#SaturdaySpotlight is on Delia Latham and Jaimie Engle & Crossing Cheyenne

Good Morning and Welcome to another edition of Saturday Spotlight!

One of our guests, has been here before, (you can see Delia's previous posts HERE). Jaimie Engle is brand new to our blog and these two ladies have coauthored Crossing Cheyenne. Before we get into the whys and wherefores of the book, please share with us a blurb and short excerpt.

Thanks Pam! Here you go....

When a fiercely independent woman and a charming adventurer are double-booked at a remote cabin, their clashing personalities—and beloved pets—lead to unexpected sparks. As they both seek closure from their pasts, a journey of healing and love unfolds, culminating in a powerful reunion with long-lost family and a chance at a new beginning.

Excerpt: “So…lemme get this straight.” The young man smiled, but Cheyenne’s sour attitude saw only the blinding glare of his braces. “You two don’t know each other?”

“Nope.” Cowboy Billy spoke first. Of course.

The guy’s lack of manners did not coincide well with the boots and Stetson he wore like a pro. Weren’t cowboys supposed to be gentlemen and live by a secret code of conduct? So much for looks. She hated to acknowledge his, but she’d be lying if she pretended not to notice.

“Not at all.” Being forced to agree with him upped her frustration to the nth degree.

“And neither of you knew you’d be sharing the cabin with a stranger?”

“You got it, pardner.”

Cheyenne rolled her eyes. “Do I look like I would have let that happen?”

The kid turned almost purple, but did not respond to her sarcastic and admittedly catty question. Blossom must be rubbing off on her more than she realized.

“Well, it’s not supposed to happen.” He frowned, no doubt wishing himself anywhere but at work on this particular day, at this exact time.

“That we can agree on.” Cheyenne tried to shake the frustration that made her less than Pooh-worthy. She pulled out a smile that almost always worked miracles. “I’m sure you can see there’s been a mistake. And you’re going to fix it for me, aren’t you?”

“You betcha.” The poor kid turned his gaze on his computer monitor as if the very essence of life lay therein. Within moments, a grin lit his face. “Aha. That’s it.” He raised a bright green gaze to Cheyenne. “You were supposed to be a party o’ two.”

“That’s correct. But my friend got sick.”

“That’s it,” the clerk said again. “That’s the problem.”

Cheyenne blinked. “My friend getting sick is the problem?”

“Naw, ’course not. But when you called to change the set-up ’cause yer friend bailed on ya—”

“My friend did not bail on me.” Cheyenne surprised even herself with the heated retort. “She got sick.”

“Yeah, okay. Well, whoever changed the reservation for ya assident’ly canceled it.”

“But I didn’t ask to cancel. I just changed my reservation to take advantage of the single-occupancy rate.”

“Same thing, ma’am. Clearly stated on the website.”

“Not clearly enough. That’s pretty obvious, don’t you think?”

The kid continued as if she hadn’t spoken. “So, what happened is, when Mr. Goddard here reached out to book a spot, we showed an opening.” He grinned as if he’d just solved the riddle of the Sphinx, and shrugged one skinny shoulder. “Just a glitch in our system. That’s how come you folks got double-booked.”

Cheyenne couldn’t bring herself to return the kid’s delighted grin.

“Glitch or not, this is not going to work for me. I booked my reservation months ago.”

“Look, my dad and I stayed in this very resort when I was a little boy,” Cowboy Billy interjected. “I booked here for a specific reason. Something personal, and…well, important. Guess I was lucky your friend bailed.”

“She did not bail!” Cheyenne glared. “And you’re just going to have to…” She huffed a sigh and fluttered one hand. “Unbook.”’

With that, the two of them went at it, arguing loudly and without restraint. Guests gathered in clusters, openly staring, and Cheyenne did not care. Apparently, neither did Billy Butt-in, who didn’t come across like a gentleman cowboy in the least.

The clerk managed to make himself heard over their little word-war. “Look, folks, I’d love to solve your problem on account’a y’all don’t seem to be gettin’ on too well, but there’s just one thing.”

“What?” Cheyenne and her cowboy nemesis snapped the word in unison, with greater volume than necessary.

The kid shrugged. “We don’t got no more rooms.”

Don’t got wha—? “Great, Cheyenne muttered.

“And when might you have something?” The cowboy clearly sought to bring about some sort of diplomacy. Wonderful. She was up against a non-gentleman-cowboy politician.

The clerk scrolled through a couple of screens. “Friday is our first opening.”

“Friday is when I check out,” Cheyenne informed him.

“Oh, yeah, you’re right. You are the Friday opening.”

And so it went. A manager showed up to try and help, but the long and short of the situation was that no other openings existed—neither here, nor at their sister resort, nearby. For that matter, not a single hotel, motel, or bed-and-breakfast for miles around had a room to offer.

I wonder if this is how Mary and Joseph felt when they couldn’t find a place to stay the night Jesus was born. The thought came and was gone like a flash of lightning. She couldn’t think about such things at the moment.

Cheyenne continued to appeal to the sympathies of the clerk and manager, but since they weren’t able to manufacture another cabin out of thin air, they could offer no solution. At last, the manager threw up his hands in frustration.

“I’m truly sorry, folks, but I’m afraid your paths have crossed for one reason or another.”

Cheyenne froze.

“Some paths are destined to cross.” A familiar voice—maybe too familiar—whispered the line right into her ear.

Wow! I'm hooked. Now please tell us why you wrote the book and a little more about yourselves.

JAIMIE'S WHY:
In 2020, my family vacationed in North Carolina, staying in a charming two-story cabin. I had my dog with me, but an unexpected case of COVID kept me indoors, giving me time to reflect and dream up a new romcom idea. Inspired by the cabin’s cozy setting, I imagined two strangers double-booked in the same space—one with a dog, the other with a cat. At first, it felt like a quirky meet-cute, but I quickly realized their paths weren’t just crossed by accident—something deeper was at play. What if they were both heartbroken, and their time together became a healing journey orchestrated by God?

Brandon, the dog lover, is mourning the loss of his estranged father, whose ashes he’s tasked with spreading in the breathtaking landscapes of Wyoming. Cheyenne, desperate to find the mother she never knew, sets out on a search that leads her to the Midwest. Two souls, each longing for closure, unknowingly find the missing pieces in one another—through laughter, companionship, and unexpected love.

This premise sparked Crossing Cheyenne, and after completing the script, I teamed up with the incredibly talented Delia Latham to bring the novel to life. With her wisdom and insight, she deepened the characters and enriched the story in ways I hadn’t imagined. I can’t wait for readers to experience the journey, and for audiences to see the film streaming in the years to come!

JAIMIE'S BIO:

Jaimie Engle is a multiple award-winning writer of stories with a magic touch. With over a dozen published books, she is an expert in all things storytelling, teaching at national conferences, state libraries, and local schools on writing, publishing, and marketing books. Jaimie’s YA novel “Metal Mouth” was a quarterfinalist in the Book to Film Award, a Kirkus Editor’s Choice book, and received the Publisher’s Book Life Prize in fiction. She was also a semifinalist in the Publisher’s Book Life Prize in non-fiction, a recipient of the Writers of the Future Award, and her screenplays have been semifinalists for Austin Film Festival and Screencraft, to name a few.

She has worked with hundreds of writers to tell their stories, write their books, and adapt their work for film and television development. Jaimie optioned her first feature film “Just Jake” with distribution deal through UPTV Faith & Family Network (2023) and has several of her award-winning tv shows and movies in development with major studios and networks. When not telling stories, Jaimie spends time with her family in Florida, and her two dogs, Ahsoka and Moofart. Fun fact? Jaimie danced at the halftime show of the Aloha Bowl! www.JaimieEngle.com

The Creation of Crossing Cheyenne
Crossing Cheyenne was my first experience writing a story based on an already-completed movie script. Still partially romance—that’s my genre—and still clean, but not faith-based, and not my original brainchild. Instead, I was turning a script, written by the talented and amazing Jaimie Engle, into a novel.

How in the world did I find myself doing such a thing? (I think I heard someone ask that question…didn’t I? It was you, right?)

Well, funny you should ask, because I love sharing the “why” of this particular story. Here goes—because you asked, of course…

When I “met” Jaimie Engle, I was editing for Vinspire Publishing (no longer in business, but an excellent small publishing house in its day). The owner/editor-in-chief asked if I’d be interested in editing a book for one of her new authors. “It should be an easy edit,” she said. “The author is experienced and talented, with quite a few published books.” But the kicker was that I’d be editing a novel written around the script for a movie that was already released and available for viewing. (If you’re curious, the book and movie are both titled Just Jake.)

Yes, we all knew things were moving a bit in reverse, but what the heck—sure, I’d give it a go. And that’s how I first came in contact with Jaimie. I edited her beautifully written book, we enjoyed working with each other, and then the job was done. Bye, Jaimie, nice meeting you, have a blessed life.

But she contacted me a few months later, asking if I’d write a novel based on a script she’d already written and was in the process of marketing to the appropriate people in the film industry. This time, she hoped to get the book written and released before the movie. Would I do it? (Interesting fact: Jaimie had never read a single one of my 30+ novels/novellas. She asked me to write the book based solely on my editing style.)

Well, the rest is history. Of course I did it, and of course I loved the opportunity to work with Jaimie again. I tremendously enjoyed fleshing out the characters and creating “more” for the story—more scenes, more details, more background…just more. I also loved the humor that came so naturally to Cheyenne and Brandon’s story. Jaimie and I laughingly agreed that what we ended up with is a romcomdram…or something like that. It’s a romantic comedy with enough romance to curl your toes now and then, and that little touch of humor that provides the occasional laugh-out-loud moment. The thread of drama running throughout the book was a joy to write!

The result, with the combination of our individual strengths, is an honestly strong story that readers will love. I love it too, and will be forever grateful that Jaimie trusted me enough to invite me on board.

Hey, Jaimie…thank you…thank you very much!

I’d love to hear your take on our unconventionally created story. Grab a copy at Amazon or Other Online Retailers, give it a read, and then share your thoughts on your favorite bookseller and/or review website. I’ll just say thank you now, because trust me, it will be appreciated.

Happy reading!

#SaturdaySpotlight is on Vicki Batman @VickiBatman & Sommerville holidays too!

Good Morning,

Today is Bayou Writer's Group's annual Christmas party/meeting so I'm not going to take up too much of your time. Vicki Batman has been a guest here before but please welcome her back with her collection of short stories, Sommerville holidays too and a holiday recipe for Tomato Cake!

Oh, BEFORE I forget! My books are on sale 50% Off through Jan 1st @ Smashwords only! Click on the graphic in the sidebar to get copies for the readers on your Christmas list. Now on to Vicki's post....

Holiday Treats!

I am positive many of you are a baking fiend. Or a crafty fiend. Or Christmas everything fiend. LOL.

Friends and family come together over food. I especially crave my brother-in-law's snack mix. A friend gives me homemade treats. But what do I do?

I turn to fruitcake. Before you go all wonky over fruitcake, know I use the very best—Collin Street Bakery in Corsicana, Texas. I cut the cake into bite-sized chunks and set the pieces on wire racks. I melt chocolate and spoon it over the cake. Trust me, this tastes like candy.

My grandmother baked a special cake for Thanksgiving and Christmas—Tomato Cake. I know, again, you are thinking I am off my rocker. Trust me. This cake does not taste like tomatoes. Tomato soup is the wet ingredient. It's filled with fruit and spices. My sister tops hers with a sugar glaze.

So what does fruitcake have to do with anything?

Because inspiration can be found in so many places, I found mine for a story in fruitcake. I researched many varieties. The story is funny and romantic. Here's a tagline and excerpt from "The Great Fruitcake Bake-off:"

When a five-time baking champion teams up with her new neighbor for The Great Fruitcake Bake-off, they discover baking a prize-winning entry is complicated, bad guys are plotting to take the crown, and first prize isn't just about a ribbon.

"I'm not entering this year." I pinned an unbreakable stare on Bethany, my co-worker and long-time friend, who lived in the same apartment complex as me. We arrived early for work and piddled over coffee in her cubical like we always did before diving into the nuts and bolts of company business. Standing firm, I crossed my arms. "Period."

Bethany rolled her eyes in the "I'm so not believing this" fashion and tweaked the Santa garland decorating her cube's walls. "Why not, Samantha? You should be proud to be the five-time winner of The Great Fruitcake Bake-off. You're a-a"--her words trailed off as she searched the ceiling for the ultimate in descriptive--"legend."

I twitched my black skirt in place, and then I tucked my shoulder-length hair behind my ear. I let loose a long exhale. "Is being a legend in the fruitcake world a good thing?"

#WednesdayWordswithFriends welcomes Idabelle Aylor!

Good Morning Friends!

Well, we've made it to the last week of May. Many states are beginning to open up for business - though I'd venture to say "as usual" is not the case and won't be for quite sometime, if ever. We've heard of several local businesses who are permanently closed due to the financial strain this virus has had on the economy. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who is personally affected in any way by Covid-19!

Enough about that though. Idabelle Aylor is brand new to our blog so please show her a huge, warm WELCOME and let's see what she has to say today.....

Image by JulieAnne van der Lek @ Pixabay
When I opened my personal Facebook account the other day it showed me a memory from six years ago. I don’t usually re-post those but this one, this one was special, so I had to save it. Just to get the ball rolling, have any of you ever had an attack rooster? Yep, that’s right, an attack rooster. Apparently, it’s not as uncommon as I first thought. But, for my family, it was a brand-new experience.

Let me start off by saying that this Rhode Island Red rooster was hand fed strawberries, apples, and whatever other fruit happened to be handy, from the time it was a chick until it was given to us by an acquaintance. OK, in our defense, we did hand feed him fruit from time to time but we needed him to be our hens’ rooster, their guardian, their protector! He had it made at our place, free range of all the acreage, hens, endless bugs, and that wasn’t even the least of it.

So, we get him home and we’re all excited for our new addition to the family. Everything was great...until...it wasn’t anymore. No one is quite sure what went wrong in his little head, except maybe...puberty? Our son said maybe the rooster, Red was his name, was angry with us for not hand feeding him like he was accustomed to. Mmm, maybe. But, whatever it was that triggered him, it set him off good.

It started one day when I went out for a run. It was a nice morning and felt good to be out. I walked down our driveway toward the road and, before putting on my headphones, I heard quickly approaching footsteps from behind. Turning to see what was behind me, I saw Red, running full force on his little chicken legs, toward me. I thought he was coming to say ‘hi’ so I talked real nice to him. I quickly realized the error in my assumption as he flew at me, spurs readied. He got me really good a couple times before I picked up a stick and swung it at him. He left me alone then but wasn’t done terrorizing the family.

After a few weeks, when everyone had had a run in with the rooster, and the kids had learned to listen and beware, you could walk outside and see the sides of the driveway were littered with sticks, waiting to be used as protection against the rogue Rhode Island Red rooster named Red.

Of course, we all laugh at the memories of it now, but at the time, it was almost scary to hear those fast little chicken feet coming up behind you in such a frenzy.

Idabelle Aylor is a small-town girl who has done big town things during her life. Since she was a girl, people watching and family stories have gotten her creative juices flowing like mad, and because of that she’s had stories brewing in her head, fighting to get out and down on paper, since she can remember. When she isn’t curled up on the couch, or porch swing, or in her little trailer named ‘Story’ writing her next greatest work of art, she’s hanging with her best friend/husband and her crazy kiddos.

Wow...I know what you mean about being chased/attacked by a rooster, Idabelle! I remember the fear and pain myself.

Thanks for sharing your story with us. We wish you the BEST of luck and God's blessings with your writing.

Hope you enjoyed today's post friends. Don't forget to leave a comment - I'll be drawing for my monthly gift card giveaway next week!

#TuesdayTreasures with Vicki Batman

Good Morning and Welcome to another edition of Tuesday Treasures!

Today I'm excited to bring a brand new-to-me and our blog author to share treasures with us.

There are so many things and people in life I treasure. Handsome, the gifts he has given me like a great life together and sparkly pieces. My boys. The ruby ring which once belonged to my mom who passed almost two years ago.

When our children were young, we visited Handsome’s family. On the property was a mama cat with two kittens. Our big cat had crossed the bridge, and the boys were having a blast playing with the babies. “Can we have them, Mom? Please???” I looked at Handsome; he looked at me. We brought both home-a short hair gray, Romper, and a brown fluffy tabby, Scooter.

Once, I overheard a friend of the boys say “let’s play with the pretty one,” meaning Romper. I picked up Scoo and said, “You’re mine.” And she was for 23 years. After Romper passed at seventeen, I knew each day with Scoo would be a treasure.

She liked to be carried against a shoulder, would make a fussy face, would smack my cheek to wake me up, and when that didn’t work, would nibble my nose. She was sweet.

Sadly, she woke up one day and couldn’t move her back legs. At 23, we knew her time had come. Putting her to sleep gave me great anguish. We all miss her.....

Wow Vicki, I can definitely identify with your treasure as I'm sure many of us can. Thank you so much for sharing with us! Tell us a little about yourself and your writing.....

I write romantic comedy! And am so lucky to have my story, “Raving  Beauty” be a part of the Just You and Me boxed set. Here’s a fun blurb:

What if the love of your life was in front of you all along?

It began innocently with a few margaritas… Kelly Stinson is persuaded to represent Yahoo! Ranch Steakhouse in the Chamber of Commerce’s beauty contest. After an unexpected swan dive off stage, her heart goes pitter patter over the orthopedic surgeon who repaired her ripped up ankle.

Daniel Ackerman has always had the hots for his twin sister’s best friend. Much to his dismay, her doctor has taken notice of the dark-haired beauty and invaded his territory. That’s about to change when he moves in to help Kelly recover physically and open her eyes to what’s been in front of her all along.

#TuesdayTreasures #AHA Featured Author Darcy Flynn

Good Morning Friends,

It's time for another AHA Featured Author. This week's guest has visited our spotlight before so please help me welcome Darcy Flynn back to our blog.....

I’ve always loved romantic comedies, especially mistaken identity stories. And what better way to confuse my heroine, then identical twin brothers. Some of my dearest friends have been identical twins, from my early childhood, until now. Six sets, to be exact. I’ve always loved being the one who could tell them apart, the best friend who shared their secrets and their pranks. I thought it was time to write a story for them.

Blurb: From the first moment coffee mogul, Will Carrington, gazes into the fiery, green eyes of Clare Sullivan, he’s hit with the feeling she does not like him. Not. One. Little. Bit. Used to being the proverbial prize by some gorgeous gold-digging fortune hunter, he’s learned to be careful. But with his hunter instincts now on high alert, he’s determined to find out the why behind her stormy-eyed glances.

Top home designer, Clare Sullivan, wants absolutely nothing to do with arrogant, self-assured Will Carrington, especially after he called her half-sister a gold digger. When she gets the opportunity to design his multi-million dollar Miami penthouse, she arrives at his office ready to decline his offer, and to tell him exactly what she thinks of his cruel and un-warranted comments.
While there, she overhears his one-sided phone conversation, which seems to further insult her sister. Assuming the worse, Clare makes the rash decision to accept the job and charge him a fortune in the process. Someone needs to teach him a lesson and what better way than with a swift kick in his wallet.

Since she and her sister have different surnames, Clare conveniently hides the connection to her sister. But while she works with Will, she discovers another side to this self-assured, woman-hater. A Jekyll to his Hyde. Charming and professional, he’s nothing like the man she’s heard about. What she doesn’t know is Will Carrington has a few secrets of his own.

Snippet:

Will loved it when a plan came together, and this one was flowing along beautifully. So well in fact, if he wasn’t careful, Clare might be inclined to get up and run. And that wouldn’t fit in with his plans at all.
And if she gnaws any more on her bottom lip, there won’t be much left to kiss.
He held out his arms. “Come here.”
Her eyes widened, and her jaw dropped two inches.
“In your dreams.”
“There is some truth to that.” He made a deliberate show of getting out of his chair, and an equally deliberate one of removing his jacket and tie.
After tossing both on the back of his chair, he took a step in her direction.
“What are you doing?” Alarm filled her eyes.
“Getting comfortable and finishing what you started this afternoon.” He undid the top button on his dress shirt, then the next. “Do you mind?”
“Yes, I mind.” She shot to her feet, snatched up the shawl and held it to her chest. “This has gone far enough.”
He shook his head. “Not nearly.” He stopped in front of her, gave her the slightest of smiles, then scooped her up in his arms as if she were a child.
She sucked in a breath and push hard against his chest. “Put me down.”
“That’s the plan, sweetheart. The question is, where?”

Darcy Flynn is known for her heartwarming, sweet contemporary romances. Her refreshing storylines, irritatingly handsome heroes and feisty heroines will delight and entertain you from the first page to the last. Miss Flynn’s heroes and heroines have a tangible chemistry that is entertaining, humorous and competitive.

Darcy lives with her husband, son, two English Setters and a menagerie of other living creatures on her horse farm in Franklin, Tennessee. She raises rare breed chickens, stargazes on warm summer nights and indulges daily in afternoon tea.

#SaturdaySpotlight is on Dacry Flynn and Double Trouble!

Good Morning and Welcome to the first Saturday Spotlight of June, 2016!

Yeah, I can't believe either how fast this year is flying by. It's been a wet, raining week here in Louisiana....and Texas. Not sure where you are but whether rained in or out in the sunshine, this week's Saturday Spotlight is sure to be a fun read!

From the first moment coffee mogul, Will Carrington, gazes into the fiery, green eyes of Clare Sullivan, he’s hit with the feeling she does not like him. Not. One. Little.

Excerpt:
“You look like you could use a drink.” Will splashed gold liquid into a glass and handed it to her.
“No, thank you.”
“Suit yourself.” He sat down opposite her and crossed one leg over the other. Sipping his whiskey, he gave her look for look. “You know, I can do this all day and night.”
“So what? Does that mean I’m not allowed to sleep while I’m here?”
“Of course you’ll be allowed to sleep. As many nights here as it takes.” He grinned, knowing full well it would infuriate her even more.
She raised her chin a fraction. “You’re hateful. But with your history, I shouldn’t be surprised.”
“Finally, we seem to be getting somewhere. And we have a history?”
She dropped her gaze from his and stared at his chest.
“Please, enlighten me?” While he waited for a response, he swirled the tumbler in his hand, causing the ice cube to clink against the glass.
Her long lashes fluttered against her cheek, making her appear nervous, which he highly doubted.
“Why don’t you just spit it out?” he said. “While I’m in a listening mood.”
She raised her eyes to his. “I have something to say to you, all right. But I will pick the time and the place to do it.”
“Ah, a woman who takes control. I like that.”
Her sparkling eyes clouded with doubt and uncertainty. She was finding him hard to read. For the moment, that suited him just fine. A woman with her designs needed to be kept on her toes. Poetic justice, as he’d had to learn the art of being unreadable because of women like her.
“Okay,” he said. “I’ll start.” He set his tumbler on the side table, never taking his eyes from her face. “You’ve disliked me from the first day I met you. Like most men, I have the hunter instinct. And you, my dear Miss Sullivan, with your glittering, green, accusatory eyes, tossed me a dare I frankly couldn’t ignore. And whether you believe it or not, what you said to me was ‘come and get me.’”
Her expressive eyes flared.
“I did no such thing. I wanted nothing to do with you. You two-faced, arrogant...” She looked him up and down. “You and your hurtful, callous words.”
Clare puffed up, reminding him of a threatened parrot.
He stared at her, dumbfounded as to what she could be talking about. This was getting more and more interesting. He picked up his glass and eyed it. “To my recollection, I’ve seldom, if ever been the callous type.”
“You know what they say.” She shrugged. “If the shoe fits.”
Her sassy, bravado act came across purely as self-preservation, and there was something poignant in that. What was it about her that could both irritate and tug on his heartstrings all at the same time?
She blinked and glanced toward the door.
“Waiting for reinforcements?”
Her eyes widened a fraction.
“I thought so.” He shook his head. “No one’s coming. It’s just you and me.”

#ThursdayThoughts: Guest post by Monique DeVere

Good Morning Friends,

It is with great pleasure I introduce to you Monique Devere as she shares with us something to think about....

Be Careful What You Pray For, You Just Might Get It!

Have you ever prayed an earnest pray and had it answered in the most unexpected way?

I love humour. I love God’s humour. We can never guess quite how He will answer our prayers. We just hope that He would. I had an encounter with God’s humour about four months ago.

Now, for you to grasp the enormity of what I’m about to tell you, you must first understand that neither my hubby nor I are huge pet lovers. Over the years we allowed each of our four kids to have the occasional pair of budgies, fish, a couple of hamsters, and one or two rabbits, but never any animal with the potential for longevity. That sounds mean, but I grew up on a plantation with tons of animals, and my grandparents on both sides were farmers, so the thought of living with animals as an adult just didn’t work for me, and my husband is the world’s biggest softie when it comes to animals.

I am not exaggerating when I tell you the man wouldn’t kill a fly! It amuses me how he would gently shoot out flies, or carefully capture a spider and put it outside. So he never wanted pets because he finds it hard when they pass away. So here I am, not wanting pets because I’d had enough of them growing up, and hubby who finds it too sad when they die. Yet, we knew we couldn’t deprive our kids of the joy and experience of owning their very own pet. But, like I said, we were never going to own something like…let’s say…a dog!

This is where the humour comes in. About 3 years ago, our first son—#2 child—agreed to dogsit for an acquaintance, only to discover two weeks later when it was time to return the dog that the owner had moved house. He’d duped my son into having a dog that he and his then fiancĂ©e—now wife—hadn’t planned on keeping. Needless to say my son fell in love with Mika, a white/golden Akita Shepherd, but struggled to keep her, what with work and a wife who had become extremely ill with undiagnosed Crohn’s disease. Eventually, my son changed jobs and was away from home a lot and of course his wife couldn’t cope with a pregnancy, home and dog. So they had to make the decision to let Mika go.

Did I mention that Mika had been badly mistreated by her first owners? No? It was very sad. I felt my son’s anguish at having to re-home her, but I also knew Mika needed to move on to a better home, so as a praying woman who does her battles on her knees, I went to the Lord. I prayed for Mika and asked God to help my son to find her a wonderful home with a Godly family who would show her unconditional love and affection. The type of family with kids who would love and spoil Mika. A home where she would live indoors, instead of having to live outside in a tiny dog house whatever the weather. My prayer was long and extensive, and filled with everything I could think that an abused dog would want in order to be happy.

A couple of weeks later my son found a temporary home for Mika, but the temporary keepers worked and Mika got bored alone at home each day and bit the handles off the cupboard doors. They returned Mika to my son along with a large repair bill.

Poor Mika.

Hubby and I exchanged a long look. I could tell what he was thinking, and I said, “No way!!!” and disappeared into my home office to write. Then the Lord touched my heart and a total sense of compassion brought tears to my eyes. Would it really be so hard to adopt Mika? She’d still be a part of my son’s family and if it’s one thing hubby and I know how to do, it is love.

After that touch from God, I sauntered out of my office to seek out hubby. But like all good stories, by the time I’d changed my mind, hubby had changed his also. We were yet again on opposing sides of the same coin. We discussed it, then called a mini family meeting with the two remaining children at home. We all agreed that we could, and should, offer Mika a loving home.

And that is how we came to own a beautiful Akita Shepherd when I never thought in a million years I’d ever willingly own a dog! Not a big one anyway—maybe just a teacup fluffball I could stick bows on and carry around in a doggie handbag :-)

We have grown deeply attached to Mika. I can’t imagine not having her around. We love her and spoil her awfully. These days she’s an indoor dog and always has her people around to keep her company, so she’s never lonely.

One of the remaining emotional scars we’ve noticed is that she’s very timid about going outside when it’s drizzling. She usually stops, looks up at whoever is letting her out with a sad puppy-dog look in her eyes as if she’s asking: are you going to shut me out in the rain? We never do. I pray that as we care for her, God will heal all her emotional scars and she can be free of her past.

This experience has taught me that sometimes when we pray, we just might unknowingly be the answer to that prayer.

Wow...great story, Monique! I think we can all identify at some point in our lives when we felt the same way about the power of prayer and God's sense of humor.

#TuesdayTreasure: Special Guest Post by Maureen Bonatch

Good Morning Friends,

As we roll on toward the end of 2015 and the holiday season officially begins with Halloween, I thought today would be a great time to introduce you to Marueen Bonatch while she shares with us something she treasures....

A Labor of Love

As the summer winds down and the first thoughts of fall tickle the corners of my mind, there’s one thing I treasure more than the changing colors of the leaves and the shadow of a promise of the autumn crisp air… tomatoes.

Not just any tomato, mind you, garden tomatoes. I hate to be the one to tell you this, but the tomatoes you see in the store, the ones that never seem quite as red. That lack firmness, and when you cut them they reveal mushy centers or bleached flesh… those aren’t real tomatoes. Those imposters could never live up to the taste of a fresh, garden tomato.

Around June I’ll start asking my father, and father in law, how soon I should expect a garden tomato. Knowing darn well that I usually have to wait until well into July, or maybe even August. I get impatient because there’s nothing like that first tomato after long months of deprivation. Then they start coming in droves. I make my best effort to ensure none of them are wasted since I know; it’s feast and then famine.

I don’t garden myself. I’ve never tried. One reason being that despite having a mother who grows beautiful flowers and a father who gardens, I have what I refer to as a black thumb. Most things I try to grow die. Houseplants shudder at the thought of taking up residence. The other more important reason that I’ve never attempted to grow my own tomatoes, is because both my father and father in law are stellar gardeners. They provide me with my bounty of tomatoes and I don’t take it for granted.

But it’s more than the tomato itself that I treasure. Because I’m sure, if I scoured the stores and farmer’s markets I might, just might, be able to find a home grown garden tomato somewhere. I treasure knowing my father and my father in law have grown these tomatoes. They’ve taken their time, and love, for months to nurture the little seedlings into plants. Painstakingly caring for them through unpredictable weather and fending off wildlife clamoring to have the garden as their lunch.

Almost anybody can start a garden (well, maybe not me, lol) but not everybody can be a gardener.  I’ve encouraged my husband to learn the gardening secrets these two wonderful men in my life have honed into a science. These tricks of their skillful trade are as precious as that cherished family recipe. These gardens, these tomatoes, are the fruits of a labor of love.

* * * * * * *
Although tomatoes are not on my list of favorite foods, I'm sure anyone who gardens and loves them will agree with Maureen!

Maureen realized later in life everyone didn’t have characters telling stories in their heads, or weren’t envisioning magic and mayhem within the everyday. This, and long walks in the beautiful state of Pennsylvania spawned a love of writing.

Therefore she’s chased other interests, though none-the-less-daring, but closer to the ground, such as belly-dancing, becoming a self-proclaimed tequila connoisseur, fulfilling her role as biker babe to her alpha hubby and surviving motherhood to twins (so far).

Penning stories boasting laughter, light suspense and something magical in the hope of sharing her love of finding the extraordinary in the ordinary world.

She's a witch hunting a spell.
He's hunting witches and falling for her.

Carman has worn out more towns and last names than impractical shoes protecting the secret of her magic blood. But when a friend goes missing, and another is infected with a deadly spell, Carman must choose. Expose her magic blood by curing the spell—or stop the infection from spreading by killing the source…the grandmother.

Magic bounty hunter Dylan has scoured libraries of banned magic paraphernalia seeking a method to distinguish genuine witches from impersonators. He suspects unorthodox librarian Carman might hold this information tighter than the hair he’s dying to unleash from her bun. With a past as hidden as his sleeve of tattoos, Dylan discovers he’s been used to gain Carman’s trust and their passion risks more than mixing mortals and magic.

Fun Facts about Grandma Must Die:

The inspiration for the church/library and the town in the story are located along a bike path the author frequents.

A church that now operates as a bar the author has visited inspired the interior of the church/library in the story.

The heroine, Carman, is obsessed with sexy, stilettos.

No real Grandmas were harmed in the making of this fictional story. In real life everyone loves Grandmas (unless, of course, they’ve been infected with a nasty spell).

Sound like a really cute story!

Grandma Must Die can be purchased at The Wild Rose Press and Amazon.

Hope you enjoyed today's treasure. Stay tuned weekly for more!

Until next time....take care & God Bless.
