I will have a shot, but I already promised Vy I’d have it with her. Next time, sweetie,” Tina grinned. Ricky didn’t even realize that Tina was belittling him.

He caught himself staring at Tina and quickly snapped out of it. “Kendra! Get these ladies what they want!” Ricky stormed off to the office without saying another word.

“Jerk,” Tina muttered as they walked back to the table. “How do you deal with that crap?”

“I usually don’t. He usually isn’t here when we play. But thanks for saving me.”

“Honey, I saw that look you give when you’re ready to kick someone in the gut. I wanted to save that man from excruciating pain.”

“Was it that obvious?” Vy asked.

“Big time.”

Kendra came over with two martinis and two shots. “Here you go, girls.”

“Sorry that he gave you attitude,” Vy said.

“Oh, sweetie, that’s normal around here.” Kendra smiled. “Let me know if you need anything else. Enjoy.”

“Now, let’s drink to friendship,” Tina said.

“Here’s to friendship.” As they raised their glasses, they heard a loud scream, over Rob’s Led Zeppelin song. Cassandra hysterically came out of the office, and ran over to Kyle yelling, “He’s dead, Kyle. He’s dead!”

Oh wow, Zaida! What an excerpt and your cover is lovely. We certainly wish you the best of luck and God's blessings with it. Please tell us a little about yourself....

The Last Note’s main backdrop, the amazing city of Miami, Florida, is beloved and well-known to me. I was born and raised in Miami, and like the novel’s main character Vy, I am a singer/songwriter, as well as the lead singer to a self-proclaimed cover band. All things relating to music or literature are my passion. I keep a journal, and I am constantly writing poems, stories, and any thought that comes to mind. I have a fascination for black and white films, that have the element of mystery. As I have been told by many, I have a very creative imagination.

Many years ago, I became an avid reader of cozy mysteries. The story lines were intriguing, engaging, and funny at the same time. I was so inspired by the authors, that I then decided to take my musical experiences, and put it on paper. I began writing this first novel in 2009. In between my full-time job, my weekend gigs, and my personal life, I finally completed the novel. The phobia's, the dream sequences, and the quirkiness of the main characters, are all based on facts. I hope that I was able to bring the love I have for Miami, the Cuban culture, my family, and music, to the readers of my novel, and to the series to come.

#SaturdaySpotlight is on M. E. Bakos & Deadly Flip!

Good Morning!

A busy day today here in SW Louisiana with Bayou Writers Group meetings and Angel Girl's dance competition but as they say...the show (or in our case, spotlight) must go on!

I introduced M. E. Bakos back in Feb when she shared treasures with us and again in last month when she shared some thoughts so please welcome her back with a peek into her book, Deadly Flip.

Flipping houses can be deadly!

Katelyn takes on a home renovation in Hiptown, Minnesota, that “has history . . . a murder” at BFF Myra’s urging. What was she thinking? Besides the young woman being killed by the home’s prior owner, she learns the girl didn’t get the justice she deserved. Because of a double jeopardy ruling, the killer got away with murder!

Katelyn finds a hidden diary, foils an intruder, and discovers more secrets while delays and expenses escalate as she renovates the house. Could the victim’s restless spirit be haunting the house, making it the rehab from hell? Can she find peace and justice for the dead woman? To get the renovation back on track, Katelyn, Myra, ex-hubby Eddy (it’s complicated), and handyman Wayne hold a sΓ©ance and bring in paranormal investigators. Will this finally rid the house of bad karma?

To top it off, Eddy is acting just plain weird, and hunky Sheriff Don Williams is a puzzle. Nosy neighbor, Mrs. Gilman, and Boots, the rescue cat, add to the fun in the second Home Renovator Mystery.

Enjoy a short excerpt from DEADLY FLIP:

What the heck!” I tugged at the edge of a board in the bottom of the window seat in the
second-floor bedroom of my home renovation project. This was my third project in my new
profession as a Home Rehab Specialist. I had bought the house at auction a couple of weeks
earlier and was in the midst of the remodel.

“What?” Myra Alexandria Payten asked, and poked her head out of the closet she’d been dusting. She wore a blue denim shirt with sleeves rolled at the cuffs and matching jeans and sported the kind of casual work shoes that cost a fortune. Her highlighted hair was freshly styled. She was humoring me with cleaning.

The house was a couple of blocks from where Myra lived. She was a staunch supporter of my new occupation. It was with her encouragement, I’d decided to become a home flipper after I was canned. Myra had a passion for home improvement projects and renewing houses. She had her projects done. Me, not so much. She lived in one of the stately mansions facing the “couples” lake in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It was one of three lakes in the Hiptown area. One lake was known as the “singles” lake, another known as the “family” lake.

She had been over-the-top thrilled when I told her about the house.

“It’s a wonderful house, Katelyn! A great opportunity,” she’d gushed.

“But, I do renovations in Crocus Heights.”

“This is a perfect opportunity to expand your horizon. Besides, it’s a great deal.”

“How do you know?”

“My brother told me the house was up for sale.”

“Really? The chief of police follows foreclosures at auction?”

“This one is special. It has a history.”

“History?”

“There was an incident, a murder....” As her voice trailed off, she coughed and avoided my stare.
“Myra, I don’t need bad karma.”

“The actual murder took place in the garage. The body is gone. No body. No bad karma.” She sounded evasive and a little flip. My guard was up.

“I wouldn’t be too sure about that,” I said, my eyes narrowed, considering Myra.

“I’d like you to renovate the house, Katelyn.” She studied me, her gaze steady, serious.

“Why don’t you renovate the house?” I countered. It wasn’t like Myra to push a project. It was weird, especially after my experience with a dead body in my first renovation.

“I’m not the expert that you are in home renovation,” she said firmly.
What could I say?

My name is Katelyn Baxter. Most people call me Kate or Katie. I am a Home Rehabilitation Specialist, or a house flipper. It is my passion.

Wow, M. E., sounds like the makings of Hallmark Movies and Mysteries series! Good luck and God's blessings with your books.

Deadly Flip and Fatal Flip can be purchased at Amazon and you can find out more about M. E by visiting her  website and friending her on Facebook, M. E. Bakos, Author or Email her at: mebakos@yahoo.com.

Hope you enjoyed today's spotlight and will check back weekly for more great books and authors!

Until next time, take care and God bless.
