E.A. West....Providing journeys of hope, one story at a time.....

What started out as a bit of research for a sociology paper quickly turns into much more than Cindy ever expected. But can she survive Danny’s PTSD long enough to form a relationship with him? Cindy Waymire, a college senior in search for a topic for an upcoming sociology paper, finds more than a topic when she meets Army veteran and college freshman Danny Flynn outside the student union. An undeniable attraction to this troubled veteran leads her on a difficult and wind-ing path that brings her to a crossroads — get into a relationship with a man who has serious mental health problems or turn her back on one of the best men she’s ever met. Can Cindy set her fears aside and follow her heart, or will the ghosts haunting Danny’s mind end their relationship before it begins?

Excerpt:

A dark-haired guy with an athletic build, not more than an inch or two taller than her height of five foot nine, stood scanning the area as though he was lost. Clean-shaven, with just a hint of a five o’clock shadow along his jaw, he wore a T-shirt and jeans, both fitting just tight enough to hint at lean muscles. Cindy considered taking a candid photo and sending it to her girlfriends, but her cell phone was in her purse and digging it out would be too obvious. Maybe she could find another way to share this cutie with them.

His actions reminded her of her own during her first semester there. She’d had to ask someone where to find buildings so many times. Without those sympathetic upperclassmen, she would have been perpetually lost. If he was a new student, that made her the sympathetic upperclassman. She stopped near him and smiled.
“Hi, can I help you find someplace?”

He didn’t seem to hear her. She moved closer, thinking he might not realize she was talking to him. “Excuse me.”

He twisted and grabbed her wrist with startling speed. She screamed as he spun her around, bringing her arm behind her and forcing her to the ground as he said something unintelligible, but undeniably commanding. As he put a knee on her back and pulled her other arm, she heard people running toward them and prayed they could help. The guy was strong and no amount of struggling did any good. He just tightened his grasp on her wrists and applied more pressure with his knee, making it difficult for her to draw in a breath.

“Danny, let her up!” a male voice said as the running steps stopped beside them.

“He’s a threat.”

He? Before Cindy could figure out what the guy was talking about, she felt some of his weight lift from her back.

“She’s a noncombatant, Sarge,” a third male voice said.

The grip on her wrists loosened. “What?”

“You’re in the States, man.”

“Crap!” He released her wrists, and his weight lifted from her completely.

Saturday Spotlight - The Inheritance

Good Morning Friends!

It's that time of the week and month for a spotlight on one of my books! This time I chose, The Inheritance.

In many scriptures, the Bible tells us that we have an inheritance from the Lord. God tells us He has set us apart for an inheritance and that we are joint heirs with Christ!

Here's a sneak peek into The Inheritance.....

The Inheritance is about the chance we all long for…the chance to start over. Widowed at age thirty-nine and suffering from empty nest syndrome, Rebecca Sinclair is overshadowed by grief and loneliness.  Her husband has been deceased for a year, her oldest child has moved to New York in pursuit of an acting career and her youngest child is attending college in France. Having spent over half of her life as a wife and mother, she has no idea what God has in store for her now.  Will an unexpected inheritance in the wine country of New York bring meaning and purpose to her life and give her the courage to love again?

US Postal worker Raymond Jacobey has been in love with the little widow since he first set eyes on her.  A wanderer searching for the ever-illusive soul mate, Ray has never stayed in one place too long. Raised by self-centered, high-power executives, he’s longed for the idyllic life of residing in a cozy house in a small town with the love of his life. Will he gain the heart of the lovely widow or will he lose her to the wine country of New York?

Read Chapter 1 HERE or enjoy the Excerpt below!

Rebecca let him lead her up the snow-covered bank until they stood in a clearing looking out to where heaven and earth met in a glorious profusion of rock and sky. Clouds surrounded mountain peaks like halos. A rainbow shimmered in the sky, brilliant colors against a backdrop of aqua so breathtaking they were literally gasping for air.

“It’s so beautiful,” she breathed. Ray slid his arms around her waist, and she leaned against his chest. He rested his chin on her head, and they stood in silence gazing at the raw beauty of creation until the damp chill permeated their clothes.

Running his hands down her arms in a warming caress, Ray took Rebecca’s hands in his then turned her to face him. She could see his heart in his eyes as he quoted Scripture. “The earth declares the glory of the Lord, the heavens proclaim His handiwork. That might not be an exact quote, but close enough. It is beautiful. Thank you for sharing it with me.”

Rebecca’s heart fluttered at the charming, boyish grin he bestowed on her. She knew he’d spoken more than mere words; he’d spoken his heart. Tears filled her eyes and clogged her throat when she thought about what the future might hold. Standing on the threshold of that great unknown, she had never been more acutely aware of anything than she was of this moment, this man.

He was looking at her intently. His thumbs caressed the back of her hands, chasing the chill from her blood. Lethargic warmth stole over her. As though in a fog she watched him lift her hands to his mouth and press his lips to her palm in a caress so tender it sent shivers down her spine.

She lowered her gaze, and he lifted her chin with his finger and waited until she looked at him again. “I want to kiss you, Becca, here in the midst of Paradise,” he whispered, his lips covering hers with devastating tenderness.

Rebecca heard his primitive grunt of satisfaction when he let go of her hands and wrapped his arms around her, pulling her closer. An answering purr escaped her as tiny pinpoints of pleasure bathed her senses with light and color. Never in her life had she felt so alive, so consumed with sensations.

Whether a moment or an eternity, she had no idea how long they stood there, his mouth in sweet possession of hers. All she knew was that when the kiss was over she was plastered against his hard body, her breathing was sharp almost painful and her fists were clenched in his thick, sandy-colored hair. Appalled at her wanton response and the needy way in which she clung, Rebecca flung away with a startled cry of distress, and began to run.

The Inheritance is available now from Pelican Book Group/White Rose Publishing in Print & Ebook as well as on Kindle & Nook.

Thursday Thoughts - Guest Post - Angie Webb

Looking Up

In today’s world, we are often so inundated with negative, worldly opinions it is difficult to remember who controls the world and who spun it into existence. GOD.

I am thankful that I don’t have to wonder the outcome of this life because my GOD has it all under control. No matter what the news programs say, the newspapers say, the government says, GOD has it all worked out for the good of HIS believers. The world can definitely get us down if we don’t stay focused on the ultimate author of the story of our lives.

My life has been a place of learning this the hard way after living a life full of abuse, fear, anxiety and eventually agoraphobia. Living my life not allowing the author to write on my heart and soul only caused more anxiety and fear. When I let go of the control and allowed God to take over the reins, my life totally changed. Fear vanished; anxiety lessened and God has worked on my heart on a level that I never imagined was possible. Life is blossoming because I continue to LOOK UP to the ONE TRUE GOD.

Tuesday Treasure - Cowboy Hearts

Good Morning Friends and Welcome to another edition of Tuesday Treasures!

In last week's post, I mentioned some of the treasures one can find hiking the trails out here on the Silver Spur Guest Ranch.

One of those treasures is a cowboy heart rock.

Well, wouldn't you know, we (staff and guests) were out armadillo hunting when another staff member found one of these rocks. She knew I'd been looking for one so she gave it to me.

If you're a Country Music fan, I'm sure you've heard the song, "Mama Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys" by Willie Nelson in which he warns...."cause he's always alone even with someone he loves." I often wondered what that meant, but in asking about why these rocks were called "cowboy hearts" I heard it's because cowboys have hearts as hard as stone.

Now I'm sure that saying was perpetrated by angry or perhaps lonely women whose hearts had been broken by the cowboys they love. We always hear songs and stories about women leaving their rodeo cowboys for someone more stable, so I guess there may be some truth in that theory.

But I got to thinking.....

In Ezekiel  (11:19 & 36:26), God talks about removing our "heart of stone" and giving us a new spirit and a "heart of flesh" so I wonder, could these rocks be indicative of people whose stony hearts have been removed and replaced with "a new spirit and a heart of flesh?"

If you've known me very long you know my favorite story about the rock my husband gave to me when we were courting and how he said, "My love is like this rock, it's strong and solid, it'll never change, it'll last forever, and there's not another one like it in the world" and how I've placed that rock and framed quote in a shadow box. I've even said I wouldn't have traded that rock for a million roses!

I'm not sure if my next husband will be a cowboy or, (like my deceased one) a cop, but I do know like King David, he will have a "heart of flesh" and a "heart after God's heart."

IMW, I'm going to keep this cowboy heart rock to remind me to not let anything cause my heart to harden but to keep it tempered before the Lord.

Speaking of Tempered Hearts, check out book one in my 'Tempered' series set here in Bandera, TX available on Kindle & Nook!

Rancher Craig Harris and veterinarian Tamera Collins clash from the moment they meet. Innocence is pitted against arrogance as tempers rise and passions ignite to form a love as pure as the finest gold, fresh from the crucible and as strong as steel. Thrown together amid tragedy and unsated passion, Tamera and Craig share a strong attraction that neither accepts as the first stages of love. Torn between desire and dislike, they must make peace with their pasts and God in order to open up to the love blossoming between them. It is a love that nothing can destroy when they come to understand that only when hearts are tempered, minds are opened and wills are softened can man discern the will of God for his life.

Saturday Spotlight ~ Jacqueline Seewald & The Truth Sleuth

Good Morning & Welcome to this week's Saturday Spotlight, my friend and fellow Five Star author, Jacqueline Seewald. Jacqueline has some news about her Five Star "Kim Reynolds librarian sleuth novels" so I'll let her jump right on in and tell you all about it!

I’d like to thank Pam for choosing me to be the focus of her Spotlight blog this weekend.

Harlequin Worldwide Mystery has now made two more of my Kim Reynolds librarian sleuth romantic mystery novels, THE INFERNO COLLECTION and THE TRUTH SLEUTH, available in low cost paperback editions. They published THE DROWNING POOL in 2012.

Kim is both a reluctant psychic and a reluctant detective. However, she can’t seem to avoid finding dead bodies and subsequently solving murders—with some help from her friends. Here are a few brief review blurbs for the series:

Reviews for The Inferno Collection:

“An unusual setting—the esoteric banned manuscripts of a library—and an unusual heroine with a horrific secret set The Inferno Collection apart from other romantic suspense novels. With some powerful imagery in her disturbed and disturbing dreams, Kim Reynolds makes a thought-provokingheroine. I hope Jacqueline Seewald will explore her life in more depth in the future.” --Sara Paretsky

“Irresistibly spellbinding. Captivating from the start, The Inferno Collection, compels with tension and brims with edginess. A thrilling read for suspense lovers!” Iris Green, The Chick Lit Review

For The Truth Sleuth

Booklist:

“The Truth Sleuth packs a double whammy.  Not only is the solution to the murder unexpected, but the sleuth's personal life is just as surprisingly complex.  Add in a colorful school setting and a protagonist with special gifts, and you get a winner.” ~
Toni L.P. Kelner, New York Times Bestselling author

“Who better than a psychic reference librarian to untangle a complicated romance and decipher a mysterious death? Jacqueline Seewald has written one for the books!” ~
Molly MacRae, award-winning author of Wilder Rumors and Lawn Order

For The Drowning Pool:

”THE DROWNING POOL is an entertaining romantic police procedural with psychic elements…” ~ Midwest Book Review,

“Seewald uses an old trick in a new way--Very clever.” ~ Crimespree Magazine

“THE DROWNING POOL is an engaging romantic suspense tale that not only will have the reader intrigued with the twist and turns that the investigation takes, but the drama that unfolds between Mike and Kim. Secondary characters complement the story with their multilayered facets that make their lives so eccentric… Jacqueline Seewald has crafted a spine tingling tale that readers will enjoy.”~ Romance Reviews Today

Featured New Titles at Ramsey County Library
Fiction
The second entry in the Kim Reynolds series finds Kim, a college librarian in suburban New Jersey, and her boyfriend, Detective Mike Gardner, investigating the suspicious death of Rick Bradshaw, who was found dead in the swimming pool at Kim’s apartment complex. The victim was not a nice guy, and the suspects are legion: his fiancée; his current and former mistresses; his numerous ex-girlfriends, most of whom hated him; and assorted husbands of those numerous ex-girlfriends and mistresses. They are assisted by Mike’s new partner, Bert St. Croix, formerly of the NYPD and the first black woman in the Webster Township PD, and by Kim’s psychic talents (she can see ghosts). While they work on tracking down the killer, Mike tries to persuade Kim to accept his proposal of marriage, and Bert experiences a rocky start with her colleagues in the department. This is an entertaining mystery with very likable characters, and Kim’s psychic abilities are interesting without being too off-the-wall. Readers who liked James Patterson’s Women’s Murder Club series or the Reagan Reilly books by Carol Higgins Clark will get a kick out of this one.

Well friends, if you enjoy mysteries, you're sure to love Jacqueline's books!

Until next week....take care & be blessed!

Thursday Thoughts...What If?

What IF.......

.......That never ending spiral of thoughts that don't ever seem to get resolved....

What if such and so hadn't happened?
What if this or that happens?
What if he/she hadn't said that
What I'll say if......

Jesus taught us to pray "give us this day our daily bread." He told us not to worry about the future .... what good does worrying do, does it add one more hour or one more day?

And we know worrying will never change the past.

So what are we to do?

What if...for just one day we live in the moment...this moment, this day. Let us take captive any thought that exalts itself against the knowledge of God (love) and eradicate it from our mind (2 Corinth. 10:5) and in it's place let us consider not only our blessings, but how we may bless someone else.

Often times we think of blessing someone as giving them something... What if the only thing you can give is a heartfelt prayer on their behalf?

Seems like such a small thing. But what if that small thing...multiplied by millions of people...actually changed the world we live in?

Let us not despise the little things we can do to bless and honor our God and His creation!

Until later remember....Don’t allow the world outside and around you poison the beauty within.

Trails and Treasures

Good Morning!

One of the things I enjoy here at the Silver Spur Ranch is the many hiking trails. Fossils, cowboy heart rocks...You never know what you might find.

What I love most about a solitary walk or hike is the time to focus my heart to prayer and my ears to hear the Voice of the One who loves me....My Lord and Savior...the Lover of my soul.

Sunday morning I took advantage of the lovely weather and hiked for about an hour and a half. On the trail I found a perfume bottle.

I've been soaking it ever since to try and clean it up and managed to find a label. YORK.

Today I was able to uncover a photo of the bottle. Of course the brass plate and lid are missing but the shell-shaped etching is lovely.

I'm thinking it'll be great for scented oil or colored water.

So next time you're on vacation or have a few hours to yourself, find a trail and take a walk....you never know what kind of treasure you may find.

Saturday Spotlight - Sharon Srock & Terri!

Hello From Bandera, Texas!

Well I'm back at my home away from home LOL! and author Sharon Srock returns today to share with us her latest release in The Women of Valley View series: Terri.

Despite a bustling day care center and a new foster child, Terri Hayes hungers for a family of her own. Then a plumbing mishap leaves her homeless and questioning God’s plan. Steve Evans’s gracious offer of his basement apartment as a temporary solution is an answered prayer.

Steve is a successful writer and a good father, but Terri is horrified when Steve’s book research leads him to a harsh confrontation with the parents of her foster child. She needs to distance herself from Steve, but her efforts fall short as his two scheming daughters plot to make Terri their new stepmother.

Will harsh words and sneaky plans drive Kelsey’s family further apart and put a wedge between Terri and Steve? Or does God have another plan in store?

EXCERPT:

Terri Hayes chewed her bottom lip and prayed. Outside her windows on this sunny Friday afternoon, the Oklahoma summer persisted in spite of the September date circled on her calendar. Her hands sweated, and she clasped them behind her back. She would have raked them through her hair, but she wanted to telegraph calm and collected, not the nervous anticipation churning like ocean waves in her stomach. The weeks of preparation, the evenings spent in class, the hours of prayer, all came down to this.

The curly black head of her visitor disappeared under the kitchen sink. Terri heard grunts and clanks as the woman shifted and examined the contents of the cabinet. Her visitor stood and yanked the top of her crisply tailored suit back into place, her stern face thoughtful as she scribbled notes on a clipboard.
Despite Terri’s desire for calm, her lip chewing graduated to nail biting. Had she missed something? “Ms. Wilson, I…”

Cindy Wilson held up a hand. “Please, Ms. Hayes, I prefer to conduct my investigation uninterrupted. We’ll discuss my findings when I’m done.”

Terri swallowed her comments with a nod and trailed behind the imposing African-American woman whose job it was to poke and prod into every corner of Terri’s home. She ran through her own mental checklist as they proceeded from room to room. Outlets covered, medicines locked away, cleaning supplies stored out of reach, covers on all of her trash cans. A second perusal of Ms. Wilson’s expression produced no further insight. Pass or fail? Terri shook her head. I wonder if this woman plays poker.

Terri opened the door to the larger of her two spare bedrooms. The odor of fresh paint drifted out to greet them. This was the pride of her summer. She motioned her guest inside, aching to point out the highlights of what she’d worked so hard to accomplish, but she held her peace in the face of Ms. Wilson’s strident and silent inspection. More notes on the clipboard, murmurs, and hums. Approval or disapproval? How can I tell?

Inspection completed, Terri followed her visitor back to her sunken living room and made an effort to gain some control over the situation. “Have a seat, Ms. Wilson. I have iced tea or soda if you’d like something to drink”

“No, thank you.” Ms. Wilson sat on the sofa and studied her notes. Her pen tapped an annoying beat as she read. Terri took a chair across from her and waited in helpless anticipation.

“It says here that your decision to apply to our program was motivated by a television show. Can you clarify that for me, please?”

Terri clasped white-knuckled hands in her lap. “It was a documentary. I cried for the whole hour. It broke my heart to see so much to be done and so few people willing to make a difference.”

“So this is an emotional decision on your part?”

“Yes…I mean no. I—”

Terri is available NOW from Pelican Book Group / Harbour Light Books in Ebook & Print! and will be available @ Amazon on May 22nd!

Thursday Thoughts - Three Reasons to Listen to the Enemy By Lynn Hare

Good Morning!

Well another Thursday has arrived and you really don't want to know my thoughts LOL!

Seriously, it's been a crazy couple of weeks and I'm just about done in. However, my friend, Kathy Carlton Willis of KCWC, has offered guest blog posts by her authors and one really resonated with what I've gone through this past week.

I hope it blesses you too....

Three Reasons to Listen to the Enemy
By Lynn Hare

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
– James 4:7 (ESV)

Pay attention to the enemy of your soul. He’s got something you need.

Following a car accident in February, I was laid up with leg, back, neck, and facial injuries. By March, I was still in so much pain, I couldn’t even get comfortable in bed.I told my husband, “This morning I didn’t want to get out of bed.

The pain is winning.” My head dropped to my chest.

But I listened for Jesus’ voice. I heard Him whisper, “Those thoughts are not yours. The enemy is in your head.”

How do we wage war? By listening to the enemy. Here are three reasons:

1.) The enemy will show you where on the battlefield to fight.

When we hear, “I’m not making any progress,” we need to look for growth.

When I said, “I’m not getting better,” I frowned at the bald-faced lie. “Hey,” I said, “No wonder I’m under attack. I’m about to improve!” Determined, I rode my exercise bike and stretched my leg muscles. I was rewarded with a surge of energy. The next day, instead of two crutches, I was on one.

2. Like negatives from a camera, the enemy shows you the reverse of the truth.

Like photos developed in a dark room, black becomes white. Red turns green. Yellow is soon purple. When the enemy shows us an image, we need to declare its precise opposite.

I caught myself saying, “I feel lonely and isolated.” But then I glanced at the stack of get-well-soon cards and meals friends had dropped off. “NO!” I said aloud. “I have lots of friends!”

I determined to write two letters of encouragement each night.

3.) The enemy unwittingly drops hints that point to our future.

When I looked in the mirror, I thought, “Look at the swelling over my eye. What a loser!”

But instead, I looked ahead to what God was shaping me to become. I said aloud, “I’m a winner!” I doubled my words of encouragement to others. Several told me they were uplifted and strengthened.
And now the enemy was no longer in my head. I grinned, leaned forward and asked, “What else have you got?” He scowled and backed away. “Forget it.”

What lies from the enemy are pointing you to the Truth?

Tuesday Treasure - What Every Woman Should Know

Good Morning and Welcome to another edition of Tuesday Treasure!

Today we have a very special guest, Author Jori Sams with her book What Every Woman Should Know.

First a little about the author in her own words.....

I have spent a good portion of my life writing. Writing anything. It began with poems, then short stories, novellas, film scripts, novels, Bible studies, children’s stories. Somewhere in the mix, add singer-songwriter. And, of course, the many years of freelance journalism. Most recently, I have written over 1000 pieces for Yahoo alone.

Just give me a topic and I will string some words together as eloquently as possible.

I can now add author of non-fiction to the list. I did not ever think I could tackle all my thoughts and piece them together in a logical sense in this genre. But when God guides, He provides…

So the journey began. My discoveries were astounding. I spent much time in prayer and meditation as I wrote this book, taking it slowly, one epiphany at a time. My prayer is that it is liberating for every woman.

Here is Jori's explanation of how the book came into being.....

I went on a journey to try and unfold the mess that was in my head regarding equality. Not equality in the Western, or any other, Worldview, but that from the eyes of God. What was He thinking when He made man and woman? Are we equal? Were we ever? Will we ever be again? Is the institutionalized church practicing equality in a biblical context?

In my research, while answering one question, another question was born. The trail of answers led me back to the beginning. I wish I had known all of this when I first began walking with the Lord. What a liberating experience it has been! I pray you will be set free, too.

The book covers the subject in the range of women's issues on equality, a hot topic presently!

Take an intense, biblical journey and unpack some of the most controversial passages in the Bible while gaining fresh insight and perspective.

What Every Woman Should Know  is available now through the Publisher, Amazon, and Itunes!

What Every Woman Should Know will be on tour in April.
Check out the schedule
Participate and win!

As another way for you to participate in the tour, Jori has also created a Reader Poll/Survey centered around the book's subject matter. Check it out!

Well friends I hope you enjoyed this Tuesday Treasure - check back often for more interesting tidbits and great authors with their books!

Saturday Spotlight - Sharon Srock

Good Morning!

Can you believe today is the first Saturday in April already!?  Yeah, I know, me neither LOL!

Today's guest is Sharon Srock & Callie (book 1 in her Women of Valley View series)

Sharon Srock lives with her husband, Larry, and two dogs in Rural Oklahoma. She is a mother, grandmother, and Sunday School teacher. Sharon has one and three-quarters jobs and writes in her spare time. Her favorite hobby is traveling with her grandchildren. She is a member of the ACFW and currently serves as treasurer for her local chapter. Sharon’s debut novel, The Women of Valley View: Callie released in October 2012. The second in the series, The Women of Valley View: Terri releases in April 2013.

Three dire circumstances. Three desperate prayers. One miracle to save them all.

Callie Stillman is drawn to the evasive girl who’s befriended her granddaughter, but the last time Callie tried to help a child, her efforts backfired. Memories of the tiny coffin still haunt her.
Samantha and Iris Evans should be worried about homework, not whether they can pool enough cash to survive another week of caring for an infant while evading the authorities.

Steve Evans wants a second chance at fatherhood, but his children are missing.  And no one seems to want to help the former addict who deserted his family.

For Steve to regain the relationship he abandoned, for his girls to receive the care they deserve, Callie must surrender her fear and rely on God to work the miracle they all need.

Excerpt:

Callie Stillman dabbed raindrops from her face with a linen napkin as Benton dodged a server with a loaded tray and took his place across from her. She smiled into her husband’s blue eyes and reached across to wipe water from his beard. We’ll both have pneumonia if we don’t dry off soon.

Benton took the napkin and finished the job. I’ve been told the food is very good. A few sniffles should be worth it.

Callie’s gaze roamed the room. It’s…” Recognition slammed into her chest, forcing the air from her lungs. The man crossing the room behind her husband nodded and continued to his table. Was that the bailiff? Do you swear to tell the truth… She gulped for breath and fought the familiar darkness that crowded the edges of her vision.

Callie ran a finger around her collar, tugging the neck of the blouse away from skin suddenly dewed with a fine film of sweat. Too hot. She took a sip of water, dismayed at the tremor in her hand as she lifted the glass to her lips. Not here, not tonight. Callie closed her eyes and practiced the breathing techniques she’d learned over the last six months. In through her nose, hold for a few seconds, and out through her mouth. Concentrate only on the current step in the process, the next breath. The tightness in her chest began to fade away. Thank you, Jesus. She raised her water again and held the cold glass to her flushed cheek.

Callie can be purchased directly from the publisher, Harbour Light Books/Pelican Book Group, at Amazon or Barnes&Noble!
