#SaturdaySpotlight is on Donna B. Snow and Past, Present & Future: Why Everyone Should Read the Bible

Good Morning and Welcome to another edition of Saturday Spotlight.

It's been a long, long while since our guest today visited the blog so please extende your warmest greetings to Donna B. Snow with her new, nonfiction book, Past, Present, and Future Why Everyone Should Read the Bible.

Thanks for joining us, Donna! Please tell us why you wrote this book...

2024 was a very unsettling year for all of us. The world was getting ever darker. Ir was getting harder and harder to tell right from wrong, and there didn’t seem to be much hope to be found.

I’ve read my Bible cover to cover several times and I know the end will come one day, but with everything that was going on I truly felt like the end was near

A Christian coworker introduced me to a couple of prophecy preachers and I started listening to them, one of whom is from Israel. After listening we would discuss what was going on in the world and how everything was pointing toward the end times.

This book is actually dedicated to those preachers (as well as my friend) for opening my eyes to prophecy, as well as to a few select people who have led me closer to God and to understanding how special the Bible is – and just how important it is to all of us.

I felt a strong tug on my heart during that time, to share that message, to help other people to see  the Bible for what it truly is, a guidebook into the future.

The God who knows past, present, and future, has mapped it all out for us, even gave us markers and guideposts in time. They’re all in the book!

My book is just a glimpse of what can be found in His Word.

~ ~ ~

Wow, Interesting! I know there is a lot in the Bible about the end times and it's always good to hear someone else's opinion on that topic. Can we get a peek into the book?

Sure, here's the Blurb: Are you worried about everything that’s happening in the world today? Wars and rumors of wars all around the world…are you wondering if things will ever get better? Is World War III coming? Will the USA survive? And if not, what will the world be like?

Believe it or not, there’s a book that was written almost two thousand years ago that tells of things that have happened in the past as well as what’s going to happen in the future.

That book is the Bible. It isn’t about religion; it’s about the Creator’s love for us.

God’sWord is a guidebook to help us live the best lives we can. His mercy and love are strong enough to carry us through.

Past, Present, and Future is a glimpse into the message He has for you.

Excerpt: Should you read the Bible? The answer to that is ABSOLUTELY!
The Bible was a gift, written to help us understand the world we live in and get to know the God who loves us.

*******

Why should you read the Bible?
Because the Bible is the only way you will ever understand this world, even your own life.
This book has many facets. It is a book of history, a guidebook for our lives—and a hope for the future.

~ ~ ~

Thank You, Donna! Now tell us a little about yourself...

I’m a native New Englander, and I love the change of seasons, although I love winter less and less as it seems to get longer each year. But you can’t beat the beauty of fall colors, or the smell of things coming to life in spring. I’d love to have you join me in this, the springtime of my writing.

I write inspirational romances and women’s fiction, as well as Christian music.

Find out more by visiting my website and connecting with me on Facebook and Instagram.

Thank You for visiting with us today, Donna! We wish you the best of luck and God's blessings with your new book.

Hope you enjoyed today's spotlight, Friends. Past Present and Future can be purchased at Amazon and you can check out Donna's previous posts HERE.

Until next time, take care, God Bless and happy reading!

#WednesdayWordswithFriends Welcomes @FayFaylamb Fay Lamb!

Good Morning Dear Friends,

Well I drove back from Nacogdoches yesterday and ran errands before even setting foot in my house. Alas, the life of a traveler LOL! My son's dance teams did rather well in the two national competitions they competed in. I'll share more on that later. But now, let me introduce to you a brand-new-to-our-blog guest, Fay Lamb!

Fay Lamb is the only daughter of a rebel genius father and a hard-working, tow-the-line mom. She is not only a fifth-generation Floridian, she has lived her life in Titusville, where her grandmother was born in 1899.

Since an early age, storytelling has been Fay’s greatest desire. She seeks to create memorable characters that touch her readers’ hearts. She says of her writing, “If I can’t laugh or cry at the words written on the pages of my manuscript, the story is not ready for the reader.” Fay writes in various genres, including romance, romantic suspense, and contemporary fiction.

If you’d like to catch up with Fay, visit her at her website, on Amazon, Goodreads, and Twitter @FayFaylamb. Also, Fay has become a “novel” gardener, and she shares her adventure in her newsletter, Tales from the Azalea Garden. You can sign up for her newsletter, Tales from the Azalea Garden, here.

So nice to have you share with us today, Fay!

The Solitude of the Garden

“The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for them, and the desert shall rejoice and blossom as the rose.” Isaiah 35:1

In July of 2021, I came out of the coma that had beset the world. I peeked out of my front window, and I was horrified at what I saw. What I found was a long-neglected front yard of which an azalea garden comprises seventy-five percent. Virginia Creeper, a foul phrase in my opinion, had climbed atop the struggling and dying azaleas. Oak trees towered unchecked amongst weeds large enough to be shrubs. The whole yard was a disaster of my own making.

I pushed open my front door and stepped outside to the beauty I had abused by not keeping evil—yes, pure evil—in check. Starting at one end of the garden, I began to pull weeds and to tug off of plants and up from the ground vines that Tarzan could use to travel from tree to tree.

I began to spend many hours at a time getting to know every nook and cranny of my garden. With every azalea I could save trimmed and the dead and dying shoveled up, the vines pulled, and the weeds taken care of for the moment, I turned my eyes upon the gardens in front of my house and then to the grass itself. I never sought help from family. I worked in solitude.

This solitude brought me into the presence of God where the desert inside of me began to rejoice and blossom like a rose. Oh, I can be in solitude with God anywhere, and I have since learned to seek out that time with God in order to bloom in other places. The garden, though, is where my relationship with God was renewed. God didn’t begin talking with me in the garden, but I began to listen to Him there. His Word came alive in my heart as He taught me many lessons such as how sins can grow and overcome me like the weeds and vines of my garden. As I toiled and gave love to the garden that had seen only indifference from me, I began to draw closer to God, to begin to nourish the relationship I once treasured but to which I had grown indifferent.

And another miracle occurred. I forgot to tell you, that prior to July, 2021, the plant world knew me as a serial killer. While I walked and talked with God in the garden, He blossomed in me the heart of a gardener, someone who loves the plants, nourishes them, and protects them, as God loves, nourishes and protects me.

Today, when I look out of my window, I see the fruit of my labors which were directed by God, and I see the fruit of what God brought to me in my garden where the Master Gardener and the novice gardener meet almost every day.

* * *

What lovely sentiments, Fay. We can all learn from regular solitude with God. THANK You for sharing! Now please share with us a peek of your book, Storms in Serenity which is available on Amazon....

How can one man save the town he loves when he’s the reason for the destruction?

Serenity Key, Florida, has seen its share of hurricanes, but this time, one foul weather system is about to collide with another storm, and this one has nothing to do with atmospheric pressure.

David New has guarded his secrets for years, but when two brothers, John and Andy Ryan, arrive in town and he gets news that the daughter he’s never told anyone about has disappeared, possibly the victim of a heinous crime, and the lives of many of the town residents begin to unravel in the gale force consequences of David’s past, he has nowhere else to turn.

God is the only one Who can calm the storms, but can David and the good folks of Serenity Key survive until He does?

A tempest has been brewing for thirty years, with only one island town in its path.

Sounds like a great read, Fay. We certainly wish you the best of luck and God's blessings with it. One thing you should know, Friends is that Fay donates 100% of her royalties to Christian charities so if you love to read and give, you can do both by purchasing one or more of her books!

That's it for today, folks. Tax deadline is barreling down upon us so I'll be wrapping up mine and getting them filed. So until Saturday....

Take care and God Bless

#WednesdayWordswithFriends Welcomes Sarah Schieber

Good Morning,

It's a chilly one (freezing actually) here in SW Louisiana. I want to say Thank You to all who voted on my new cover for Circles of Fate last week. I appreciate you ALL very much!

Enough about me though. Today's guest is brought to us by Adams PR Service. Please welcome Sarah Schieber as she shares her heart with us....

My husband died in his 30s while running a marathon. In one moment, I was a widow and single mother.  People often ask me how they can help widows cope with the loss of a husband. As a young widow, maintaining a home with things such as mowing a yard, changing furnace filters, or caulking a bathtub was very overwhelming. Those things almost paralyzed me. It was so hard to just keep three kids alive, then add to it jobs that had traditionally been handled by my husband.  I was so mad at the stupid weeds in my yard that I found a really cool sprayer thingy at a garage sale for $2. I marched myself to the grain elevator and bought some extra-strength-kill-anything-it-touches-so-be-really-careful spray. I filled that puppy up and took it out to spray every weed in my yard. Yeah. Great. Until the entire yard was dead! I guess it doesn’t work that way. Who knew?

The truth is, I didn’t WANT to deal with any of that. But now I had to.

Look around and figure out what your friend or loved one might be facing that they dread. Meet those needs for them on a regular and consistent basis. Think about a widow/widower with children. In many homes the ‘other spouse’ takes the kids to buy presents for birthdays, Mother’s/Father’s Day, etc. Now there isn’t an ‘other spouse.’ My kids were 11, 9, and 6 when their daddy died. When Christmas, Mother’s Day, and my birthday rolled around it was a terrible feeling to have to sit on a bench at the mall while my now 12-year-old daughter took her little brothers to pick out gifts for me - with MY money. Rent a fridge and keep it stocked with meals. Volunteer for one night each week to be the driver and take the kids to any lesson or practice they may have.

This is such a beautiful part of being a human and being able to serve someone who hurts. Look around their life. Try to put yourself in their shoes and ask what their toughest tasks must be?

Oh my goodness, Sarah. Although my children were grown, my granddaughter was only 5 when we lost her Papaw so I certainly understand your pain. And the advice you give to those of us who have friends grieving the loss of a loved one is spot on!

Thank you for sharing with us. We certainly wish you the best of luck and God's blessings.

#WednesdayWordswithFriends Welcomes Shelly Genovese-Calhoun

Good Morning Friends,

Well, I'm starting to get and feel caught up after my Alaska trip. As we all know, it's wonderful to go but always blessed to be home.

Today's guest is brought to us by Adams PR Group and I believe her story will inspire all of us so please welcome, Shelly Genovese-Calhoun!

Twenty years after her husband was killed in the North Tower of the World Trade Center on 9/11, Shelly Genovese Calhoun admits that the emotions of that day are still raw as each anniversary draws near. In her book, “Twice Blessed: A Journey of Hope through 9/11,” she shares her painful story of becoming a young widow and single mother to a sixteen-month-old daughter. But she also emphasizes the role her faith played to get her through the darkest days.

“I would not wish upon anyone the pain, heartbreak, and emotional trauma that was thrust upon me when my husband and the father of my little girl died in the twin towers,” says Genovese Calhoun. “Year after year, as the date approaches, my body and mind attempt to go back to that place of fear and terror. I grieve, but not as those who have no hope. My journey of healing since that fateful day has been centered on the freedom from fear that God alone can offer.”

Genovese Calhoun describes how friends and family surrounded her during that time.

“It was very difficult for me to watch life go on as normal, when nothing in my life was normal,” says Genovese Calhoun. “I truly didn’t know how to go on living without him. The body of Christ was so unbelievable to me and prayed me through some unbearable times. More than I ever realized, God was always there. He is there to offer comfort in times of trouble and to give us hope when we feel hopeless. I hid myself in the Lord and I refused to lose faith. In return, my faith grew stronger.”

Genovese Calhoun, who is now remarried, talks candidly in the book about the emotional turmoil of allowing herself to date other men years after her husband’s death.  It is something that is difficult for many widows to contemplate.

“I believed Steve was the love of my life,” says Genovese Calhoun. “I just knew we would spend the rest of our lives together. I think if you’ve ever truly loved someone, you want that love back in your life. I was so afraid to allow myself to love again that I almost lost my chance at finding true love and happiness. But loving someone again doesn’t mean that you ever have to stop loving the other person. God will give you a big enough heart to love both.”

Shelly Genovese Calhoun is an author, speaker, wife and mother. A former fashion model, she represented East Texas in the Miss Texas USA pageant. During her modeling career, she worked for Anne Klein, Neiman Marcus, JCPenney, Panhandle Slim, Dillard and many other notable companies. She resides in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and is married to her best friend, Heath, and their two children. Daughter, Jacqueline, is a senior at Texas A&M University, and son, Cash, is a freshman in high school. For more information, visit www.TwiceBlessed911.com

Read more about Twice Blessed in Shelly's Q&A featured on Adams PR Group and check out the book trailer.

Thank you for sharing with us Shelly! I can certainly relate to being afraid to love again after losing the love of my life.

As 9/11 approaches, let's remember to pray for those so intimately affected by that dark day in our History and to pray for our nation and leaders.

Until next time, take care and God bless.

#SaturdaySpotlight is on Shirley Raye Redmond & Courageous World Changers!

Good Morning and Welcome!

Well the writing retreat in Nacogdoches, TX I talked about on Wednesday was a great time. I doubled my word count on the current WIP. One friend met her goal of 10K words added to hers and the other finished and published a short story as well as added to her overall word count also! I absolutely love getting together with writers to actually write. Of course we took regular breaks to visit and brainstorm or simply get away to rest our minds but then we were right back at it and it paid off. Alas, now we're back to our normal routines juggling life and writing. But hopefully the inspiration will carry us through to completion of our individual projects.

Enough about me though!

Our guest has visited before, both on Wednesday Words with Friends AND in our Spotlight so I'm turning the blog over to her now. Take it away Shirley.....

Faithful Christian women are salt and light in their communities. They all make a difference. But some have such a vibrant faith that—like a stone tossed into a pond— their influence ripples throughout the world. The fifty women included in this book fall into that category. Each took seriously Jesus’ words in Matthew 28:18 that, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”

Blessed with a variety of talents from writing and preaching, to teaching and nursing, these women used their gifts to glorify God. From aviators and athletes to musicians and mathematicians, many of them forged their faith in the fires of persecution, prejudice, and pain.
Several entered the mission field. Others took their faith into the world of politics and medicine. They were (and are) strong, smart, and sometimes outspoken. They recognized Jesus as Lord of everything—from arts and sciences to education and athletics. Brief cameos include Corrie Ten Boom, Mahalia Jackson, Harriet Tubman, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Sabina Wurmbrand and Ni Kwei-Tseng Soong and 44 other inspiring women.

Excerpt: Brave and adventurous at an early age, Elisabeth Elliot was only twelve when she prayed, “Lord, I want you to do anything you want with me.” She attended Wheaton College, where she studied classical Greek, hoping to translate the New Testament for unreached people groups. She married Jim Elliot in 1953. They joined four other families on the mission field in Ecuador.

While living with the peaceful Quecha tribe, Jim attempted to make contact with the Waorani—a violent tribe known for their revenge killings. Neighboring tribes called them Aucas or savages. When Jim and four others were killed, Elisabeth insisted, “This is not a tragedy. God has a plan and purpose in all this.”

Together with Rachel Saint, the sister of one of the murdered missionaries, Elisabeth took her toddler Valerie to the Waorani village, where they lived for two years in a tiny rain swept hut, eating roasted monkey limbs and other local fare. She hoped by forgiving those who’d killed her husband, she might teach them about God’s mercy and grace. Her courageous faith won several in the tribe to Jesus and inspired millions of Christians around the world. When

Elisabeth returned to the United States in 1963, the Waorani were no longer a violent culture. Elisabeth married again and began her speaking ministry across the United States. She also wrote twenty-four books, many of them inspirational bestsellers. Today, the tribe she evangelized continues to grow in the Christian faith.

Amanda Berry Smith
                (1837-1915)
                                      The Orphans’ Champion

Born a slave in Maryland, Amanda was one of thirteen children. Her parents were married, but lived on different plantations. Devout believers, they raised their children to love Jesus. At thirteen, Amanda performed the tasks of a housemaid. She was fifteen when her father purchased her freedom. Together they moved north to Pennsylvania.

Amanda married at seventeen. She endured poverty and hardship. Her husband enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War, but never returned. Four of her five children died as babies. Her second husband died from cancer. Each tragedy drew her closer to God.
When Amanda began her preaching ministry, she joyfully distributed Bible tracts on street corners. She sang at revivals. For forty years, both black and white Christians invited her to preach at their events.

Amanda became instrumental in the Women’s Christian Temperance Union and helped to establish the National Association of the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Despite her popularity, Amanda felt the sting of racism, saying, “I think some people would understand the quintessence of sanctifying grace if they could be black about twenty four hours.”

As her reputation grew, Amanda evangelized in Great Britain and India. She served as a missionary in Liberia in Africa for eight years. After returning to the United States, she raised funds to build an orphanage for destitute black children in 1899 in a small town near Chicago—the first establishment of its kind. She worked tirelessly for the rest of her life to support the orphanage.

Biographies Matter

When I was in 5th grade I read more than 300 library books and wrote a brief paragraph about each one. My teacher, Miss Cornelius and the school librarian were thrilled. At the end of the year awards assembly, they presented me with an embarrassment of prizes—including a lap desk with an assortment of pens, pencils, and writing paper inside. It was my pride and joy for a long time.

Looking back, I realize that many of the books I read that year were biographies. How
I loved learning about Annie Oakley, Dolley Madison, Amelia Earhart and Abigail Adams. Even now I still love reading biographies and memoirs. Why? There are several reasons.

Biographies bring history to life. World War II becomes more than dates and places when one reads about Corrie Ten Boom’s trials and tribulations in a concentration camp. Ecuador becomes vividly real when one reads about Elisabeth Elliot eating roast monkey while evangelizing the savage Waorani tribe. The battle for civil rights takes on flesh when one reads about little Ruby Bridges, who had to be escorted to elementary school by US Marshals.

Biographies make me want to be a better person. Reading about surfer Bethany Hamilton makes me want to be braver. Reading about Florence Nightingale makes me want to be more caring. Reading about Pandita Ramabai—a female Hindu scholar who converted to Christianity—makes me want to be bolder in my faith.

Biographies provide us with valuable life lessons. Young athletes and others cannot help but be encouraged by the life of runner Wilma Rudolph, who overcame crippling polio to go on to win gold medals in the Olympics. The musically inclined will admire Mahalia Jackson, who overcame poverty and prejudice to earn the title of gospel music queen. Although paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair, Joni Eareckson Tada’s experiences teach all of us about faith, prayer, and determination. She didn’t let her disabilities prevent her from achieving a reputation as a gifted mouth artist, talented vocalist, and author.

Christian biographies encourage us to keep running the good race. Living in a culture addicted to mediocrity, we need to be inspired by believers who struggled against sin and adversity to triumph in the end—people who served as salt and light in this troubled world.

Biographies should be a staple in our in our diet—especially in the diet of our children and grandchildren. As author Os Guinness has written, “…great lives do more than teach. They stir, challenge, rebuke, amuse and inspire at levels of which we are hardly aware.”

So when was the last time you read a good biography? Maybe it’s time to do so again. You won’t even have to write a book report.

Shirley's latest book, Courageous World Changers: 50 True Stories of Daring Women of God can be purchased at Amazon, B&N and Christian Book.com

Wow, Shirley, your post reminds me of the Vocational Biographies I wrote early in my career! Great information. Thanks for sharing!

Hope you enjoyed today's post friends and that you'll check back each week for Wednesday Words with Friends and Saturday Spotlight. Be sure and leave a comment to enter my monthly gift card giveaway!

Until next time take care and God bless.

#SaturdaySpotlight is on Leigh Young & Lessons from the Letters!

Good Morning!

Well, we're in the waiting period now between Good Friday and Resurrection Sunday. Seems appropriate right, as we wait for this Covid-19 crap and stay at home orders to end. They may not be over by tomorrow, but trust me friends....they will end. For now all we can do is wait and try to focus on the good things that come from this trial. Which is another reason I believe today's Saturday Spotlight guest and book is SO very appropriate!

Brought to us from Adams Media, author Leigh Young explains why letters written specifically to churches found in the Book of Revelation are still relevant to believers today....

“Jesus analyzed seven groups of believers and wrote to them to exhort and encourage them,” says Young. “Those new Christians were pioneers of our faith.  They were people who were making a great effort to follow the Lord in a difficult environment. With His omniscient vision, Christ pointed out their strengths and their weaknesses.  Now, the torch is passed to us. It is our turn. We are now the Christians trying to live like Christ in an often ungodly environment. Christ is showing us the way to the abundant life through these letters.”

Young says understanding the context of the letters is important, and her research of each of the cities and their corresponding cultures at the time the letters were written helps the reader gain valuable insights into the meaning of the scriptures.

“During the time when the letters were written, the Laodicean Research University invented and marketed a wonder drug—eye salve,” says Young. “They sent this miracle eye medication throughout the Roman Empire.  Yet, Jesus called them blind. Another celebrated commodity of Laodicea was black wool.  Because dyed cloth was expensive, black clothing was highly coveted.  The Laodicean black sheep supplied black wool allowing the merchants to sell the raw wool, black cloth, and garments made from this prized cloth. Jesus refers to the citizens of Laodicea as naked, not well-dressed, as they saw themselves. We would miss this head knowledge if we did not delve into the culture of this city. But more importantly than impacting our head, this can impact our heart. What areas of our life are we self-sufficient and do not need God?”

Young says these letters, written over 2000 years ago, should be seen as a source of encouragement to Christians in today's culture.

“These seven churches were located in cities ruled by Rome.  The empire did not separate church and state. The residents of these cities were supposed to worship the multitude of mythological gods and the emperor.  The Christians who refused to bow down to these gods were considered atheists and traitors. Today, we often feel overcome by the amount of pornography, violence, discord in government, and hatred. The original seven churches in Asia Minor faced these same issues.  In some aspects, the environment was worse than ours today. However, they overcame.  They lived for Christ in a world that often hated His way.  This realization gives me great hope.”

Q: What motivated you to write this book?
A: Although they were written 2000 years ago, the words of advice and counsel are as relevant today as they were to those churches and parishioners centuries ago. The gospel of John records Jesus saying, “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”  In the letters in Revelation, Jesus reveals this path to those early churches, to their parishioners, and to you and me. We should seek guidance from the One who created us. He knows our strengths and our weaknesses. He made us. The book of Revelation unveils this promise in the first chapter, “Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it.”  Jesus ends each of his seven letters with the words, “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says.” Jesus’s words of advice and counsel have the added supernatural benefit and blessing of the Holy Spirit working within us to help us put these words into practice.

Q: You address both the context and patterns of the letters to the seven churches in Revelation. Why are those things important to know?
A: Knowing the context of the letters is extremely important to understanding the nuances Jesus is conveying. As we plant ourselves in the place, time and setting of the original letters, we can extract more clearly the lessons being taught.  The more we ascertain about these locations and their churches, the better we can appreciate the intended meanings of their correspondences. For example, the city of Laodicea suffered tremendous damage from an earthquake. Just as here, the Roman Governor declared a State of Emergency and the Roman equivalent to FEMA came in with money to help them rebuild.  The people of Laodicea turned their money down.  They were too self-sufficient to accept any help. In Jesus’s letter to this proud congregation, he wrote that they were wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked.  He calls them “poor” referring to their prestigious banking center. Historians report that Cicero cashed his checks in Laodicea.  However, Jesus called them poor. During the time when the letters were written, the Laodicean Research University invented and marketed a wonder drug—eye salve. They sent this miracle eye medication throughout the Roman Empire.  Yet, Jesus called them blind. The third celebrated commodity of Laodicea was black wool.  Because dyed cloth was expensive, black clothing was highly coveted.  The Laodicean black sheep supplied black wool allowing the merchants to sell the raw wool, black cloth, and garments made from this prized cloth. Jesus refers to the citizens of Laodicea as naked, not well dressed as they saw themselves. We would miss this head knowledge if we did not delve into the culture of this city. But more importantly than impacting our head, this can impact our heart. What areas of our life are we self-sufficient and do not need God?  The context helps us to find lessons we can learn from this letter.

The pattern of all the letters is fascinating as each letter is written in the same format. Jesus begins by introducing Himself in a way that is relevant to that particular congregation. Next, He assures them that He sees what is happening in their city and in their church with the words, “I know.”  The omniscience is comforting in some situations and confronting in others. Christ then compliments them on the things they are doing well and exhorts them in areas in which they can improve.  The letter concludes with a warning revealing the negative outcomes of not heeding the suggestions for improvement and the positive consequences of following the prescribed actions.

Q: Why do you believe these letters to the seven churches are still relevant today?
A: In the letters, Jesus addresses issues which He sees in those churches. For example, He reminds the church in Ephesus that hard work and perseverance are wonderful traits, but, first and foremost, God is looking for our heart. Jesus reassures the parishioners in the church in Smyrna that He sees so-called “religious people” slandering and hurting them. The injustice done to them by fellow believers is not unnoticed.  This encouragement is as comforting today as it was for the believers centuries ago. In Pergamum, Jesus tells the Christians that they must be on guard to remain true in a culture that is becoming increasingly immoral. Sound familiar for today? This message is timeless.

Q: It is unusual to tie the book of Revelation to abundant living. How did you make that connection?
A: Jesus analyzed seven groups of believers and wrote to them to exhort and encourage them. These new Christians were pioneers of our faith.  They were people who were making a great effort to follow the Lord in a difficult environment. With His omniscient vision, Christ pointed out their strengths and their weaknesses.  He wrote to seven churches because seven is the number of completion signifying that these traits, characteristics, and advice encompass all believers. Now, the torch is passed to us. It is our turn. We are now the Christians trying to live like Christ in an often ungodly environment. Christ is showing us the way to the abundant life through these letters.

Q: The historical information in your book has been heavily researched. Were there any specific things you learned during your research that stood out to you?
A: One of the recurring themes that stood out to me was the immoral influence of the pagan religion of this period in Roman history and the way it permeated that society and the lives of the believers. These seven churches were located in cities ruled by Rome.  The empire did not separate church and state. The residents of these cities were supposed to worship the multitude of mythological gods and the emperor.  The Christians who refused to bow down to these gods were considered atheists and traitors.  The worship practices for some of these gods were immoral.  Temple priests and priestesses of the fertility gods indulged in sexual rites with parishioners as part of the required “worship.” Some gods had horrific ceremonies designed to please and pacify the gods and provide the worshiper with some sort of gain. Their religious practices revolved around harming themselves physically. In extreme cases, these gods were “fed” by human sacrifice and torture. The more utilitarian gods, gods of grain and the household, “blessed” the work of the worshiper. The Christians who were unwilling to bow down to these gods were excluded from business and unable to make a living for their families. Those who did worship these gods made the case that the non-compliant Christians would make the gods mad with their refusal to bow before the gods and remove the blessings of success from their community. In those cities in which emperor worship was prominent, the believers’ refusal to bow the knee to Caesar was construed as an act of treason punishable by death. In some instances, the believer’s livelihood was impacted, and in others, their actual life was endangered. The pagan’s false religion infiltrated their culture and their daily routine.  The Christians in these churches were looked down upon on as atheists, traitors, and just plain odd. Today, we often feel overcome by the amount of pornography, violence, discord in government, and hatred. The original seven churches in Asia Minor faced these same issues.  In some aspects, the environment was worse than ours today. However, they overcame.  They lived for Christ in a world that often hated His way.  This realization gives me great hope.

Q: What do you hope readers will ultimately gain from this book?
A: My hope is to combine modern anecdotal stories with the Word to bring to light something that will help strengthen the reader’s relationship to Christ. In the words of the letters, I pray that the reader will “hear what the Spirit says.”

Q: What is the Lessons from the Letters Weekend?
A: Lessons from the Letters Weekend is about life change.  During the weekend, we explore ways to walk more closely with the Lord by fellowship, Bible study, worship, and meditative prayer time.  We “visit” each city to discover the words of advice and counsel Jesus recorded for these parishioners centuries ago and for us today.  This weekend is a perfect combination of laughter, learning, and worshiping with sisters in Christ.

#SaturdaySpotlight is on Laura-Dawn Moule & Reflections of India

Good Morning!

Hope your March has started out well. It's rainy, chilly and plain nasty here in SW Louisiana. Haven't had much sunshine at all - well, a couple of days this week. Not near enough for me though. I am definitely a summer person!

Enough about me though.

Today's guest has visited before, sharing thoughts and treasures so please welcome Laura-Dawn back with an excerpt from her book, Reflections of India....

In this fascinating book, Reflections of India: The Spiritual Journey of a Beauty Queen, you will experience everything from the exhilaration of the world of beauty pageants to the emotional lows associated with the harsh realities of life for the desperately poor. May this emotionally-charged account of a young beauty queen’s experience working in the Bombay (now known as Mumbai) and Calcutta (now known as Kolkata) slums help you discover the hope and beauty that can be found in adversity and appreciate the haunting responsibility we all share to reach out to those in distress.

Excerpt
The Vision of Bombay
O barren plains! O deserted land!
Gusts of wind sweep dust into your residents’ lungs.
The faded colours of the flowers reflect their illness.
The air smells of sickness and death.
The putrid lakes of water
        harbour deadly disease.
Trees reflect the staleness of the ground.
The ocean rules the land and washes up grey mucous upon
        its shores
while the red sun sets in full splendour.

The dogs howl in the eve.
The birds are afflicted by anger
as they struggle to eat one another.
Dead mice bear the imprints of feet that have
        trampled upon them.
Cries from the people and laments from the animals are
        simultaneous.
Flies crawl across the children’s faces,
        and lice crown their heads.
Crusted nasal drainage graces their lips,
and infected lesions are displayed upon their earlobes.

Babies lying face down on the diseased pavements;
        children who cannot cry.
Babies hold babies without mothers near.
Naked little boys peer around ragged drapes.
Their eyes reflect the misery they behold.
Sad women and edematous-bellied babies gaze.
A helpless mother watches her baby slowly die of starvation.
He can no longer pick up the pebbles with which he
        used to play.
His rags now lie lifeless on the sidewalk.

Lepers and the blind walk alone.
Despairing old men sit on the filthy streets,
their eyes mirror years of sorrow.
Heat. Sweat. Blood. Tears.
Withered faces watch without emotional response.
You smile; they stare.
The arthritic hands scrub clothes on the street;
the gnarled fingers work hard without payment.
Their chests move in and out in futile efforts to prolong
        life for another day.

Chants lack the spirit of joyful song.
No hope.
The silent bells of the soul ring,
summoning death to come and relieve them.
I look up to the sky to request help but to no avail;
it remains deaf and unfeeling to what it sees beneath it.
The screeching trains have a lingering echo,
leaving their victims behind within the bowels of the stations.
The rats are abundant, fattened from devouring flesh.

But then Hope beckons me to come close.
“Listen,” she says, “Look and see!
I come from the hands of the minister,
the care bestowed upon the poor by those willing to be used.
Bring the light of life into the spirits of those you serve,
and bring sparkle to the eyes of the helpless.
Pity them not, however,
for the question is better asked, What have you done?”

Lovely, Laura-Dawn, THANKS for sharing!

Having a creative streak from an early age, Laura-Dawn first began writing poetry and recording her prophetic dreams as a young teenager. Her literary skills were honed during the time she spent acquiring her bachelor of arts degree in English literature at McGill University in Montreal. As her interest in theology grew, she went on to write exegeses of scripture while she studied for her master of arts degree in biblical studies at the University of Sheffield. Her fascination with eschatology has continued to flourish over the years and is readily apparent in her first book, Reflections of India – The Spiritual Journey of a Beauty Queen.

#ThursdayThoughts with Laura-Dawn Moule

Good Morning!

Last month I introduced you to a new-to-me author when she shared treasures with us so please welcome Laura-Dawn Moule back to our blog!

Take it away, Laura.......

A silence fills the ballroom as the audience waits with nervous anticipation. Lovely, young hands hold a glittering tiara that reflects a fiery, iridescent light, one that promises to change someone’s destiny forever. The host’s deep voice finally speaks: “The winner is…” Another unbearable pause. Then, he calls your name! Thunderous applause wells up like tidal waves.  As you step forward, a beautiful woman who holds the stunning coronet walks towards you. With arms upraised, only a few seconds pass before you feel the weight of the dazzling crown on your head. You can’t see it, but there is an unfamiliar heaviness you’ve never experienced before. The crowd responds with simultaneous weeping, yelling, and cheering. You turn around to face the audience and take the exhilarating walk, waving at people who can’t take their eyes off you as the photographers snap away. The flashes of light seem to capture the immortality of the moment __ one that transcends time and place. You’ve fulfilled a fantasy for them. You are the fairy-tale princess of their childhood.
An already peaceful antechamber becomes even quieter as the much-anticipated meeting is moments away. Then finally, the door begins to open. A small stooped figure arrayed in a white sari meekly walks out. The deep lines of her face reflect a life of deprivation and sacrifice, while her grey eyes mirror fantastical stories of service. Her wimple is the whitest of white with three definitive blue bands that frame her glorious countenance. Her thin lips speak with authority in a distinct Albanian accent. She looks directly into your eyes and addresses you. You feel chosen. The echoes of the conversation in the sacred vestibule carry an eternal undertone that transcends time and place. She has fulfilled a fantasy for you. She is the fairy godmother of your childhood.

Most of us are fascinated by fairytales. The yearning to hear about them or perhaps to even live them out ourselves stems from childhood when our parents read us the bedtime classics. They are beguiling because every character plays a specific role in a world where the battle between good and evil is an ever-present reality. At the end, good prevails and any enemy is destroyed. In Reflections of India: The Spiritual Journey of a Beauty Queen, you will read the moving story of my experience from the exciting world of beauty pageants to the harsh realities of life seen during the time I spent working with the desperately poor. From a crowning to a calling, my pursuit of the path less traveled provides a unique glimpse into my quest to find God in the most unexpected places. A chance meeting with one of the world’s greatest humanitarians inspires me to travel to India to work in the Bombay (Mumbai) and Calcutta (Kolkata) slums in an era during which my choice was considered unusual. To my surprise, I find beauty in the midst of great suffering. May the words contained in this book help you lift the veil so you can discover the fairytale that exists for you as you discover how you can play out a unique role in a troubled world that will one day come to its rightful conclusion (Revelation 20:1 – 22:21).

#TuesdayTreasures with Laura-Dawn Moule

Good Morning and Welcome to the 1st Tuesday Treasure post of 2019!

I remember when the year 2020 seemed SO FAR OFF and impossible to live that long LOL! Can you believe we're only 1 year away from it?

Amazing isn't it when we look back - only for a moment - and remember how innocent and naive we were as children.

Alas, we're all grown up now but my guest today, new-to-me author, Laura-Dawn Moule shares some of her treasures since childhood.

Welcome Laura-Dawn!

Since I was small, I loved drawing and painting. I’d draw stick people and enjoy finger painting in kindergarten. As a young teenager, my interest became centered on painting scenes that gave me a good feeling, such as people carrying gifts on their way to church on Christmas morning. As I got a little older, I became interested in depicting works of fantasy as a means of escape from the mundaneness of life. From a little angel with an entourage of dwarfs walking through a meadow to a child standing in the snow wondering how a star could have possibly struck him on the head to little mermaids playing in a river, I lost myself in a dream world. My focus then shifted to painting real objects that I found beautiful, such as statues and fountains I saw on my travels. I have housed most of them in an art room of sorts. These pieces are my treasures because they capture my unique perspective, and they bring a sense of nostalgia when I look at them as I recall what was going on in my life at the time. Their inimitable quality is something that can’t be purchased. I think treasures are deemed such because they are irreplaceable. No substitutes will do.

When thinking about the irreplaceable from a spiritual standpoint, I think about the message of the greatest of all artists -- Jesus. He is the Word who spoke everything into existence (John 1: 1-5) and as with any great work, His creation mirrors the essence of its artist. I believe that everything He made has provided us a glimpse into eternal matters to help guide us. For example, winter speaks to the inevitability of death while spring reminds us of the concept of resurrection because what was dead comes back to life. Watching footage of the sun’s surface helps us conceptualize what the lake of fire discussed in Scripture (Revelation 20:14) must be like. When we think about the fact that cosmologists are unable to find the end of the universe, we can appreciate the notion of eternity. Jesus’s teachings regarding the eternal life provide beautiful insight into how we are to live here on earth and how important it is to choose Him before we die. If you don’t believe Him, just look around.

#TuesdayTreasures The Forgotten Way by Ted Dekker

Good Morning,

Well, Easter is over and we're in a brand new month. Things have been .... IDK....interesting (I decided to stop saying 'crazy' LOL!)

The insurance office I work in has been under renovations, I'm in Nacogdoches, TX house/dog sitting for my son and sometimes I don't know if I'm coming or going.

Alas, that's the story of my life since 2009.

Anyway, as you all know, I'm very much a seeker of God and a voracious reader, therefore it's no surprise when I bring a book to your attention.

I must admit, I've never read Mr. Dekker's fiction novels, although I'd heard a LOT about them (I'm sure that'll change in the near future though) but when I first heard of The Forgotten Way, I was intrigued. One thing that's stood out for me from the book is the edict, "love holds no record of wrong."

I'm a firm believer in the power of affirmations and that people will rise to our expectations. Problem is, most of the time, our expectations are based on past performance and experiences instead of what we know these folks are capable of.

This hit home for me in more than one instance with more than one person who I love with all of my heart when I tried writing a page of positive affirmations about them and couldn't!

I found this fact both heart breaking and mind boggling.

That's where The Forgotten Way has struck home.

If I can't find 1 page of positive affirmations around my loved ones then my "love" isn't as unconditional as I thought. My love isn't "holding NO record of wrongs."

My goal is to not only overcome these blocks to love in myself, but hopefully to teach others to do the same.

I hope/plan to do this with prayer and meditation, focusing my heart and mind on their strengths and positive qualities, and yes, writing those down in an affirmative way and to "die" to my old way of thinking, talking and feeling about them.

Isn't this what Jesus did when He looked past the actions and into the heart and offered love, forgiveness and healing?

Hopefully this exercise in Love and holding no record of wrongs will result in my loved ones rising to a new level in their own lives by rising to my new expectations of them.

We'll see!

Did you ever have blocks to love in your relationships? How did you overcome them? I'd love to hear your comments!

Hope you enjoyed today's post and that you'll drop by weekly for Tuesday Treasures, Thursday Thoughts and Saturday Spotlight.

Until next time, take care and God bless.

#TuesdayTreasures Guest post by Gail Nordskog

Good Morning Friends!

Our guest today shared thoughts with us last month so let's see what she treasures....

A Day in the life of Gail Nordskog

I very much enjoy rising early.   5:30 a.m. is my favorite time no matter what the season is.

This started years ago when my children were young.   At the time I had 4 school age children who were full of chatter from the time they woke up until they fell asleep at night.

In order to start my day peacefully I found 5:30 gave me plenty of time to make a pot of coffee, snuggle with my puppy, read my Bible and Journal.

I have pretty much kept that schedule all these years although I can sleep in a little longer.  I only have one school age daughter at home.   Kiana is now a junior in High School and my puppy is ten years old. Mitzi is joined by our 3- year-old Pomeranian, Foxi who faithfully follows the same routine with us.

Usually after an hour and 2 cups of coffee I will go outside to feed the Ducks.   We can have anywhere from 5 to 35+ ducks waiting to be fed.   We live in a harbor with a channel that leads to the Pacific Ocean behind our home.   These ducks are not native to ocean waters.  Most are mallards the other 5 are just farm yard type of ducks who are too fat to fly.  These are my favorite as they hang out here in the keys all year round.

By now my husband is up and helping with the ducks and the dogs.   Jerry usually leaves for work these days between 9 and 10.   He is a man who does not see the word “retirement” in the Bible and has been in the Publishing Business for years.  Nordskog Publishing Inc. is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year.  My husband just celebrated his 79th birthday this year!   I am not going to tell you what birthday I just celebrated but I am grateful for another year!

I usually have several projects going on at the same time.  Filming and editing my TV program, Hearts of Purpose is a continual project.   The Interviews of most of the authors can be seen on my web-site, Heartsofpurpose.com.   I will be in studio 2X’s this week to help edit one of the shows.   I’ve just recently purchased my own professional video camera and have been able to film on location.  Our 20 year old son, Daniel is often available to help.

I try to get exercise in several days a week, meet with good friends for lunch and support our children and grandchildren in their school and sports activities.

Jerry likes to say we live a rich and full and bountiful life!   Yes, indeed we do!

Jerry and I have raised 6 children, four of our children were adopted from China.   We also enjoy spending time with our 7 grandchildren.

Wow, Gail sounds like you have much to treasure in your busy life!
Thanks for sharing with us.

#ThursdayThoughts with Gail Nordskog

Good Morning!

As with most of you I'm sure, we're really getting into the "busy" of the busiest season of the year. Except for 1 gift and wrapping, I've finished my Christmas shopping. Now it's just time to get the fun going and over with LOL!

Today's guest visited with us back in September, so please welcome Gail Nordskog back to our blog to share some thoughts with us.

Take it away, Gail.....

Why writing is a form of personal Therapy:

My writing as a form of personal therapy began over 30 years ago. Sometime during the Jesus Movement in the late 1970’s I gave my life to Jesus.  I was given a gospel track called The Four Spiritual Laws.  God used that little track to open the eyes of my understanding and for me to surrender my life to Him.  I have never looked back.

Just because you become a Christian and partner with the Creator of the Universe, it does not mean you will begin to live an easy life.  In fact, it may be that all hell will break out against you to try to cause you to renounce your faith.   Or just simple, subtle temptations come to entice you to compromise your faith.

I learned quickly that prayer and praise are very powerful weapons in our arsenal as Christians.

2 Corinthians 10: 3-5: For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.

I joined a group of women who had a weekly prayer meeting.  Believers who pray God’s word fervently and faithfully are sometimes called Prayer Warriors.  These women were Prayer Warriors!

Do you remember the movie WAR ROOM, Miss Clara, played by actress Karen Abercrombie was a “simple” woman but a mighty woman of faith and prayer, A Prayer Warrior!

I felt like Elizabeth (played by actress Priscilla Shirer) whose marriage and life in general was falling apart but God led her to Miss Clara who taught her how to pray.

I remembered receiving journals for Christmas and birthday gifts as a little girl.  They were usually pastel in color with a little key probably used to keep your little sister from reading all your hidden thoughts and telling your Mother.  I hadn’t had one in years but remembered while in a Christian book store they had a wide selection of prayer journals.

I wanted to begin to write down my prayers, the cries of my heart as well as the blessings received.  I wanted to be able to remember all the mighty works of God in my life and those I’ve prayed with and for over the years.
I have thousands of pages of journal writings over the years. Prayer Journaling IS my therapy.

If you have never tried journaling especially while praying, try it you’ll grow to love it, resulting in a more intimate relationship with our Lord.

Oh wow, Gail, you are so right! Writing has been a form of therapy for me and countless others. Thanks for sharing your story!
